    1. [KYJP-L] Singleton
    2. Baldwins
    3. At one time, I found a listing for a Jesse Singleton in Graves County. I am wondering if anyone has any records of him to see if he is the gentleman I am looking for. My Jesse Singleton was born in 1875 and by 1900 had moved to Missouri. I do not know anything about his parents except that they also were born somewhere in KY. Any help or insights would be greatly appreciated. Amanda

    1. [KYJP-L] New JP Land Grants File Now Available - "W" Surnames (Part) - File LG884
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - I am dropping by today to let you know that I have another segment in our review of the JP land grants ready for distribution. This file covers more of the "W" surnames - specifically: Watkins, Walston, Watson, Wall, Warden, Wray, Waford/Wafford, Wasson, Walton, Waggoner, Warren, Waterfield, Walthall, Waller, Watts, Wells, and West. Subscribers to the mail lists which I host can obtain a copy of this file by requesting it from me by private e-mail and asking for *File LG884*. I will send it as a plain text attachment to an e-mail message unless you specify that you need it as a *straight e-mail message*(which often tends to badly skew the columnar alignments). Time constraints do not allow me to go into the file and extract data for individual surnames, so you will receive the complete file. We are now more than halfway through the 9000+ land grants which were made in the Jackson Purchase region. For those on the JP List, I will return tomorrow with the latest Skills Puzzler solution. -B ============================================================

    1. [KYJP-L] HUDSON
    2. Lonna Jean Conroy
    3. Hello Lynn, I am writing in reference to the following message you posted to the KYJP List 10 Dec. 1999 (V99 #460). I am interested in your HUDSON connection. I believe my HUDSON family was across the state line in Obion Co., TN from about 1839 on. I have not found verification of when my g-g-grandfather, Pleasant HUDSON arrived in Obion Co., but according to birth records for his children he was probably there by around 1839. He purchased land in 1849 (Tennessee Land Grant). There is quite a bit of controversy about where he was born. His oldest son's death certificates states Pleas HUDSON born Henry Co. TN, mother unknown; his daughter's death certificate states Henry HUDSON born England, mother Paulina HUBBARD born TN. The 1860 Obion Co. TN Census indicates that Pleas HUDSON was born 1813 and Paulina in 1821. Hudson Family Association records say Pleasant HUTSON/HUDSON was born 1820 Virginia and Plynia HUBBARD no information (based on records submitted by a woman claiming descendancy from Pleasant and Plynia's daughter Elizabeth). I have ordered death certificates for all the remaining children hoping to find corroborating evidence. As you can see, I have not been able to nail down exactly where and when Pleasant or Paulina were born; don't know who their parents are or who their siblings may have been. I have a gut feeling (very unsubstantiated!) that my HUDSON line may have been in the Jackson Purchase area; therefore, I would like to visit with you about your HUDSON line. I have a lot of information about Pleasant Hudson's children. Thanks and I look forward to hearing from you. 1. [KYJP-L] Skills Puzzler # 33 - Record Analysis
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - As we wind down toward the end of this week, I'll throw out another Skills Puzzler for you this evening. Before doing that, however, and just as an aside, I'll pass on to you that the Yellow Fever File turned out to be the most requested item in JP List history - 149 requests, and a few are still coming in. I had expected this one to be popular, but it exceeded my expectations considerably. In the past, we have devoted a few of these Puzzlers to record analysis - trying to determine which - if any - records were available, what priority and credibility should we assign to them, and what deductions can be drawn from that. This Puzzler addresses this same subject. The scenario is as follows: about 17 years ago, I was asked for some help from a young lady who was trying to get into the DAR on her paternal lineage, which traced back to a Revolutionary soldier. She had all of the proofs she needed, except one. Her problem was with her great-grandfather, Josephus Snurd(names changed to protect the guilty<g>). This man was born in 1849, served in the Civil War in 1864-65, and married, in 1871, Penelope Poltice, by whom he had 5 children, namely James, Jackson, Mary, Edward, and Lucretia. His first wife died in 1889, and he remarried, in 1890, to Sarah Scrimshaw, by whom he had 3 other children, Mariah, born in 1892, Franklin, born 1894, and an infant, born shortly after Josephus' death, but which did not survive beyond three month of age. The problem arose from the amazing number of different dates which the researcher was uncovering for the death of Josephus Snurd. It seemed almost too easy, in the beginning, because the researcher's grandmother(Mariah), had told her several times that she well remembered the day her father(Josephus) died. As the grandmother put it, "It was on my fifth birthday, and Mama was going to bake a cake for me, but because Papa died that day, I did not get my cake". Seems straight forward enough. This would have pegged the death date of Josephus as 30 March 1897. However, while checking the estate settlement, a document from the widow was found, dated July of *1898*, in which she stated that her husband had "...recently died...". Beyond that, a search of newspaper files did not turn up an obituary, but there was a short piece in a column by the newspaper editor, dated 20 September 1897, in which he mentioned his "...good friend, Josephus Snurd...", who was obviously still living at that time. There were no vital statistics records in this time frame that might have assisted. At this point, the researcher turned to the possibility of their being an application for a widow's pension, since Josephus had served in the Civil War. Sure enough, one was found, dated 1931. The date of death for Josephus was given as 30 March 1896(!). So there were, at this point, all these different years of death for Josephus. The researcher turned to burial records at the church. A record for Josephus was found, but indicated that the burial occurred 4 April 189- (the last digit was blank). Josephus headstone was not readable in the area in which the death year was carved. This apparent group of contradictory years caused her lineage society application to be sent back for further clarification. We did determine, however, the correct year of Josephus Snurd's death. The clue is in the narrative above. Our quest here is to find the clue and indicate how we should proceed to determine what year of death is actually correct, working only with what is presented above. If you would like to opine on this one, you can send your thoughts to the List or to me privately. I'll be back sometime over the weekend with the solution. As is customary, there will be no data posts per se over the weekend. But I hope to drop by with another file offering if time permits. -B ============================================================

    3. Hello, Does anyone know if there were pre-1900 directories in the JP region? I'm looking for the years after the 1881-1897. My orphaned g-grandmother Mary Retta NANNEY was born in 1881, too late for the 1880 census, and married before the 1900 census. Also, are there any school records for the same time period? Any help or suggestions greatly appreciated. Merilee

    1. [KYJP-L] County formations
    2. Ardilla N Johnson
    3. In 1821 the entire Jackson Purchase area was Hickman Co, in 1822 Calloway Co was formed to include the area now known as Marshall Co. In 1823, Graves Co was formed as it is today, in 1824, McCracken Co was formed to include the northern part of what is now Ballard Co. In 1825, Marshall Co was formed from the northern part of Calloway Co and in 1842 Ballard Co was formed to include what is now Carlisle Co. In 1845 Fulton Co was formed and in 1886 Carlisle Co was formed. All county borders are the same today as they were in 1886. Hope this helps. Nadene

    1. [KYJP-L] School Records
    2. When I was at the new KY history center, there was a section of school records for some counties. (Frankfort, KY) There were none that I could find about Calloway Co. for the years I was interested. I have no idea about the other counties. I do not remember what years it covered. The info they have is on microfilm. I would be interested in what others have found. My Dad went to dear old Utterback, out side of Murray. (Yes, it's named after Bill's kin.) I have four generations of McKEEL, WATERS, THORNTON, and BOAZ, buried in Murray City Cem., Curd-Mckeel Cem., Old Salem and others in Calloway Co. On my Mom's side from Almo, Calloway Co., I have generations of TAYLORS buried in Almo Cem. and Temple Hill Cem. Also McCORMICK in Puryear and Buchanan, Henry Co. TN just over the border. Ann McKeel
