My friends - Today, we will continue with the short series on Calloway County Vital Statistics death records for 1878. We will finish this series with tomorrow's data posting. If you see a name in the list below which relates to your JP research, and would like the full set of data for that person(which generally includes the date of death, sex of the deceased, if not obvious, where born, age at death, names of parents and birthplaces of parents), please let me know and I will get that information out to you. As always, your help in not resending this entire message back to me with your request is greatly appreciated. I feel the need to take just a quick moment to remind all of us that the JP List is dedicated to the history and genealogy of the families of the 8 KY Jackson Purchase counties(Ballard, Carlisle, Calloway, Fulton, Graves, Hickman, Marshall and McCracken). We do not cover other western KY counties, such as Caldwell, Christian or Trigg, nor do we get overly involved, except in passing in mentioning a family who resided primarily in the KY JP region, with TN counties, such as Stewart, Henry, Weakley, Gibson and Obion counties. These counties and locales have their own lists. Because of the large amount of back and forth traffic between the border counties of the KY and TN JP regions, there is some overlap, and I do occasionally post data on the TN border counties, but it is a rarity. Finally, there has been a "flare-up" of discussion, on some other lists, in the past few days, about which computer genealogy program is the best, and which vendors give the best service, etc., and such discussions can become very heated. Those subjects are completely off-topic for the JP List, as are virus warnings and discussions about current political and religious issues. We'll finish the 1878 Calloway deaths tomorrow, as I said above, and end the week with either another in the "Tips" series, or perhaps another Skills Puzzler. -B +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Calloway County - Vital Statistics Records - Deaths - 1878 - Part 3 [Age shown after name] [M=Male F=Female] Manning, Mary D., 21 Austin, K.A., 13 (F) Marshall, Maud S., 2 mos Taber, S.E., 5 mos (M) Swift, Cora E., 9 Brewer, M.E., 3 (F) Jones, Gus A., 6 Adams, Kittie, 60 Peler, Wm R., 6 Erwin, Mary, 4 Stewart, Mary J., 36 Smotherman, E.J., 42 (F) Jones, Thomas R., 74 Atkins, Emily F., 25 Hutchens, Emma, 2 Fare, Jane, 23 Cain, Parilee, 32 Thornton, Polly, 70 Jackson, Rachel, 70 Whitnell, Robert, 81 Osborn, Ida B., 8 Fair, Julian, 11 Brandon, G.C., 10 (M) Lamb, Martin V., 47 Lamb, Jesse V., 16 Moore, Jane, 45 Ryan, Susie, 1 Wilson, Hattie M., 6 mos Moore, Susan M., 50 Craig, Victor E., 6 weeks Nichols, Wm, 15 Hensley, Joab, 83 Slaughter, B.H., 8 mos (M) ~to be continued~ +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Dear Fellow Jackson Purchase Researchers, This is the last post of the "Class of 1946" reunion list. (Estimated date of the document is 1966.) I finished the main part of the list in part 5. At the end of the list are 6 names which are preceeded by a title: LIST OF PEOPLE WHO RECEIVED A MASTER'S DEGREE -1946- FEWELL, Miss Eddie Gladys FISER, James Earnest (deceased) FITCH, Mr. Joseph Clay GARRETT, Mr. Carl SMITH, Eleanor Kinney(Mrs. Preston E Heath) HEATH (see above-SMITH) HOLLAND, Mr. Joel Preston "Ty" In this post I have provided the full name, and maiden names when applicable. No other name information is available. My previous posts resulted in about a 20 requests, and feedback that 2-3 were "matches". I have enjoyed sharing what I had to assist you in your research. Earlier today I posted the following note: If anyone is considering purchasing a product from Ancestry. com, if you'll email me privately I'll share my experiences with you before you spend the money. I received over 200 (and still climbing) responses. To re-hash briefly: my problem was not w/the database subscription service, but with a product (genealogy program) I had purchased and wanted to return. You need an authorization # to facilitate a return and you only have a set number of days to get credit on your mastercard. I had sent 11 emails (!) from Oct. 22 to Nov. 17 and not ONE was answered. Time was running out for a successful return/credit. I wanted to let you know the latest. This afternoon I was contacted by a rep from Ancestry.com. Interestingly, his call did not come from my emails or phone call, but from his being alerted through an internet sighting of my original posting. (Ahh, the power of the internet!) He was apologetic about (1) the fact I have sent 11 emails and received no response and (2) the fact that a phone call was also ignored. This employee stated he had been recently hired to improve customer relations and seems willing to give it a try. I give him an A+ for attitude and think he has the company's best interest at heart. We can give him a chance to turn it around. (The true test, in my case, will be when I see the credit show up on my mastercard. Then I'll be a believer.) Thank you all for sharing your experiences with me and I hope for those of you who have also had problems with the company, they will be resolved to your satisfaction as mine has been. Happy hunting, Glenna Kinard

Looking for a Spencer Waters, son of William J.H. Waters or H.J. and Caroline Westmoreland or Westmorland of Pope Co. Ill. . He is also brother to James Armstrong Waters of Glendale, Illinois, who married Mary Ida Frizzell. James and Ida are buried at Old Mt. Zion in Pope Co. near Johnson Co. line. He was alive in 1932 when James died. All I know is that he was in Ky.

My friends - I had planned to go back up to Marshall County this evening, but I have decided to continue with the 1878 Calloway County VS death records. This series can be finished in a total of 4 parts, so I am going to continue with it until it is finished later this week. My friends - Today, as we resume data posts, I am beginning a new Calloway County series. The State of KY made one of its unsuccessful attempts to get the counties to collect vital statistics records in the period 1874-1878, as it had in the 1852-1859 time frame. The same problems occurred in the later period as had happened in the earlier one. The county clerks detested the law, as it added to their burden, and they lobbied extensively to have the law repealed. As with the earlier VS law in the 1850's, they were successful, and this later one was also repealed. I have one set of death records for the year 1878 which I am going to bring you, broken into two or three segments. If you see a name of interest to you, and you would like to see the full dataset for that listing(which includes the date of death, the age of the deceased, the sex where it is not obvious, where the deceased was born, the names of the parents, and their birthplaces), please let me know and I will get that material off to you. As always, *please* do not resend this entire message back to me with your request. Doing so causes a waste of paper, as I print these requests so that I can jot down the notes I need to respond, and I do not need 3 sheets of paper to use for that purpose, which is what occurs if my original message is resent with the request, and I fail to notice that before I print the request. If you use the Reply to button on your mail program, just hit it and then go down in the body where my message is seen, highlight it, and press delete on your keyboard, and its gone. I do need the Subject line title of the post, however, especially if a request is made several days after the original post. Your help in this area is greatly appreciated. Tomorrow, we will return to Marshall County. -B +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Calloway County Vital Statistics Records - Deaths - 1878 - Part 1 (Age at death shown after name) Reed, Polly M., 70 Newsome, Lilly M., 7 days Cox, Rufus, 3 Hughes, Emma, 6 mos Crass, O.J., 5 (F) Edwards, ------ 2 days (M) Yandell, -------, 3 (M) Ragsdale, W.R., 38 (M) Yandell, S.L., 3 (M) [this is a duplicate of the Yandell death just above] Chapman, ------, 1 mo (M) Cavill, Thankful, 6 Edwards, ------, 3 hours (M) Fiser, Eunice, 4 Hargrove, ------, 3 weeks (M) Morton, Louisa, 25 Russell, ------, 5 weeks Miller, John, 1 Height, Elizabeth, 74 Ray, ------. 2 days (M) Stone, James A., 14 Miller, ------, 1 day (M) Curd, Early B[rent], 2 Newport, Elizabeth, 58 Wilson, Mattie S., 9 mos Bridges, Elizabeth, 25 Dunn, Ananias, 6 days Stubblefield, Jane, 78 Allbritten, Lorinda, 23 Henry, M.W., 61 (M) Tailor, Kittie, 53 Waters, Sallie, 33 ~to be continued~ +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Bill, Sorry to horn in on this request from Weeksbj@aol.com but I am researching CRASS in Kentucky as well and would love anything pertaining to them including the Calloway Co. Deaths. However, if this is a request for information from a list you haven't posted yet pardon me. I will wait for the posting. Not intending to jump the gun. In 1975 I decided it was time to start researching my family. I talked with all of the older members and was told: My gggrandfather was Joseph Spurlock Nunley. He was born in Nashville and was one half Cherokee. My gggrandmother was Laura Ellen Wilmoth. She was born, raised and married in Mayfield, Graves County, Kentucky. Her parents were killed by carpetbaggers and she was raised by an uncle, James Bradley. She had a sister named Anna who married Bill Tharp. My ggrandfather, John Riley Nunley, was born in Paducah, Kentucky in 1874. In 1880 they were at Clark's River, District #2, Paducah, McCracken Co., KY After tons of snail mail and no results, I stopped searching. Last year I got this computer and now have time to spend at the library so I decided to try again. I have found lots of info on other family members not much on Joseph and Laura. I have found the marriage record for Joseph and Laura in Belmont, Missouri, October 3, 1874. Joseph purchased land in Yell County, Arkansas in 1889. The 1900 census shows Joseph b. Dec, 1856 in TN, father born VA, mother born AL. Laura b. October 1858 in KY, father b. TN, mother b. TN. Children: John R., Callie J., Raymond R., Washinton H., Cina Belle, Ninetta, Ollie G., Uvie and Cynthia. I can't find any information before 1900 except for the marriage record. I can't find any evidence that they were ever at Clark's River, District #2. I have searched every record I can find. I even went to Paducah, Mayfield and the Kentucky Archives in Frankfort to see if I could find any records. Nothing!! Does anyone have any ideas what I do now? Thanks Beth
I'm still struggling with my g-grandmother Mary Retta (aka Rettie) NANNEY, any help would be appreciated. Here's is what we know about Mary Retta. Mary Retta was born in Jan 6, 1881 in Tennessee. Mary Retta was an orphan, claimed to have never known her father, and her mother died when she was about 4 years old. As an orphan, Mary Retta was raised "from pillar to post", apparently shuffled from one family to the next. She lived for a time with an "UNCLE JIM NANNEY". She also lived with the DICK BOGGAS family. I know nothing about the Boggas family. A relative says she lived in Troy for at least a time. Don't know if this is Troy, KY or Troy, TN. In 1898 Mary Retta Nanney married John David OUTLAND. Although the family lived in Calloway Co, Kentucky, Mary Retta and John David were married in Henry County Tennessee. Her death certificate indicates Mary Retta (NANNEY) OUTLAND died 5-10-1962, and is buried in Elm Grove Cemetery. The informant, a daughter did not know the names of Mary Retta's parents. Another dead end. The last little wrinkle, is when the census taker came around in 1900 to Calloway Co. John David OUTLAND's wife's name was alledgedly "Elizabeth". While I originally believed Elizabeth was his first wife and Mary Retta was the second (the ages suggested two diff women), this conflicts with the 1898 marriage record. Perhaps Retta is a nickname for Elizabeth, or the information was provided by a misinformed neighbor. My friends - I am dropping by on this Sunday evening to pass along the solution to the latest Skills Puzzler. We had only 12 brave souls who tried this one, and, of that group, only one nailed it solidly. Another subscriber had the solution in mind, but was unsure about it. You will recall that our task was to explain the whereabouts of John J. English, born in Boston, from the time of the 1850 census, until he reappears in his mother's household in the Jackson Purchase region in the 1870's. One of the keys, which many of those who sent their thoughts to me about this puzzler spotted, was the somewhat veiled reference in my narrative to the fact that John was, according to the family legend, an "unruly child". Several in the group felt that he may have been *so* unruly that he ended up in jail or in some type of juvenile court proceeding. It was suggested that prison records in both KY and MA be checked for this possibility. The researcher whose line this was had, in fact, gone that route, with no results. These types of records were much better in MA than in KY in the 1850's, but nothing was found. Tenured subscribers to this List may recall my mentioning, on several occasions, the need to try to place ourselves in the environment of our progenitor when we are trying to determine what action the ancestor may have taken when confronted with a situation requiring a decision. In this case, Francis English, father of John J., was shown as a teamster in the 1850 census, and as a farmer in the 1860 census in KY. Given the fact that Boston was a major seaport in this time frame, it is possible that Francis' work took him into the dock area(a teamster, by the way, was an individual who hired out his team of horses and his rig - in the northeastern part of the US, in a seaport, such men often hauled goods from ships). If we put any stock in the old family story about "unruly" John J., it would be worthwhile to see if perhaps his father sent him to sea. It was not unusual for boys as young as age 10 to be sent to sea. Doing so was considered one way to bring discipline to a child. We checked a number of ships' lists for Boston in this time period, and found nothing. We had checked, however, only ships sailing under the American flag. Looking at other lists, for foreign ships, however, did not produce any results. We turned to the newspaper archives for the area. It was common practice for newspapers to publish lists of ships crews and passengers, both arriving and departing. In 1852, we found a listing for the British bark Glasson. Among the crew was John J. English, who was shown as an apprentice seaman. That designation is unusual, since young boys were usually given the work of a "cabin boy". Later, it was found that John J. served in the Civil War in the regular Navy, and was discharged in 1867, about the time that his father died. He then appears in the 1870 census in the JP, in his mother's household. So, we have a very good idea of what John J. was doing during all of those years that he was away. When we place ourselves into the environment in which our forbears lived daily, it gives us a "leg up" when we start pondering mysteries such as the one discussed here. -B +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

My friends - I am dropping by to let you know that I have another segment ready in the Jackson Purchase Land Grants series. This segment deals with more surnames which begin with the letter "S" - specifically, San(d)ford, Sams, Sames, Salyer, Sanders, Satterfield, Shaw, Sample, Stafford, Skaggs, Straw, Straub, Swain/Swayne, Scarborough, Saunders, Smally and Scarce. If you need a copy of this file, please let me know by requesting *File LG867*. I will send it to you as a plain text attachment to an e-mail message unless you request that it be sent by "straight e-mail" (which often tends to skew the columnar alignments). You will receive the complete file. Time constraints do not allow me to go into these files and extract the data on individual surnames contained within them. As a reminder the JP Land Grants web site is located here: http://www.rootsweb.com/~kygraves/JPGrants.htm For those on the JP List, I'll be back tomorrow with the Skills Puzzler solution. -B ============================================================
