My friends - Well, this is the "big night" - when we awake in the morning, we will enter a new century and millennium(even if it really does not begin until 2001). It is an event which we will not again live to see, although there may be some very young children and infants who will survive to see the turn of the century into 2100, especially given the advances in medicine and the fact that people are living longer and longer. I have no particular thoughts about this night, other than the fact that it often strikes me squarely when I am asked by younger people about finding great-grandparents that were born in *this century*. When I consider that all of my great-grandparents were born prior to 1845, it does tend to make me realize my age. The last decade of the current century has seen the greatest expansion of interest in genealogy in the United States in its history. I suspect 2000 and beyond will be no different. To all of you who have sent virtual cards to me with good wishes for the New Year, I thank you. I read them all, and I extend the same good wishes to all of you, as we look to the future. In this last post of the year and century, I am bringing to you another in the Skills Puzzler series. This one is perhaps a little more light-hearted than most of them have been, but it still concerns a part of genealogy that we all confront every day - the problem of sobriquets(a ten-dollar word for "nicknames"). Most of us learn very early on, when we take up genealogy, that certain names had sobriquets, and we watch for them. We know, for example, that if we see the name "Betsey", the woman's true given name was probably Elizabeth(although that is not always true - sometimes a girl was named just Betsey - not Elizabeth). The same is true for the given name Ann - we often see the sobriquet "Nancy" used in documents which are really referring to a woman whose given name was actually Ann. Shown below is a list of ten out-of-the-ordinary sobriquets. Our task is determine what the actual given name may have been for each sobriquet, Here they are: Nellie Ade Xr Hettie Liam Nancy(this one is not the usual "Ann") Succe Sandy Lum Miah If you would like to try these, please feel free to respond to the List or to me privately. I will return over the weekend with the corresponding given names. As is customary, there will be no data posts over the weekend, and time constraints may prevent me from offering a data file, as well, but if I can break loose for other duties long enough to prepare one, I'll drop by with that, as well. A good New Year to all of you who populate this List - one of the finest groups of folks I have ever had the pleasure of working with. -B ============================================================

My friends - Today, we are returning to our review of some newspaper snippets from the 1870 - 1900 time frame in Calloway County. We had begun this series some time ago, with two earlier installments in this subject area. JP List subscribers who see a name in the listing below on which they would like the full extract of the newspaper snippet can request it by sending a message to me with the name of the person on whom the snippet is requested. As always, your assistance in not resending this entire message back to me with your request is greatly appreciated. Because of the length of some of these snippets, I would also request that you exercise prudence in asking for multiple names - it may not be possible to provide all of them, if most of them are very long narratives, due to the time constraints I face. These snippets are always very popular items, and requests for them run to large numbers each time I offer them. Please bear in mind that one never knows what will come in any of these snippets. It may be nothing more than a report on someone visiting someone else. Or, it could be a death notice which is several paragraphs long and names all of the relatives. Its a mixed bag. Tomorrow, we will finish out the week - and the century(even if it does not *really* end until a year from tomorrow<g>) - with either a Tips series item, or another in the Skills Puzzler series. -B +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Calloway County - Late 19th Century Newspaper Snippets - Part 3 NOTE: Listings which show a man's and woman's name on the same line are usually marriage notices. Hello all, I am trying to find parents of Alice Mills who died in Calloway Co in 1878. She is buried at Bazzell Cemetery. She was born in McCracken Co in 1869. Her mother who I've been told was a Dunaway (no proof) died shortly thereafter. Supposedly, she was taken to her mother's single sister in Calloway Co (northwest area) and raised by her till her death at ca 9 yr. of age. Could someone do a look up for me of 1870 Calloway Co census for Alice Mills ca l yr. old. Have no idea who took her. The above is a family story, parts of which have not proven true. Hello, Jesse. I saw your posting about Earl HALL and his father James Henry HALL. I am doing some research on an Abraham HALL who married M(ary?) J. Hutchinson probably in the 1840s. I know this is not of direct help to your query, but I'd be happy to send what little I have in case you should learn more about James Henry HALL. Abraham and Mary did have a son named James, b. about 1850 (born where?). I know nothing more James HALL than what is in the 1850 and 1860 Graves County census. -Debra Lowe
Hello Again... It seems the Woodford Holemans are descended from Henry Holeman. I have a transcript of the will of Henry Holeman "of Fayette County, VA". (Later became KY). The will mentions: Wife, Jane Eldest son, Nicholas Son, Edward Three daughters - Rozetta, Elizabeth, and Mary then three more sons are mentioned - William, Isaac, and Jesse; then, four daughters, Sarah, Anne, Jane, and Martha Executors: Son, Edward and David Daret, Richard Rue Written March 6, 1789 Witnesses: James Fisher, Edward Holman, Geo. Holman, Sarah Williams Probated September 1, 1789 (This excerpt comes from __Woodford Estates__, Woodford County, Wills from Book A. You may wish to check Woodford County KY for Holeman. In 1800, there was a Daniel, two Edwards, and an Edward Sr., and also an Isaac, James, and Jane Holeman listed. Thomas and Susannah Holeman moved from Virginia to NC in 1752, with his father, mother, and three brothers. The oldest brothers, Isaac, William, and James, settled in Rowan County, NC, (later Davie County). Thomas and Susannah had 14 children: Absolom, Ruben, Susannah, Rachel, Joseph, Daniel, Rebecca, Isaac, Thomas, Grace, Elizabeth, Jacob, and Margaret. James and Thomas Sr. died in April of 1798 in Wilkes County, NC. I hope this is helpful - there is this and more information in the NC Heritage books - possibly Wilkes County. Shirley
JP Readers: Some of you will recognize me as a BURNHAM researcher, but I have identified another line from the JP area. My husband's HOLEMAN was also there about 1836. Below are the siblings (children of Isaac Holeman and Mary Williams) that I seek marriage and burial information for: James Holeman, b abt 1761 (?) in Rowan Co., NC died abt 1836 in Calloway Co., KY John Holeman, b abt 1768 in Rowan Co., NC died abt 1854 in Caldwell Co., KY Reuben Holeman, b abt 1759 NC, married to Mary Cook had son, Daniel b abt 1790 and d in 1837 Calloway Co., KY. Daniel had a son, Samuel Reuben Holeman b 1829 Calloway Co., KY (he married Martha Porter Walker-this is my line) If you think this is your family, please email me privately and I can share additional information on the other siblings. Regards, Teresa Burnham Harris tharris@arkansas.net
To those interested in Holman families [variant spellings] there were some in Goochland Co., VA in the 1730s, and probably earlier in the parent county of Henrico. They were neighbors of my ancestor John Williams whose land was on or near Tuckahoe Creek. This John Williams later migrated to Colonial Granville Co., NC. E.W.Wallace
I have added many new pages to the Cook Genealogy web pages. My brick wall remains however. Anyone finding a lost great great grandpa Jefferson Davis Cook born ca 1861 (some records state in Calloway Co, KY) and died 1916 in Ballard County, KY - he married Mary Emma Roach in Ballard County and had 5 children .. David Iley, William O., and Jasper Marvin and 2 children that I have not yet found. The 1900 Census finds Mary Emma Cook listed as a widow in West Bardwell (Carlisle County, KY) .. I believe that his father might have been Newton / Nuton.. all help appreciated. My Cook web pages are listed below. Happy New Years.
