    1. [KYJP-L] Tip # 41 - 18th & 19th Century Terminology - Legal Terms
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - We will close out this week's data posting with another in the Tips series. In the past we have looked at different segments of terminology in use the last two centuries. In this Tip, we will concentrate on legal terms that we see if old court documents and other situations connected with the law. Those shown below will be in the "A"'s. As a side note, your Planning Committee for the JP Homecoming 2000 event will have its first meeting next Wednesday evening via chat room, to begin the early planning for the festivities. Those of you in the special JP Homecoming mail out group will receive updates about what is occurring. As always, there will be no data posts per se over the weekend, although I may drop by with another miscellaneous file, if time permits. I will be travelling around this area all day tomorrow, doing cemetery cleanup and some other duties, so time may not permit anything in the way of data over this particular weekend. I'll see how it all goes and get something done if I can. I hope your weekend will be rewarding - and restful. -B ============================================================ 18th & 19th Century Terminology - Legal terms Beginning With the Letter "A" abase - to lower or bring down(sometimes seen in depositions) abate - end, cease, terminate abjure - disavow, disassociate or swear never to return abstract - a summary accola - a tenant farmer or an individual living near a well known landmark abuttal - a mark or boundary between two points abrogate - reduce, appeal, annul or abolish acknowledgement - a statement under oath made by an individual who swears that a signature on a document is his/hers, thereby validating the legality of the document ad hoc locum - at this place ad interim - in the meanwhile ad litem - literally, for the lawsuit - seen in situations in which someone is placed in an official position only for the term of a particular set of legal circumstances administration pendite lite: partial administration of an estate until a pending lawsuit challenging the will can be resolved. administration de bonis non(or dbn) - the continuation of the administration of an estate by a new administrator, due to the death of the prior administrator before the estate was settled. Often seen in 18th and 19th century estate settlements. administration cum testamento annexo - generally, the naming of an administrator for an estate in which a will is present, but no executor was named, or the executor refuses to perform the work, or has died. adminicle - evidence presented to in an explanatory or corroborative fashion. age of reason - the age when a child is believed to be able to act in a responsible manner. Often this is at age 10 or 12, but can be even earlier. age of discretion - the age at which a child can be considered mature enough to choose his own guardian or the person to whom he might be apprenticed - this is often at the age of 14. age of contractibility - an age limit set on marriage, below which a child cannot marry, whether there is parental consent or not, except in cases in which the female is pregnant. This is often age 13, but it varies. after kindred - remote relatives - sometimes seen in colonial wills ahl - ad hoc locum - which see agreage - to accuse or allege ~to be continued~ +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

    2. Hi- Bill's post reminded me of a clarification I need for an 1850 census notation. My progenitor is listed, under his vocation, as a mason. Would this be a literal stone-mason, shaping stones, or could it run into bricklaying? Thanks- C Trusty

    3. My friends - Over the past three of four days, there have been three attempts made by several folks to post very lengthy, off-topic items to the JP List. Fortunately, they were so lengthy that they exceeded the maximum allowable message that will be accepted by the RootsWeb server and they were re-routed to me. I have discussed these situations with the posters. But, I am stopping by for a moment this morning to remind all of us that, especially as our List grows, we must stay focused and on-topic. I have mentioned earlier that our mission is working with the 8 counties in the Kentucky Jackson Purchase area, and, occasionally, with the TN border counties and, rarely, with Stewart County, TN because of the crossover traffic back and forth betwen these counties and the JP counties. We do not get involved with other areas of KY, TN, or IL, except perhaps to mention them in a posting which has, as its main focus, inquiries about JP families. We do not explore such things as the Melungeons, the Indian tribes from other parts of KY and the nation(although we do work with the Choctaw, as they owned the JP prior to the US purchasing that region), and other such topics. These subject areas, as interesting as they are, have their own lists and there is usually a lively discussion going on at all times on those lists for these areas which are off-topic for us. As always, your help in this area is greatly appreciated. I'll be back later with a "Tips" posting. -B ============================================================

I believe the father's name to be James Wilson Johnson as was his son's name. I believe this family should be listed in KY at least from 1830 to 1860... I have gone county by county trying to locate them but there is no consistency between census in the various counties so very hard to compare.. 1880 and 1860 and 1840.... Can any one help me or tell me what I might do to find this family? I do not see a way to continue my research until I know what county they came from? I realize they may moved around. Also I have not been able to find a marriage for James and Sarah. This family appeared on the 1870 census in AR. they are my gggp and great grand father. Thank you, Patricia Murrell Mata Pocahontas, AR

    1. [KYJP-L] Early Fulton County Marriages - Part 5
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - Today, we will resume our review of early Fulton County marriages. In prior segments of this series, we had worked our way up through the year 1850. In this post, we will look at the year 1851. If you see a marriage for your family, and would like the full dataset for that record(which, unfortunately, consists usually only of the date of marriage, although there is the occasional license date or consent), please let me know and I will forward that material to you. As always your help in not resending this entire message back to me with your request is appreciated. I will be out of town all day tomorrow, but I hope to be back early enough to respond to all requests, as well as posting additional data. A week from tomorrow, I will be leaving for the JP - I had not been able to make my regularly scheduled visits to the area this year due to my wife's problem with that pesky gall bladder. Now that all of that is behind us, I hope to resume my regular visit routine again. -B +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Early Fulton County Marriages - Part 5 Bard, Taylor Reed, Mary Jane Bloyce, Daniel Cole, Mary Baldridge, Wm Clayton, Alpha Fletcher, John Luten, Elizabeth Ann Gambil, John Smellings, Lerah Crawford, Wm B. 2. David L. Ray
    3. My grandfather Robert Luther RAY was born 12-12-1876, I don't know the location but suspect it was Hickman County Ky. His brother, Columbus Worth Ray was born there Aug. 2, 1880. Robert is shown in the 1910 Census in Graves County Ky. with his wife Jennie Lou SUGGS and 3 children, Otis Luther, John D., and Lottie and in the 1920 census in Calloway County,Ky. with his wife Jennie and 4 children. I have a lot of info on the children; Otis Luther, John D., Lottie Imogene, and Alvis David (my father). Would like to find information on Robert's parents, John RAY and Ellen Jane ARNOLD, I have a little on Ellen. I know she died in 1882, buried in Columbus Ky. Cemetery. I suspect John married again and had more children, one of whom might be Allene Ray. John and Ellen's children were William Alvis, Robert Luther, Columbus Worth, and Mary Louvina Ray. Also seeking Jennie's ancestors, Suggs. I have a good bit on her Ford and Jetton line, thanks to the kindness of people on this list and others. Her parents were John Hartford Sugg and Louisa Ann Ford. Jennie was born in Sedalia, Graves County, West Ky. I have a Family Tree Maker page at http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/r/a/y/David--L-Ray/index.html and a searchable page at http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/9610/search/index.html Last updated Sep 29, 1999.
