Dear Fellow Jackson Purchase Researchers, This is 'part 3' of the "Class of 1946" reunion list- found among my mothers papers. The list is not dated and it does not indicate which reunion. However I discovered that both my siblings and I used the back of it to write some notes. So...useing the scribbles as a guide, I estimate the list to be generated for a 1966 20 year reunion. The third set of surnames are: FULTON, MILLER, GIBSON, GISH, GORDON, FITZGERALD GUIER, GIPE, HARRELL, GIVEN, HARRIS, ERWIN The value as I see the list is in locating siblings of ancestors, especially the female line, because it lists the full maiden name, the married name, and the "present" address. There are 80 persons listed. Of the names, thirty six persons were living outside Kentucky, and four were listed as deceased. The surnames listed in the post may be the students original surname, or if female, a married surname. If you see a surname that interests you, please e-mail me personally and I will provide you both original surname, and when applicable, the married name. (In the interest of privacy for those listed, I will not provide the address.) On the cemetery locater map I have there is a Jones Cemetery located in NorthWest Calloway County just about a half mile west of Hwy 299 and about the same distance from the Marshall County border. Hwy 299 is a straight north-south road that goes thru Stella and Kirksey and continues into Marshall County. Maupin lists two Jones Cemeteries. They are not distinguished from each other in any way and Maupin does not describe where they are. They could be adjacent to each other. Nowhere does Maupin explain her method of recording, but it appears that she combined lists obtained from both tombstones and cemetery office records, and sometimes they overlap. These names look like they might be your family. Here is the complete listing for both cemeteries: Maupin, Judith Ann Cemeteries of Calloway County (Murray Kentucky: Kentucky Historical Society, June 1981) page 150 JONES CEMETERY Fulton, William, Nov. 8, 1822 -- Oct. 29, 1897 Jones, James C., Feb. 6, 1793 -- March 11, 1868 Jones, Burrell, died Oct. 24, 1889, age 80-9-26 Jones, Sallie L., wife, died Oct. 11, 1891, age 80-10-3 JONES CEMETERY Jones, David, about 1822, no stone Jones, Tabitha, no stone Jones, Charles and wife, no stones Jones, William, no stone Jones, Davy Jr., no stone Stewart, William, no stone A note about cemetery records in Kentucky: It is not uncommon for a person to be buried in one cemetery and an additional monument erected in another. My friends - As we resume data posts for this new week, we are returning to Marshall County to resume our review of early marriage records of that county. In prior posts in this series, we had worked our way to the year 1852, and we will resume with that year tonight. If you see a marriage in which you have an interest, and would like the full dataset for that record(which generally includes the date of marriage, who performed the ceremony, the surety, witnesses and consents, if necessary), please let me know and I will get that material off to you. As always, your help in not resending this entire message back to me with your request is greatly appreciated. Tomorrow, we will move back over to Graves County. -B ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Marshall County - Early Marriages - Part 10 Dejarnett, Joseph Norman Jones, Mary Louisa Starks, Jesse W. Dear Bill, Gee, you're not a mind reader, too? Sorry about the deletion of the county info. Let me try this again. Info from 1830 Calloway County 1830 Census-part 10 Wm. Brush Wm. Chambers Thanks for the land grant information. Sincerely, Malinda Hawthorne
Amelia, the FULTON LEADER normally does not answer requests such as yours. Their policy is to pass off requests to the Fulton County Genealogical Society , P. O. Box 1031, Fulton, KY 42041.I suggest you write them instead of the paper and enclose a SASE or contact jmcat@apex.net. ----- Original Message -----
Dear Bill, Please send the JP Land Grant File --LG795 Also information from the 1830 census -part 10 Wm. Brush Wm. Chambers Thanks! Malinda Hawthorne
My friends - I am dropping by today to let you know that I now have another segment of the JP Land Grants series ready for distribution. This installment covers more of the surnames which begin with the letter "H". Specifically, the surnames in this group are: Haynes/Haines, Haydock, Hays/Hayes, Hayden, Hawthorn, Hawkins, Haws, Happy, Hazlewood, Hatchett, Handlin, Hanberry, Harp, Hartsfield, Harpole, and Haley. If you need a copy of this file, please let me know and I will forward it to you. Please request *File LG826* in your message. I will send it as a plain text attachment to an e-mail message, unless you specify that you must have it as a *straight* e-mail message(which tends to skew the columnar alignments). You will receive the complete file, as time constraints will not permit me to go into the file and extract data in individual surnames. As a reminder, and for the 8 new subscribers which we have welcomed to this List over the past two days, the web site which shows other land grants text files which are currently available is to be found here: www.rootsweb.com/~kygraves/JPGrants.htm -B ============================================================
I am researching Vaughan, Brand, Beadles, and Payne in Graves County during the 1800s. Sherry
Hi Everyone! Am looking for any/all information on Hugh ORR and William M ORR. I believe that Hugh ORR is the father of William M ORR (b 1811 in KY) and Alex B ORR (b 1809 in Caldwell Co), however, the following early census do not tell me enough to be certain, any suggestions? Thanks in advance...Nancy Orr-Erb 1850 Graves Co William ORR, wife Nancy, dau's Mary,Lucy,Frances, sons James, Jesse,Benjamin,John,Horace 1840 Graves Co William ORR, 1 female 20-30 (Nancy), 2 females 0-5 (Mary,Lucy) 1830 Caldwell Co William ORR 1840 Graves Co Hugh ORR, 1male 10-15, 1male 50-60,1female 20-30, 1female 60-70 1830 Hickman Co Hugh ORR 1850 Graves Co Alex B ORR,wife Caroline, daus MI,MM,ML and son ZT 1840 Graves Co Alexander B ORR I have an obit on Alex B ORR which indicates he was born in Princeton KY. Also found the will of an Alexander ORR in Caldwell Co dated 1817, referencing his sons William, Hugh, and Alexander. And just recently received from the United Methodist Archives in NJ the obit on my grandfather Benjamin Franklin ORR which I will share with you: from 1920 Minutes of the Louisville Annual Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South B.F. ORR. After a long and useful life, devoted to God and his fellowman, the Rev. Benjamin ORR, for forty-seven years a prominent figure in Kentucky Methodism, passed from this life on the morning of July 31, 1920. He sank peacefully to sleep surrounded by his children, who were deeply devoted to him. The following Sunday afternoon he was laid to rest in the beautiful cemetery at Paris, KY., where he had lived with his children, Dr. James A. Orr and Misses Olivia and Ruth Orr, since his superannuation in 1916, following a paralytic stroke during his fourth year as pastor at Bardstown. Brother ORR was a man of striking personality and appearance, a type of the true Kentucky gentleman. He was born in Graves County, Kentucky, August 5, 1848. His parents were William and Nancy ORR, and he was the ninth of eleven children. His education was that furnished by the schools of his community and was seriously hampered when the Civil War broke out and the county in which he lived was overrun by the armies of both the Union and the Confederacy. Throughout his life he was an industrious student and educated himself to a far greater degree than many of whose earlier opportunities had been more propitious than his. {6 paragraphs follow regarding his 4 marriages and church activity, will happily provide if there is further interest) Besides Dr ORR and Missed Olivia and Ruth, he is survived by two sons, Benjamin ORR, Jr., Paris and Eugene M. ORR, Louisville, and two daughters, Mrs. Edward E PERRY, Sonora, and Mrs. C.M. MCGHEE, Newport. written by S.J. THOMPSON
Amelia asked for the name and address of the Fulton, KY, newspaper. Here it is: The Fulton Leader 304 E State Line Fulton KY 42041 If you were to address a letter to something like "Fulton Newspaper, Fulton, KY", chances are it will be delivered to the local newspaper office. I work at the Murray post office, and if we received such a letter that is how we would handle it. Most, if not all, of the lager towns in the JP have only one local newspaper. Of course it does help to have the correct name and address. In all cases be sure to include your return address. Don dedwards@apex.net
Can anyone tell me if there is a map describing what sections (legal description) are include in the Jackson Purchase. I'm interested in Hickman county specifically. Thanks Bill Vinson namerican@att.net

My friends - My ISP has been having mail server problems today, so I am unsure as to when you will receive this, but I will get into the queue. We are going to close out this week's postings with a continuation of our review of legal terminology used in the 18th and 19th century. We hit on a few of the terms in the first posting, and we will do some more today. As usual, there will be no data posts per se over the weekend, but I hope to drop by with one or two items which may be of interest. -B ============================================================ 18th & 19th Century Legal Terminology (Cont.) de son tort - generally refers to someone who was not named as an executor, but does the work anyway - literally, "of his own twisting". degrees of descent - ownership of land and personal property which is determined by the relationship of the individual to the deceased devisee - one who is named in a will to inherit real property (land) devisor - an individual who gives real property to another by will distrain - the act of seizing something of value in place of rent or other claim dit(pronounced "deet") - often seen in French families as a way of indicating a soubrique or nickname - Samuel dit Sam Jones divorce a mensa et thoro - a legal separation from "bed and board", rather than a full and complete divorce. divorce a vinculo matramonii - a complete and total divorce domicile - indicates the place to which a person intends to return - a broader term than the word "residence". This can be important in cases in which a person dies in another state, away from his/her domicile, relative to where an estate settlement may occur domestic - a category of individuals sometimes used by census takers to denote a sister or other female relative who lived in a household and helped with the housework, although the term could also be used when there was no relationship dowager - a widow who has a dower from a deceased husband doxies - prostitutes - seen more often in colonial documents double-ribbed - a pregnant woman donatio mortis causa - a gift given in preparation for an approaching death eld father - grandfather DVM - a designation for a Minister of the Gospel - literally Verbu Dei Ministerum elected guardian - a guardian chosen by a child who is 14 years old or older, rather than one appointed by the court edom die - on the same day, in the same place entail - originally an English practice, which also occurred in the American colonies up to the 1780's, in which the entire estate was given to the eldest surviving male heir, and then to his eldest son and then to his eldest son, etc. Entails often would create situations where descendants would have to make deeds, perhaps 100 years later, to clear the title and such deeds can be a welath of family information. ~to be continued~ ============================================================
