    2. Is anyone else researching the family of Jacob Luther who came to Graves County in the 1850s from Dickson County, TN? Jacob Luther (son of George and Mary Bowden Luther) was born August 14, 1815, Randolph Co, NC, and died in 1891 in Cuba, Graves County. He married (1) Elizabeth Anderson and (2) Nancy. The children of Jacob and Elizabeth Anderson Luther included Harriet, Louisa A.(m. Wm. Madison Bullock), William G.W., Mary A.(m. Thomas Easley), M. Tennessee(m. John Mack Suthard), Andrew Jackson, John F.B., Alice D.(m. ? Bennett), and Travis Newton. 3. My friends - Today, we are returning to our review of Marshall County Vital Statistics births for the period 1852 - 1859. We have worked our way to the year 1855 in prior posts. We will finish that year in this installment and move into 1856. Subscribers to the lists which I host can request from me the full dataset for a birth which may be of interest by sending a message to me with the name for which the dataset(which usually includes the date of birth, the sex of the child, if not obvious, and the name of the father and maiden name of the mother) is needed. As always, please do not resend this entire message back to me with your request. There will be no data post tomorrow, as I will be doing teaching duty over on AOL. We will return to data posting on Thursday. -B +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Marshall County - Vital Statistics - 1852 - 1859 - Births - Part 20 M=Male F=Female Covington, M.E. 1. [KYJP] New Series - Hickman County - Vital Statistics Records - 1852-1861 - Marriages - Part 1
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - I hope that all of you enjoyed an outstanding Christmas holiday. I understand that it was a white Christmas up in north central KY. I am posting the first of a new series today on Hickman County VS records in the 1852-1861 time frame. These are marriages, and each record will generally give the names of groom and bride, their ages, where each was born and the marriage date. Occasionally, there may be an odd extra item, but the above is the norm(and, of course, there are instances where all of the above data is not shown). If, as a subscriber to one of my lists, you see a couple in the listing below on which you would like the full dataset, containing the items shown above, just let me know and I will get that information off to you. As always, your help in not resending this entire message back to me with your request is greatly appreciated. Although this material is being posted on Sunday evening, it will serve as the regular Monday data post. -B ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Hickman County - Vital Statistics Records - 1852-1861 - Marriages - Part 1 Alderdice, Joseph Hardin, Susan M. 1. [KYJP] Genealogy & Christmas - A Few Thoughts
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - I had originally planned to present another in the terminology series in tonight's abbreviated data post, but, in place of that, I am going to offer a few thoughts about Christmas and how it relates to our progenitors and to us today. I think many people would be surprised to learn that Christmas was, for many working class families, just another day with its attendant chores, field work and other toils, with perhaps a piece of fruit given to each of the children, to mark the occasion. Many of our own parents and grandparents received little more than some fruit in a stocking hanging on the mantle, even well into this century. With the commercialization of Christmas, in the latter half of this century, things began to change. The peace and gentleness of the Christmas spirit has, in many ways, been lost in the hurly-burly of today's holiday season. Genealogy, in the past decade, has been rapidly rising as an avocation of millions of Americans. It is now estimated that some 50 million Americans are actively pursuing their roots, compared to perhaps 5 million just 20 years ago. What has caused this upturn in family historians? Part of it may be due to a feeling of "disconnectedness" - a subtle desire to return to a time when things were simpler and gentler and when the world was not so much with us. We see old television shows, such as The Andy Griffith Show, continuing to have great popularity. It was good entertainment, of course, but today it expresses the desire of a great many people to live in a Mayberry somewhere, where the most serious decision of the day might be determining what flavor of ice cream to order at the corner drug store. Christmas in these idyllic places would be one in which all could feel the true spirit of giving and peace was the rule, rather than the exception. Our ancestors Christmas, too, was simple and pure, and I like to think that they spent some time, at some point on that sacred day, reflecting on its meaning. I suspect that they did, and, somehow, I tend to think that they may have had a better grasp on it than we do today. So, as we sit down to our Christmas dinners with our families, let us remember those who went before, and the fact that their Christmas days were far different than ours - but just as meaningful. May you all have a wonderful Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. I'll be monitoring the list, but there will be no data posts tomorrow or on the weekend. -B ============================================================

    1. [KYJP] Alex Marshall HILL; 1828-1880+; Graves Co, KY
    2. Rob & Heather Williams
    3. Looking for anyone with information relative to Alex Marshall HILL. He was born about 1828 in Kentucky or Stewart County, TN. I find him listed on the 1870 census of Graves County, KY with the following family members: Wife: Nancy (WILFORD?), born about 1836, died/divorced before 1880 Charles, born about 1860 Tamerew E. "Fanny", born March 1862 Nancy E. F., born about 1863 Lula V., born about 1868 I then find Alex listed on the 1880 Graves County, KY census with a new wife and two more children: Wife: Louisa E., born about 1846 John R., born about 1872 Addie M. born July 1880 There is a marriage record in Graves County, KY for an M. HILL and Nancy WILFORD on 15 Dec 1855. Was this Alex and his first wife Nancy? This record indicates the groom was from Stewart County, TN. This has been a very tough nut to crack. PLEASE, isn't there anyone out there who can help me make a dent in this family? Where did they come from? Which HILL line did they descend from? What happened to the descendants of all these children? Please write me back if you have any information, or perhaps some time to maybe help me work on this. I am a college student with three small children, so my access to records is extremely limited. I have utterly exhausted my resources here. Take care, Rob Williams Ashland, Oregon

    1. [KYJP] No Data Post Tonight
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - Just dropping by to repeat my comment from last night that there will be no data post tonight. I will be over at AOL doing my teaching duties this evening. I believe all requests have been answered, however. In accordance with the abbreviated posting schedule which I mentioned yesterday, this week's final data post will be tomorrow(Thursday). There will be no data post on Christmas Eve, and the weekend follows that, on which I do not post data in any event. I want to take a moment and express my gratitude and appreciation to all of those who have sent me Christmas and holiday greetings, and several very nice virtual Christmas cards, all of which were viewed and gratefully received. I will have some thoughts on Christmas in tomorrow's post. Until then.......... -B ============================================================

    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - Today we are going to return to our review of the Marshall County Vital Statistics birth records. In prior segments of this series, we had moved from 1852 to 1855, and we will continue with that year in this installment. The list below will be somewhat abbreviated, due to a large number of requests for data from last night's posting on Calloway County marriage records that I will be working on late into the evening. I have a small personal request - would the individual who had e-mailed me concerning the Toon family contact me again via private e-mail. The original message which was sent seems to have disappeared from my mail program. If subscribers to the lists which I host see a name in the list below for which the full dataset on that individual would be useful(which normally includes the date of birth, sex of the child if not obvious, name of the father and maiden name of the mother), I'll be happy to forward that information on to you, if you will let me know the name on which you need the data. As always, please avoid resending this entire message back to me with your request by not using the "Reply to" function on your mail program. As I noted yesterday, there will be no data post tomorrow due to my teaching obligation over on AOL. I'll repost that fact tomorrow, however. -B +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Marshall County - Vital Statistics Records 1852-1859 - Births - Part 19 M=Male F=Female Looker, L.
