    2. I've been keeping up with Bill's "Tips" he posts to this list.....they are extremely helpful to go thru, when trying to find my own answers..... Trying to locate all the Tips was like participating in his "Skills Puzzles" series.....the Tip was "hidden" within another subject...LOL A couple of months ago, Bill gave me permission to post the Tip Subjects and under what Subject you will find it in the JP Archives...Hope this is helpful to all. 2. SANFORD J. MASON,JR.
    3. In my research I need to identify "Doctor Scott".I don't know if he was a MD or if his first name was Doctor or that was a nickname.Whatever his name was, a great uncle of mine was named Doctor Scott Grigsby in his honor. I know the verbal history and I have to consider it factual because of Uncle Scott. I will tell a brief bit of this history in hope someone can help to creak my brickwall. The time is around the end of the Civil War in KY. A gentleman served in the war, came home, due to his illness, to wife and 3 children. They had 4th child. She died shortly after his birth. 'Doctor Scott' and wife took in the father and his 4 children. Father's name"?" Stom/Stum; mother's name"?" Unsell. Children Mary b.1852 KY? d.1925 TX; Martha about same age married a Rawlings(family has no genealogy on her); James about same age, he and his family came to TX with Mary and her family; George the one born after Civil War, all I know is he is buried around Wickliff. I wish that I could recover the family records lost in a house fire. Any help welcome--Alicia

    3. Howdy Everyone! My ancestor, George Denny, was appointed as one of the commissioners to "let the contract and superintend the construction" of the courthouse in Wadesboro (Calloway Co.) in 1830. It was completed in 1831 and served until 1842 when the county was divided.. There was an earlier courthouse as early as 1823. Does anyone know if the second courthouse is still standing and where it is located? Also: Does anyone have any information on these towns around 1830-44? Williston Pooltown Pleasant Hill I know that the area later became Murray but wondered about families that settled in this area during that time frame. Thanks and have a good day! 3. Folks I've just made a strange discovery. I signed up on the Rootsweb site several weeks ago to receive a notification any item went through the lists with the names I was researching on it. Since my vow for the year is to find the ancestors of my GGF, Cenus Hardy KENNEDY, and since I have been searching for the elusive KENNEDY for years - I decided to be "smart" and just put the name "Cenus" as the name for the search engine to look for - mainly because there are so many spelling of KENNEDY/KENADY/CANADA/CANADY, etc. etc. etc. I am getting anywhere from 10 to 15 notifications per day matching "Cenus" . At first I was so excited because it was such an unusual name it must be him!!!! Do you know how many people misspell census!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I haven't been lucky enough yet to get anything but a misspelled census reference. All this time I've been told that Cenus was an Indian name given him by his part-Indian mother. Others said it was an Irish name given him by the KENNEDYs. Since my GAF was born in February, 1870, do you think they just named him "Census" and didn't know how to spell? 1. [KYJP] Some Conversational Tips.......
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - As we round out the first week of postings in 2000, I am going to just visit with you for a moment or two, rather than sending a formal item from the "Tips" series per se. We have a number of excellent researchers on the JP List, and they pass along ideas to me from time to time about shortcuts or tips which they have learned through years of research experience or Internet wanderings. One small axiom that I often mention to folks in private e-mails who seem to be perhaps a bit overly impressed by the Internet and the genealogical information that it seems to hold is this: "The Internet has wonderful indexes - as well as tens of thousands of peoples' opinions on their ancestry." What that tries to convey is the fact that we can find absolutely great indexes(and similar research aids)on the 'Net, which are well done and well sourced. But when we look at the genealogical lineages which are appearing in growing numbers each day on the 'Net, what we see is rarely backed up with source citations, or only partially so. As a result, anything which we see in that form should be checked for accuracy and the source of the data properly cited for our own records. The same is true for any data posts which I make - if one of them connects with your ancestor, and the post is, for example, from the 1830 census of Graves County, make a note of it and then, on your next visit to the library and FHC that you use, check the accuracy of what I posted. There is no question whatever that, in the 20 years or so that I have been transcribing records, I have made numerous errors, no matter how hard I have tried not to do so. It is just the nature of work. Our friend Dave Ray has reminded me in the past few days about the RootsWeb WorldConnect Project. Some of you may already be familiar with it. It is an offering by RootsWeb that allows an individual to post their lineage without having to set up a webpage. It has numerous features associated with it. It can be accessed through the RootsWeb main page at www.rootsweb.com Another of our List friends, Vicky Drake, has been keeping me apprised of her methodical research on the Housden family of TN and Graves Co., KY. She recently had the experience of finding one of her Housden men listed with the name *Houston*, which one would not normally believe to be a variation of the surname Housden. So it is wise to try to think of every possible variation in spelling - even those which seem unlikely - because we never know how the ancestor may have spoken his name, and that is generally the way that the census taker or court clerk would spell it. I have mentioned here before about the Marshall County minister with the name William McGregor - he was of Scotch stock, and we often find his name spelled as "McGreiger". If one thinks of how someone with a slight Scotch brogue would pronounce "McGregor" - something along the lines of "Ma-GRI-ger", it is easy to see how the clerk would spell it. Vicky also reinforces my mention above about using transcripts as a starting point, but always return to the original for final verification. It is really surprising how much is lost by improper transcription. As usual, there will be no data posts per se over the weekend, but I do intend to return with at least one file that I have nearly converted and ready to offer, and I have a unique additional narrative file comprised of the writings of a slave who described her one and only visit to a JP county courthouse in the late 1850's. This African-American woman lived to the age of 108, and I had the honor of interviewing one of her daughters(who was 102 when I talked with her and still mentally sharp)in the 1960's. It was a fascinating two hours that I spent with her, and it was from her that I received this narrative, written by her mother. I think you may find it interesting - and perhaps a little surprising. -B ============================================================

    3. My grandparents were born in Graves County in 1900 and 1901. They married in 1919 and my mother was born in 1920. Does anyone have any clues as to why they would have lied about their ages on my mother's birth certificate? It says they were 25 and 24, not 20 and 19 as they should have been. As far as I can tell from looking at their marriage certificate and bond, everything was done legally. I just wondered if there was some compelling reason or societal issue as to why they would lie about their ages. 1. [KYJP] BYNUM
    2. Hello everyone. I haven't participated with any info or queries lately so I thought it would be a good time to reintroduce the families I am researching from Calloway County for all the new subscribers. They are BYNUM maybe also spelled BUYNAM, BAYNHAM or BYNAM. I have had little luck in tracking this name. My g g g grandmother was Lavinia Bynum who died in Calloway Co. in 1900. She is buried in Lassiter Cemetery #1 along with her husband Pleasant GARRISON who also died in Calloway Co. in 1890. They lived near the Blood River in the old Brandon's Mill area in the easter part of the county. Any info on either of these two families would be greatly appreciated. I am also researching the surnames MILAM, ROBERTS, and SCOTT. Thanks, Daryl Garrison.
