    3. Hello everybody, About a year ago I posted that I had found a truck of old letters and loose papers in a old house in Milburn KY, dating between 1848-1920's, well I'm finally working on putting them on a photo page so everyone can take a look at them and see if they can connect with these families. I've just started to night and still have a long way to go so be sure to check back each night for awhile :) Oh, be sure to check out my photo album also I've been adding more old family photo's. 1. [KYJP] Skills Puzzler # 36 - Divorce Records
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - As we close out another week, I have a new item in the Skills Puzzler series for you. We have discussed, in the past, a little about divorce records in KY and where to find them and how to go about using them. In our scenario for this Puzzler, we have a situation in which a family story, handed down over several generations, whispered about a divorce between Asa Spratt and his wife Agnes in 1826 in a KY county. The story had it that Asa left on business one day and never returned, abandoning Agnes and their two year old son. The county records seemed to give some credence to this story, as Asa was found buying and selling land in that county up until March of 1826. Beyond that time, no further record was found of Asa in the county. More circumstantial evidence involved the fact that Agnes Spratt married in early 1828 to DeWitt Doright, but did so under her maiden surname of Agnes Pettyjohn, which would indicate that she had obtained a divorce and the court had legally restored her maiden name. However, a check of the circuit court minutes and other records in that county, as well as in all surrounding counties(which actually also had extant records), produced nothing in the way of a divorce proceeding for Asa and Agnes. Our task is to find those divorce records, for they did exist. Where should the researcher go from this point? Because of the stigma that was associated with divorce in those days, records were often made as brief as possible, to avoid any more exposure of the "grass widow" than was absolutely necessary. As a result, we have to be careful and vigilant when searching for divorce records. If you wish to opine on this Puzzler, you can send your thoughts to either the List or to me privately. I will return in a day or two with the solution. As is customary, we will not have any data posts per se over the weekend, but, if time permits, I will return with another land grants file offering, or perhaps a cemetery file. -B ============================================================

    1. [KYJP] Legal ages for marriage
    2. Malinda Hawthorne
    3. I'm sure this has been dealt with before, but I can't seem to locate the information. What was the legal age of marriage for a man and woman to be married in Kentucky? Did the bride usually have the consent of a parent whether she was underage or not? Since many of my ancestors went to Tennessee to be married where there were no age or waiting requirements, was there a waiting period necessary between the license date and marriage date in Kentucky? If so, how long? What was the purpose of a bondsman on a marriage license? Was money actually exchanged with the bondsman, or was this a formality from earlier law? Does anyone have any idea of the legal costs involved of marrying in Ky vs marrying in TN? Thanks for answers to any or all of these queries. Malinda Hawthorne

    3. IMy computer crashed on me a few weeks ago and I lost all of my email addresses so if I was corresponding with anyone out on the list please email me with your email and remind me what we were corresponding about. That really sounds stupid but I have a short memory and I get confused real easy!!! I am researching the following families in the Jackson Purchase area. Dowdy- I have made some progress on this. My grndmother was Lucy Ellen Dowdy. She was born 1882 in Carlisle Co., KY Her father was Thomas Dowdy and her mother was Lydia Beard. Thomas was the son of John Dowdy and Paige Harris I think!! Thomas had three brothers, Joseph William Dowdy, John Dowdy and James Dowdy. They all lived in Carlisle Co., KY at the time of the 1880 census. Lydia Beard is the daughter of Robert Beard and Mary Jane Taylor. Lydia Beard and Thomas Dowdy died when Lucy Ellen Dowdy was about 6 years old. I do not know how they died or if they died somewhere else. There are no court papers appointing anyone as her guardian in Carlisle Co.,KY. If any one knows of a marriage record for Lydia Beard and Thomas Dowdy I would sure appreciate knowing about it. If any knows where Lydia Beard and Thomas Dowdy are buried I would love to know that also. Thanks, Janet Morgan Brown

    2. Donna Carol Browning
    3. Hi, Martha, there is a piece written in the "History of Carlisile Co. KY for the years 1820-1900" on the South Ballard Church. This piece was written by Mrs. Kathryn Kelley Webb so maybe if anyone on the list knows her they can put you in touch with her. Anyway, here is what the book says on p. 97. " South Ballard, located west of Bardwell, was taken from a strip of land on the Frank Taylor farm in the 1860's. It is said that the women dug ginseng and sold it to help pay for the building of the church. Thus, the nickname, when Sister Milner and Jane Bell began calling the church 'Ginseng' in fun. The church disbanded about 1930. The ministers were Bro. Ben Briggs, Bro. Pease, Bro. Byassee, and Bro. Ben Huey. W. T. Denton, a Civli War Veteran was one of the leaders. He lived where Prentiss Bodkin later lived. The land is now owned by Ed Mantle. The church building was bought by Tom Davis who sold it to a Mr. Edmonds who tore the church down and sold the lumber. The church ground is now owned by Frank Ireland who can remember going to "preaching all day and a big dinner on the ground" when he was a small boy." so it looks like the South Ballard had become that area west of Bardwell. Hope this helps, Donna On Thu, 20 Jan 2000, Terry Smith wrote: > OOPS ! Should've looked up a date before quoting from memory > on a previous post. Now that REALLY makes me wonder what church that is today, IF it still is one. By 1911 the "south Ballard" area had become part of Carlile Co......Right? Puzzled, Martha

    1. [KYJP] 72 Year Wait For Census Release
    2. Bill Utterback
    3. My friends - On the matter of when census records are released: The law on this matter states that each decenniel census may be released for public use 72 years after the year in which it was taken. Therefore, the 1930 census will be released to the public in 2002. This *does* result in a census being released every ten years, but not on the ten year "mark" in relationship to the census years(e.g., 1920 released 1992, 1930 released 2002, not in 1990 or in 2000, respectively). I think we have just about exhausted this subject area, so let's move on.... -B ============================================================

    1. [KYJP] Divorce in JP Area, 1915 or so
    2. Got a big surprise yesterday when a uncle called me. It seems that my gg grandfather and grandmother got a divorce. Good grief, who knew? He was the only person out of probably 50 or so that I have talked to in the last several months that blurted out that little piece of info. So now I am wondering how to get a divorce record. I checked Ky. vital records, (searchable) and all they have is from 1973-1998. It would have been in either Hickman or Fulton Ky. about 1910-1925. Any suggestions? Thanks Janice Watts Lester

Rob >> Someone out there please explain the above me. I guess my brain is in low gear. When someone asked how often was a series of census records realeased, I said someone told me at the library that a census year of records was released every 10 years. As the above shows, if the 1920 was released in 1992. And then the 1930 is being released in 2002. That is TEN years. Where does the 72 year span come from? I am not doubting what you are saying, please help me get it through my dumb brain... lou
