    1. [KYJP-L] My Mystery Granpa
    2. Terry Smith
    3. Really stumped on this one. Great Granpa SAMUEL A. FIELDS (1845-1898), s/o M.F (Major) FIELDS. Was a Ballard Co resident most of his life. Fought in Civil War as a teen & according to family legend - as a Union soldier. I can find nothing in present family info.or any online Regimental rosters on Rootsweb listling him. Does anyone know the names of Union units formed in this part of the state? I'd like to go thru their roster lists one at a time until I find him. Thanks, Terry

    1. [KYJP-L] Skills Puzzler # 31 -The Disappearance of John J. English
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - We will close out the week with another in the Skills Puzzler series. Over the course of these little brain teasers, we have covered all sorts of different scenarios which involved situations in which the more enlightened use of some of the ordinary types of documentation, as well as the use of some less-than-ordinary records groups, have been the key to breaking through a difficult problem. But what do we do when someone just simply disappears from the records(or, at least, they seem to do so, as we cannot find a trace of them), yet we know that the individual did not die, as he/she suddenly appears again, often many years later, sometimes in the same locality, and sometimes far away from his/her original home. Then, the question becomes, "Where was this person over those missing years, and what was he/she doing?" Today's Puzzler is based upon some help which I gave to a woman some years ago who was trying to get into an hereditary society. I've changed the surnames, but the facts are exactly as presented to me. The scenario was this: in the 1850 census of the City of Boston, Massachusetts, there was one Francis A[lexander] English, age 34, with his wife, Belinda (whose maiden name was Aldridge), and children Miranda, age 10, Eliza, age 6 and John J., age 4. Birthplaces are not relevant to our study here. Between 1850 and 1860, this family relocated to the Jackson Purchase region, and, in the 1860 census, the family is, in fact, shown in a JP county, with everyone ten years older, and the addition of two more children, Robert B., age 4, and Silas, age 2. However, John J. is missing. There is nothing in any record, throughout the 1860's, that mentions John J. English, although John's father, Francis, died in 1867, and a guardian was appointed for the other children. John is not mentioned. In the 1870 census, we find Belinda as head of her own household, and we also find, in that household, John J. English, age 24, shown as a "Farmer". The other older female children have married and live nearby. The problem facing us is finding what happened to John J. English between 1850 and 1870, and where do we go to try to track it down. The 1860 census of both Boston and of the JP county to which this family had moved was thoroughly researched, and the young man was not shown in either. Other research was also done in the Boston area to determine if perhaps a guardian was named, for some reason, for John J. Nothing was found to support that hypothesis. The same was down in the JP - again, nothing was found. There was a "family story" that John was an unruly child, but nothing to indicate that a guardian was needed. If you would like to express your thoughts on this Puzzler, you can send them to the List or to me directly. I'll be back before the weekend is over with the solution. As is customary, there will be no data posts per se over the weekend, but i hope to drop by with a file or two if time permits. -B ============================================================

    1. [KYJP-L] Special Veterans' Day Post: Graves County: Civil War Pension Applications
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - Today, we honor those who fought, and died, to preserve the freedoms which we, and other nations for whom we have also fought, enjoy. I am making a special post today in remembrance of those who fought in the Civil War from Graves County, under the Confederate flag. Most of these pension applications were lost in the 1887 courthouse fire, but some survived and found their way to the KY Archives. Listed below are the names of some of the applicants from Graves County, whose applications are extant. If you see one which relates to your family, and you would like an abstract of the application's contents, let me know and I will get that out to you. I would ask that these requests be kept to no more than two applicants, given the lengthy nature of these documents. We should remember that a widow's pension app will contain more genealogically valuable material than will an application from a living veteran, but either is a good resource to have. We will do more of these Graves County Civil War pension applications in the future. As always, you help in not resending this entire message back to me with your request is greatly appreciated. We will finish out the week tomorrow with another in the Skills Puzzler series. -B ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Graves County - Civil War Pension Applications Davis, Samuel W. 3. My friends - Today, we are returning to our review of early Hickman County marriages. In past segments of this series, we have advanced to the year 1838. We will finish that year and move into 1839 in this installment. If you see a marriage on which you would like the complete dataset(which unfortunately usually contains only the marriage date, although the occasional witness or consent is present), please let me know and I will forward that information to you. As always, you assistance in not resending this entire message back to you with your request is much appreciated. 1. [KYJP-L] ORR/Trinity Cemetery
    2. nancy erb
    3. Hi Everyone! Thanks for all your wonderful help in response to my previous query. We are traveling to Mayfield, Graves County and wish to ask for some further help: 1. Could anyone provide directions to Trinity Cemetery? Also, is this a small or large cemetery? Is there an office that we should visit for a grave map, and if so what are their hours? Any other suggestions? 2. This is a little more difficult. I'm trying to determine the location of the William ORR homestead. He is listed in Graves Co in the 1840 census pg 122, 1850 census District2, 201-371, 1860 census Mayfield 042 and 1870 census Haynes 130. In a sketch of Dr Jesse ORR printed in 'The Biographical Review of Johnson, Massac, Pope, adn Hardin Counties, IL' William M Orr, after his marriage, bought some timber land...and erected a log cabin. At this time, though the country was very sparsely settled, yet he was not without company, the woods being full of deer, turkeys, wolves, wild cats and an occasional panther... In the August 31, 1887 issue of the Mayfield Monitor there is the following obituary: Mr. William Orr, one of the oldest citizens of the county died at his residence near Viola on the 21st at the age of 76. An interview with a descendant of William M Orr: My grandparents home was near West Viola by the old highway. We would ride the train to Viola and walk to their home. The house was built of logs.... Would anyone have a plat map to check the location of his home? and where it would be found today? and directions? Most Appreciatively, Nancy Orr-Erb

    3. I am a brand new lister to Fulton Co. I am looking for my HUDSON family who claim to have their roots mostly in nearby Obion Co., TN, but because I can't find my g-g-grandfather in Obion Co. Census information before 1860, I am hoping to find a connection in Fulton Co. My g-g-grandfather is Pleasant HUDSON. According to the death certificate of his oldest son, Pleasant HUDSON was born in 1813 in Henry Co., TN. I found him, his wife and children in the 1860 Obion Co., TN Census. Unfortunately, the enumerator used initials rather than full names. The children listed match my family records. Surprisingly there were additional daughters that no one ever mentioned. I have not been able to confirm the wife of Pleasant HUDSON. The Hudson Family Assoc. supplied information indicating that Plynia HUBBARD was his wife. The initial of the woman listed as his wife in the 1860 Obion Co. Census was "P" so perhaps the HFA information is correct. I have no idea who Pleasant's parents or siblings are. It seems strange that he would be the only member of his family in this area especially if he was born in Henry Co. TN. Here is the family with notes about sources of information. The children my family did not know about are #4, #6 and #8. Pleasant Hudson, b 1813 Henry Co, TN possibly married Plynia HUBBARD, b 1821 unknown location. They had 8 or 9 children depending on how one interprets the 1860 Obion Co. Census and information submitted to HFA by Member #500 (Eva Nell Turner Cheek). The children are: 1. John Benjamin HUDSON (b 18 Jan. 1916, Obion Co., TN; d 16 July 1916, Village of Crystal, Obion Co., TN) also known as "John the Blind Man" after Civil War injury. Married Mary L. CROCKETT (b 03 April 1844 TN; d 22 July 1901 Obion Co., TN) a daughter of John Potts CROCKETT and Phoebe EZELL. (Source 1860 Obion Co. Census; death certificate; family records; HFA) 2. Henry HUDSON (b1841 TN; killed April 1862 Shiloh, TN) unmarried. (Source: 1860 Obion Co. Census; family records; HFA) 3. Benjamin Waller HUDSON (b 30 Jan. 1844, Antioch, TN; d 20 May 1907 Taft, Butler Co., MO) married 1) Alice M. CALHOUN (b 24 May 1850 Troy, Obion Co., TN; d 29 Nov. 1883 Antioch, Obion Co., TN) a daughter of Samuel S. CALHOUN and his second wife Elizabeth DICKEY. Married 2) Sarah Penelope WRAY (b 10 May 1857 MO; d 23 Nov. 1893 Neelyville, Butler Co., MO) no information about Sarah's parents. Married 3) Nancy Jane MORROW (b 03 Oct. 1855 AK; d 01 Aug. 1904 Taft, Butler Co., MO) a daughter of Jessie MORROW and Vernetty BRANNUM. Married 4) Laura DODD after 1905; no information known about Laura. (Sources: 1860-1880 Obion Co. Census; Obion Co. marriage records; marriage license; family records; HFA) 4. E (Elizabeth) HUDSON (b 24 Oct. 1844, TN; d 14 Feb. 1924 Grand Saline, Van Zandt Co., TX) married John Marion ALEXANDER (b 1833 TN; d 1876 ?). (Sources: 1860 Obion Co. Census; Ava Nell Turner Cheek, HFA.) 5. Mary Ann HUDSON (29 Jan. 1847 Antioch, Obion Co., TN; d 28 June 1940 Cape Girardeau, Girardeau Co., MO) married John Martin ALEXANDER (b 26 April 1838 TN; d 12 Nov. 1917 Parma, New Madrid Co., MO) a son of John ALEXANDER and Rissina VENTUS. (Sources: 1860-1880 Obion Co. Census; family records, HFA) 6. M (Mollie) HUDSON (b 1849 TN; d unknown). (Sources: 1860 Obion Co. Census, HFA) 7. Tennessee Adaline HUDSON (b 18 Feb. 1851 Obion Co., TN; d 29 May 1939 Hornbeak, Obion Co., TN) married Joseph Salvonus HAYES (b 05 May 1849 Hornbeak, Obion Co., TN; d 25 March 1921 Hornbeak, Obion Co., TN) a son of Charles HAYES and Rebecca WALKER. (Sources: 1860-1870 Obion Co. Census; family records; HFA) 8. F (Fannie) HUDSON (b 1853 TN; d unknown). (Sources: 1860 Obion Co. Census, HFA) 9. Cora HUDSON (b 1857 Union City, Obion Co., TN; d 1939 Obion Co., TN) married Thomas Marion HAMPTON (b 1854 TN; d 1891 Obion Co., TN) a son of H. HAMPTON and Dilla ? (Sources: 1860, 1880 Obion Co. Census, family records; HFA) In the 1860 Obion Co. Census J.M. ALEXANDER, age 26, is part of the Pleasant HUDSON household and "E" (Elizabeth), age 16, is listed under his name indicating she was his wife? There are two ways of looking at this record. J.M. ALEXANDER may have been a son-in-law and Elizabeth HUDSON his wife; OR J.M. ALEXANDER may have been a farm hand and Elizabeth his wife, but no relation to my HUDSON family at all. I recently heard from a descendant of Elizabeth HUDSON Alexander. They claim she was an Indian. I don't believe my HUDSON family had Indian blood, but of course, I could be wrong. They also say they have some record that indicates Elizabeth had two brothers, Jim and John ALEXANDER giving rise to the possibility that she wasn't married to this J.M. ALEXANDER but was his younger sister and they both might have been working on the Hudson farm in 1860. What a tangle!! I very much appreciate your taking the time to read this information and look forward to hearing from anyone who has a connection.. Thanks, Lonna Jean

    1. [KYJP-L] Re:Published Consent List - Calloway County
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. There is no extant consents book for Calloway County. Only Marshall County has ome of these consent slips still existing. The marriage record of Liles/Agnew shows only "Consent of father" in the "Remarks for the Gentleman" column. It was fairly common practice for the clerk or deputy who recorded the issuance of the marriage license to write in only the phrase, "Consent of father/mother/guardian, etc.", when the parent or guardian came in with the child to given verbal consent. However, if the parent sent a consent slip with the child and did not accompany the couple to the courthouse to obtain the license, the clerk or deputy would often put this in the record: "Consent of father, John Jones". Clerks and deputies did not always follow these practices, and some did it more than others, but this general practice is why we often see nothing but "Consent of father/mother/guardian" with no names. -B ============================================================ At 08:15 PM 11/09/1999 -0800, you wrote: >Manassa Liles married Sally Agnew on June 2, 1830, in Calloway County.
