I am searching David Shelton of Calloway Co.,Ky who died in 1845. He was married to Martha Jenkins of Rowan Co.,NC. I only found deed records to 1840 in the Dallas Library. Don't get to the library but about once a year. Need any deed records of when Martha may have sold her half of David's estate. She is not on the census in Calloway for 1850 that I found. Would like to know if and when she sold the land or if she died with out a will. David did not name any of his children except my line which is CB Cuthbert Shelton. He had many other children living in Calloway. Any and all help is appreciated. Hope to find new cousins. annd in TX
Bill, could you send me the file on Rayburn Wyatt and Susannah Chandler? Thanks so much for your efforts. Nadene Johnson
My friends - As we move into Christmas week, we are resuming our review of early Calloway County marriages in today's posting. In prior segments of this series, we have worked our way from 1823 to 1841, and we will continue with that year in this post. Subscribers to this List who see a marriage which is of interest to them can request the complete dataset(which usually contains the dates of license and marriage, the consents, and who performed the ceremony)by sending a message to me with the names of the couple on whom the dataset is needed, and I will forward that on to you. As always, your help in not resending this entire message back to me with your request is appreciated. We will have an abbreviated data posting schedule this week. There will be no post on Wednesday, as that is my teaching night over on AOL. The final post for the week will be on Thursday and will be another in our continuing series on terminology. There will be no data posts on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day, nor on the Sunday following Christmas(and we do not have data posts on Saturday or Sunday in any event). I may drop by if I have a file ready to offer, if time permits me to get one prepared. -B +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Early Calloway County Marriages - Part 35 Roberts, Samuel Taylor, Sarah Hanes, Alexander Wallis, Sarah Jones, James Dotson, Mahala Hefner, Abraham Ford, Phebe N. Does any one on the list have the phone # and fax # for the Calloway County Clerk's office. Would appreciate the info. Thanks annd in TX
I would like driving directions, from the North, to two Graves Co., Cemeteries . I had them some time ago, but my health declined, and lost them somewhere in files. 1. Rozzell Cem. 2. Macedonia Cem. I think they are within the Pryorsburgh vicinity, or Twsp. range, as that is where most of the families lived. Thanks, Mamie Tate mailto:mamie.tate@worldnet.att.net
Hello, Can some one tell me names of cemetery's in the Clear Springs , Graves County, KY area - have grt grt grandfather buried somewhere in that area - listed as death 3-31-1876 William C. Dunaway.. Thanks Patrick Duffy ><> EZDUFFTT@aol.com ^^ Colorado ^^
Once again, please let me know if anyone knows who runs or where the River Museum ended up. Genealogical information on my family was given to them in Paducah, which I now need to research the family of James E. Wilkerson, a riverboat pilot. Please let me know if you have any idea how to contact them. K
Would please like a copy of Martin Cem. Thanks, Doris

My friends - There are a few administrative items that I need to bring to your attention at this time. I apologize for what may be a long message, but these items need our attention. First, there has been a lot of discussion around the 'Net over the past few days about the new form of worm which is being sent around. You should be aware that this worm may come "disguised" with headers that make it appear that it is coming to you from a mail list, such as the JP or some other one. It may also come with a "forged" return address, which may appear to be someone you know who is on a mail list. Once the system is infected, the worm goes about its business of attaching itself to all outgoing messages, without the sender knowing that he/she has an infected machine. RootsWeb is researching this problem, but it is difficult to contend with it at their end, because most of the traffic which has the infection does not go through their system, and thus any filter they put up will not catch the worm. So what do we do? These worms need MS Outlook and/or Explorer to propagate, so those of you who do not use either of these programs should be safe in any event. But, the way to be *absolutely* safe is to *NEVER* open any attachment to an e-mail which you may receive which has an .exe extension on it, such as bboy.exe, goal1.exe, new.exe, etc. I will not open any attachment with an .exe file extension, even if i know the person who sent it. We do not deal, in genealogy, with attachments that come to us with .exe extensions - we work with .txt, .rtf, doc and perhaps one or two other textual extensions - on the JP List, we work with plain text(i.e., files with .txt on the end, such as CubaCemeteryGraves.txt) almost exclusively. These types of files are not "executable" files, and do not carry viruses or worms. But even so, if I receive an uninvited attachment of any sort, whether .exe or .txt, or any other type - I will not open it - it gets a swift kick to the trash bin. Most folks will advise you in advance if they are going to send an attachment, and you can then be prepared to receive it, and know what it is. So, I suggest that we all avoid opening any unsolicited attachment that comes to us, and that we *never* open one with an .exe file extension. This will be the last message I will be sending about this current worm infestation, unless something else develops, and there should be no discussion on the List about it, as per our guidelines. If you have a concern, let me know privately and I will investigate it. One of our subscribers has advised me that Ancestry.com is having one of their "free" database periods for the next few days, so if you are interested in taking a look, they are at www.ancestry.com Another one of our subscribers, who is new to the List, has passed along the URL for an interesting site that describes one man's effort to preserve grave markers. While this is not in the JP region, and is somewhat off-topic for us, I am going to include it here. It is Christmas, and we rejoice in the good things that folks are doing: http://starnews.com/extra/features/99/dec/1207st_cemetery.html Secondly, I want to bring you up to date on the situation I mentioned earlier concerning requests come to me for data from people who were not on one of the 4 lists which I host, with the JP List being the flagship for the others. It appears that it is a manifestation of the PML offering which RootsWeb has put into effect recently. People are seeing these surnames through their PML mailings from RootsWeb, which contain copies of messages, from any of the 16,000 mail lists which RootsWeb hosts, that contain whatever surnames that the individual to whom the PML message is sent has requested. This is an excellent service, provided to contributors to RootsWeb, but it has created for me(and for a few other list hosts who post data)a problem in that we are receiving requests from folks who are basically on "fishing expeditions" - that is, they have no knowledge that any of their people with the surname in question ever resided in the JP - they just want to see what the data says. We all have had to go on such expeditions over the years, but we generally did in the past through books, which did not effect others. That situation has radically changed due to the Internet. I have begun to address it by adding some language to the data posts which some of you may have noticed, in which I say that, "Subscribers to the lists I host can request...". That has resulted in a decline in these PML requests, and I have not yet seen any flood of people subbing to the List, asking for the data, and then unsubbing. So I think that approach will make this sort of thing manageable from my end. It is approaching the time of year when a flood of new people will enter the cyberworld, as a result of computers received as Christmas gifts. As I said last year at this time, we need to be gentle with these new folks, as they will be excited and enthusiastic, and may occasionally violate List guidelines. I will handle any such situations, and your cooperation in allowing me to do so will be appreciated. Flaming is not an option, as tenured members of the JP and other lists I host know. Finally(I'm about done<g>), let me repeat again the guidelines for this List: <> No Flaming - if you have a problem with a post that someone has made to the List, let me know by private e-mail. Anyone receiving flames from other List members via private e-mail should not respond, but forward the message to me for disposition. <> No virus warnings or discussions on the List. If you have a concern about this subject area, let me know by private e-mail and I will investigate. <> No attachments sent to the List <> No off-topic posts or "chat". Our mission is to explore the history and genealogy of the 8 counties in the KY Jackson Purchase region (Ballard, Calloway, Carlisle, Fulton, Graves, Hickman, Marshall and McCracken). We do not deal with other western KY counties, nor with TN counties, except in passing when a progenitor may have come from a TN county to a JP county, or vice-versa. If you make a contact through a List posting, please take the further discussion to private e-mail. Please refrain from posting messages which contain material that may be interesting or informative, but is off-topic for the JP List. If you have something in that category that you think the List should see, send it to me by private e-mail and I'll be happy to take a look at it. As we continue to grow, staying focused and on-topic becomes even more important. Well, that's it for this edition of Administratavia. If you have any questions or concerns, please send them to me privately. There will be an abbreviated schedule of data posts for this week and I'll mention that in tomorrow's message. Until then.............. -B ============================================================
My friends - I am dropping by today to pass along the solution to our latest Puzzler. We only had 16 folks out of 586 subscribers(as of this moment) who sent their thoughts to me on this one. On a scale of 1-10, with 10 representing the most difficult, this one was probably a "9". It is a bit out of the ordinary. You will recall that our task was to try to determine whether NC or TN (or neither of them) was the most probable birth state of Josiah Jackson, for whom there were conflicting states of birth given in the census records, local bios, an old document which the family had preserved, and even within the family descendants themselves. Several of those who responded gave what would usually be the most likely answer - that TN was not a state when Josiah was born, and therefore, he was born in NC, in a county that later became TN. But this case is not as simple as that, because, if we look at a county map of NC, we find Wayne County away over on the east side of the State, and it was created some years before Josiah was born, was never a part of TN, and is still there today. So what gives? In order to determine what is the most likely birth "state" for Josiah, we have to know a little about the history of NC/TN. There was, for a few short years in the 1780's, an attempt by disgruntled citizens of the western part of NC to set up their own state. We have come to know it as "The Lost State of Franklin", as it is called in a work devoted to that subject and published years ago. Franklin had a county within it bearing the name Wayne. The State of Franklin was never formally recognized by either the federal government or North Carolina, and, by 1788, the attempt to create another state was abandoned. There are not many extant records concerning the State of Franklin, but there are petitions both for and against creating the new state that have been preserved. On one of those petitions which was against the formation of the new state, we find the name of Josiah's father, Benedict. That being the case, we can deduce with a fair degree of certainty that Josiah was born in the unrecognized State of Franklin in 1786, in Wayne County, which later became a part of Johnson County, TN, formed years later. Since Benedict Jackson was opposed to forming a new state, and if we assume that perhaps Benedict was responsible for that piece of paper with Wayne Co., NC given as Josiah's place of birth(Benedict died in 1828), it is not a great leap to see that he gave the county, but attributed it to NC, rather than Franklin, as he did not believe that Franklin did, or should, exist. He may well have not known that there was another Wayne County in NC. This family consistently appeared in records in the Carter/Sulliven/Johnson county TN area for many years into the 19th century, so there is little doubt that this is the area in which Benedict Jackson and lived and in which his family was born. This tends to explain to some degree why there was all of the conflicting information in later years. Benedict may have started that ball rolling by saying that one or more of his children were born in Wayne Co., NC, but later, Josiah and perhaps others in the family may have simply taken the approach that they were in an area that ultimately became TN, so, as far as they were concerned, that was their birth state. Obviously, this is all based on reasonable deduction, as determined from the existing circumstances at the time of Josiah's birth. But, from the standpoint of what we know, Josiah was born in the State of Franklin, even though it was not then, and was never, recognized. Sometimes a bit of historical research is necessary to more clearly see where some of these items originated. -B ============================================================
Good evening I am still looking for parents and siblings for my ggg gf ZACHARIAH CLINTON b. 1795 in SC. Married to SARAH HANKS on 18 Nov 1821 in Hopkins Co. KY. By 1826 this family was in Calloway Co. KY as noted on the tax list for that year. They continued on the Calloway tax lists thru 1829, at which time they moved on to Perry Co IL by 1830 and Jackson Co. IL by 1840. Old Zachariah is my long standing brick wall, and any info, clue, or point of direction would be most welcome. Joanne
