    1. [KYJP-L] Questions & Answers
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - About every five or six months, I try to devote a posting to responding, for everyone's benefit, to some of the various questions that come to me by private e-mail about the List and its operation and function. It has been longer than 6 months since I last did this, and so, tonight, I am taking a short break from data postings to respond to those questions which I receive most often. What I am giving below is not all of the various types of questions I get, but are those that I receive most often. In a few cases, in which I may refer to a specific posting by someone else, no names or addresses are shown, and the individual in question is no longer a subscriber. We'll return tomorrow to our regular data posts. -B ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Q. How long has this List been in operation? A. Two years in November Q. Why did you start it? A. Two reasons: 1)The Jackson Purchase region of KY has been somewhat overlooked over the years by historians and genealogists and, 2) it is my way, in small measure, of repaying the debt I owe to the genealogical community which has been so helpful to me over the 35+ years that I have doing research. Q. How many people subscribe to the JP List? A. As of today, 562 Q. How many e-mail messages do you get in a week? A. On average, between 600-700, of which I will need to respond to about 300 of them Q. From what do you draw all of these data posts? A. Most of it is from items that I have accumulated over the years, including nearly 200 published works and 350+ microfilm reels relating to the JP. Much of it is material that I transcribed from film over the past 25 years. Q. What is the funniest message you ever received from someone on the JP List? A. There have been several, but I think the most amusing was a message I received from a subscriber who had received a dataset from me, and, as I always do, I had noted(it was a marriage record)that there was the "Consent of father - not named". I had inadvertently run the two words "not named" together, resulting in "notnamed". The subscriber wrote to ask if I had any material on the Notnamed surname in the JP. Q. What causes problems for you as the List host? A. I have few problems, due to the character and intelligence of the subscribership of the JP List. There are rare occasions when we have an "incident" arise, but those are handled as quickly and diplomatically as possible. If there is a violation of the List guidelines, as outlined in the Welcome Message, the violator faces suspension or removal from the List permanently, depending on the scope and nature of the violation. Q. What is your direct involvement with the JP? A. All of my paternal lineage springs from the JP. My father was born in Murray, in Calloway County, and, when I retire early in a few years, my wife and I will be relocating from where we are today in TX to 100 acres of land which we own in NE Calloway County. Q. The Welcome Message says you are a "Certified Genealogical Records Specialist". What does that mean? A. It means that I have been certified as a Genealogical Records Specialist by the Board for Certification of Genealogists in Washington, D.C., which is the national certifying authority. In my case, some 18 months of work were necessary to gain certification. The BCG insists on professionalism and continuing education in the field of genealogy, as they have done since 1964. Q. How long have you been doing genealogical research? A. Nearly 36 years Q. How old are you? A. 52 Q. What do you do in the "real world"? A. I am a labor negotiator, mediator and administrator. Q. How many hours a week do you spend working on the JP List? A. It varies, but on average, about 14-20 Q. Are you ever planning to stop hosting the JP List? A. No plans to stop at this time, although I made a pledge to myself that if things ever reached the point that it was not fun any longer, I would discontinue hosting it. So far, I'm still having fun. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

    1. [KYJP-L] Graves County - 1840 Census - Heads of Households - Part 5
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - As we resume data posts this week, we are going to return to our review of the 1840 census of Graves County. As a reminder, until the 1850 census, the populations schedules of the federal census included only the name of the head of household, with the others residing in the household shown as a number of people in various age brackets. If you see a name of interest, and you would like the complete enumeration, please let me know and I will get that information off to you. As always, your help in not resending this entire message back to me with your request is greatly appreciated. -B +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Graves County - 1840 Census - Heads of Households - Part 5 Dunnin, Erwin New, Pleasant Jones, Narcissa B. 3. Hi, Phyllis, One recommendation if you have the opportunity to go to the area is the wealth of resources available at the Museum at the Columbus-Belmont Battlefield State Park. Some information is on public display, other information is in storage. A number of years ago there was a lady named Lucille Bryars Owings that researched this area during that period and kept numerous scrapbooks which were once available at the museum. I don't know if her materials are still available or perhaps she donated them to the Hickman Co. Historical Scoiety. Do other JP researchers know? 1. [KYJP-L] Skills Puzzler # 30 - More Census Interpretation - Solution
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - I want to stop by and give you the solution to the latest Skills Puzzler. There were 27 folks who sent their thoughts to me about this Puzzler, which is a fairly good response for one of these items. You will recall that our goal was to find what had happened to the family of John Boatswanger, as he appears with his family in the 1850 census, but in 1860, there are no Boatswangers at all in the same county, nor in any of the surrounding counties. Our specific task was to try to use the 1860 census alone to track this group down. Everyone who attempted this Puzzler was on the right track, as all believed that John Boatswanger had died in the decade between 1850 and 1860, and that the elder Boatswanger man, who may well have been John's father, had also died. Most who tried this Puzzler felt that the next step ought to be an effort to find Asa Jones in the 1860 census, since John's wife Penelope probably married Asa(if he was not a relative), or she might be living in Asa's household if he was, in fact, a relative. The latter possibility would seem to ruled out, since the 1860 census had no Boatswanger names anywhere in it. A number of people said that we should check the neighbors for clues. That approach comes very close to the mark. Probably the easiest - and perhaps the quickest - next step to be taken in this case(and this was the one used in the real situation) was to re-scan the 1860 census for this county in its entirety, in an effort to see if we could find a female of the approximate right age, with the given name Penelope. That given name, while not unheard of, is somewhat unusual, and would stand out easily in a census search. Upon checking that county's census again in its entirety, we found a Penelope, age 36, born KY, appearing as the wife of one Martin Scott. It appeared that Penelope had remarried. The next task was to see if that household had two children in it with the names George and Mary. We did find a George, age 16, and a Mary, age 14, in that household, both born KY. There were other children older and some younger. What had happened, when the census taker enumerated that household, is a fairly common error that is seen in census rolls all the way up to about 1910. The census taker had started listing the children of Martin Scott, whose surnames would have been Scott, and then, when he came to George and Mary, he simply went right along without showing that the surname changed for those two children, or it could be that whoever was giving the information to the census taker did not tell him that those two children's surname was Boatswanger. As a result, they would appear to be Scott children. George Boatswanger died in 1922 in the same county, leaving a will. As for Joseph Boatswanger and Asa Jones - Joseph's grave marker was discovered later in the research, showing that he had died in 1858. Asa Jones disappeared after the 1850 census and was probably, in fact, a farm laborer who worked for John Boatswanger, and either died himself, or moved on when John died. Penelope's maiden name, found much later, was Disponet, so we can reasonably assume that Asa was not her brother, unless he was a half or step brother. Knowing about the types of errors that census takers made as they went about their business can sometimes give us a bit of an edge when we have problems such as this. Also, recognizing the unusual nature of a given name can be an advantage as we try to find that person in another household. Finally, I am asked frequently if the surnames I use in these Puzzlers are the actual names that were involved in the original problem. The answer is "No" - these are other names, most of them real(even the odd ones), but not connected to the actual case. I used real given and surnames in one of the early Puzzlers I posted, and it was sent to another list which had people researching those very names, and I was flooded with inquiries and conjectures - it took a week to get out from under that stream of mail. So I learned a valuable lesson from that. -B ============================================================

    1. [KYJP-L] Miscellaneous Text Files - Graves County - Wingo Methodist Church Cemetery
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - I have spent several frustrating hours converting another of the files contained on the several hundred floppy disks that I have with miscellaneous genealogical files contained on them. Many of these were originally input years ago using the old Word Star word processing program, and converting them to usable files in today's world can sometimes be a real challenge. It certainly was in this case, but I do now have the task completed. I have converted the listing of burials in the Wingo Methodist Church Cemetery in Graves County, and it is now ready for distribution to those who may need a copy of it. There are about 145 known burials in this cemetery, with the earliest known birth year being 1788. Surnames to be found in this cemetery include: Rhodes, Crass, Dunn, Barnett, Freeman, Cheniae, Wright, Evans, Thomas, Walker, Brown, Tartt, Dodson, Richardson, Morgan, Charlton, Flint, Katzman, Austin, Frost, Brantley, Peterson, Stimpson, Bell, Gilliam, Blalock, Vaden, Potts, Guill, Winslow, Wilson, Gregory, Plumblee, Yates, Lewis, Myers, Hill, Beadles, Bowling, Covington, Anderson, Myatt, Ligon, and Wesson. If you need a copy of this file, let me know, and I will forward it to you. I will send it as either a *plain text* or *rich-text* (the rich text format is available due to the process I had to go through to convert it) attachment to an e-mail. If you do not specify a format, it will be sent in plain text. If you must have it as a straight e-mail message, please specify that fact. You will receive the complete file - regretfully, time constraints prevent me from being able to go into the file and extract individual surnames. I will be back tomorrow with the solution to the latest Skills Puzzler - we've had a good response on this one - 22 folks have attempted it thusfar. -B ============================================================
