-----Original Message----- From: Terry Smith <seeme@snowhill.com> To: KY-Footsteps <KY-Footsteps-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Wednesday, December 29, 1999 4:28 PM Subject: Notes From Grandaddy Sullivan's Ledger Hi All, I've asked Bill if it would be OK to send this little bit of family info. to the JP & JP-Lore lists. He's agreed that it might have some interest to you friends. There are going to be about 6 installments. Recently found in my dad's papers was his dad's Farm Ledger containing stock, crop & labor prices as well as other family & local information covering the years 1892-1915. Grandad was William Howard "BID" Sullivan (1869-1946) who lived & farmed in Graves, Ballard & Carlile Co, KY. He & Grannie Sullivan (Emily Jane Fields) raised 8 children - 6 boys & 2 girls. Most of the children ventured out of the area to make their places in the world. Yet, none of them ever lost their love of Kentucky & home. To their everlasting credit, they also instilled this love into their children & grandchildren - a living legacy for generations to come. Grandad & Grannie Sullivan passed away in 1946 when I was only 2. Having never really known either of them, I feel as though this Ledger gives just a little glimpse into their everyday lives & the events that shaped them. I've left words & phrases just as written over 100 years ago. There are no apologies for spelling or other grammatical errors. Most are noted by ( ) or "SIC", meaning worded as found. Grandad wasn't an educated man in the sense that it's spoken of today. He didn't have much formal education, yet a world of true wisdom seems to have been his. In this new century & new millennium, I hope that this little bit of insight into the lives of family who lived in the last century might act as a bridge connecting us all -- Past, Present & Future. Regards, Terry NOTES FROM THE LEDGER OF WILLIAM HOWARD "BID" SULLIVAN: 1892-1915 ( Grandaddy & Grannie had married in March of 1892, he was 23 ad she was 25 ) - 1892 JUNE 17- S.A. Fields returned home from Piedmont,MO. (S.A. Fields was his father-in-law. The 2 men formed a close bond of mututal respect and friendship. Closer, it seems, than Grandad had with some of his own siblings). JUNE 26- loaned P.P. Green 50 cts. JUNE28- We moved home on P.P. Green's place. Baught(sic) of P. P.Green 86 lbs.(?) Barrel & all; Bacon, 32 lbs@ 10 cents/lb = $3.20. JULY 12- corn, 2 bushels, 50cts/bu, PD-$1.00; corn, 3 bu, PD-$1.50. JULY 25- Bacon 14 lbs @ 10 cts/lb, PD-$1.40 AUG 12- Settled in full with P.P. My friends - Since we are so close to concluding the 1830 Graves County Census series, I am going to post the last part of it tonight, even though we had a portion of this same series yesterday. This is Part 6, and will conclude the series. Subscribers to the lists I host who see a name of interest in the list below can get the full age enumeration by sending a message to me with the name of the individual for which such information is desired, and I will get that out to you. Since we have two days of the same series, please *be sure to specify* Part 6 in your request, which will help me. As always, your help in not resending this entire message back to me with a request is greatly appreciated. Tomorrow, on the JP List, we will finish out the week with another in the Tips series. -B ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Graves County - 1830 Census - Heads of Households - Part 6 (Conclusion) Gladwell, John Lynn, Henry Sr. Cartwright, Justenas Adams, John Williams, Wyatt Clark, Mary Roby, Samuel Gutherie, John Prince, Britton Mason, John Cunningham, John D. My friends - Today, we are resuming our review of the heads of households in the 1830 Graves County census. We are close to completing this review - another post or two after this one will get us through the remaining names. I have today assumed the role of host for the KYGraves-L List, so that list will be included as an addressee on any data posts which I make for Graves County. I hope that the folks who are subscribed to the KYGraves List will also join us on the KYJacksonPurchase List, which is the flagship list for the Jackson Purchase region. The JP List is just a whisker away from our 600th subscriber. I had mentioned, before Christmas, about the usual influx of new subscribers that usually occurs around this time of year. It has not yet happened this year. But it may yet occur. We do have several new subscribers, however, and I welcome them, and invite them to post their research needs for the 8 counties of the Jackson Purchase to the JP List, so that we can try to help them with any puzzles they may have. Subscribers to the lists that I host who see a name in the list below which is of interest, can obtain the age enumerations by sending a message to me with the name on which the data is needed - I will get it out to you. As always, your help in not resending this entire message back to me with your request is greatly appreciated. -B ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Graves County - 1830 Census - Heads of Households - Part 5 Neman, Mary Evers, John Green, Reuben Green, Jesse Green, Anthony Green, Joel Connier, Will Dunn, Henry Jr. Harper, Everett McNeil, Hector Moore, Dunkin Woods, Jas Brookshire, Henry Larkin, John Cargil, Daniel S. My friends - I hope that all went well with everyone over the weekend holiday and that you had no Y2K problems. I had one small one with an old program that I have had for about 8 years, but I tinkered with it and managed to get it up to speed, so all was well on this end. Today, as we resume data posts in the new year, I am going to return to our review of the Hickman County vital statistics marriage records in the period 1852-1861. We began our look at these VS records last week. These are arranged *generally* (but not always) by alphabetical order of the last name, so the marriage for any couple could have occurred anywhere in the 1852-1861 time frame. Please bear in mind that these early vital statistics records are woefully incomplete and inaccurate. Only about 40%-50% of the births, marriages and deaths which occurred in these counties ever found their way into the actual VS records. Beyond that, the information contained in these records should always be held as suspect until another, more reliable source can be found to either validate, or refute, the information. In some cases, such as Graves County, we may have no other records, due to courthouse fires. But it is still worthwhile to remember the caveats about the reliability of VS records in this early time. Subscribers to the lists which I host who see a marriage in which they have an interest, and would like to have the full dataset for that marriage(which usually - but not always - includes the age of groom and bride, the state of birth of each party, and the date of marriage)can obtain it by letting me know the couple for which the dataset is requested, and I will get that information out to them. As always, your help in not resending this entire message back to me with your request is greatly appreciated. -B +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Hickman County - Vital Statistics - 1852-1861 - Marriages - Part 2 Gillsem, Dalbert Bassett, Lisa Hales, James O. Joseph Thomas Frizzell was my great-greatgrandfather. He was the son of William Weaver Frizzell who was married to Nancy Wilson. They were born in Bedford Co., Tn. They evidently settled in Calloway for a time. There are some Ky relatives. I'm in Paducah and have just begun researching this family. William's dad was Nathan Frizzell and he was in the Revolutionary War. His dad was also Nathan. I'll have to check all my dates and post them. That is how new I am to working on the Frizzells. J.T.'s daughter, Ida, married James Armstong Waters. They were parents to my grandfather, Dolph Waters. My mother was Freeda Waters, dau of Dolph and Daisy Schuchardt of Pope Co., Ill. Joseph and Ida are buried in Zion Cem. in Pope Co. also. William and Nancy are buried in Rushing Cem. in Johnson. The Rushing Cem. seems to be a family Cem.
My friends - I am dropping by to give you the solution to the latest Skills Puzzler, which dealt with sobriquets, or "nicknames". There were 22 of you who attempted this one on various names, while 6 people attempted all of them. Of those 6, there were 3 who aced the list - really outstanding. But beyond that, everyone who attempted the task was correct on some one or another of the nicks which I thought would be the most challenging. I probably need to say again(since a couple of people inquired about this when they offered their solutions) that these sobriquets could also be, with perhaps an exception or two, the actual given name of an individual, and not a sobriquet at all. I mentioned that in the original Puzzler narrative, but it is worth noting again. In my own lineage, for example, I have a ggg-aunt whose given name was actually Betsey - not Elizabeth. So we do have to always bear that in mind. Here are the *usual* given names for the sobriquets shown in the Puzzler: Nellie ---------- Eleanor Ade ------------ Adam Xr----------------Christopher Hettie------------Esther Liam-------------William(although, as one sharp subscriber pointed out, this is an actual Irish name, so care should be used here) Nancy----------Agnes (the more popular given name for which Nancy is seen is "Ann") Succe----------Suzanne or Susannah Sandy----------Alexander Lum-------------Columbus (we also sometimes see "Bus" as a sobriquet for Columbus, but this is more common in the 20th Century) Miah------------Jeremiah (more commonly, we will see Jere or Jerrie for Jeremiah) ~~~~~~~~~ It is always worthwhile to have these sobriquets housed in our mental hard disk, since we never know when some scribe who always knew Columbus Parkenfarker by the name "Lum", may have put that nickname down in a record book. -B ============================================================
