    1. Jackson County Research
    2. Good afternoon everyone ! I hope that y'all are enjoying your summer. I have just returned from Jackson County. ( It was a balmy & breezy 80 something degrees everyday) I did not have much research luck this trip but wanted to update everyone: Library : As you may know, they are in the process of building a new library. Because of this, alot of material (if it has not been stolen) is either being packed away or left in storage until the new library is finished. The midwife records that were once available have also disappeared. The microfilm machine is out of service, so you will be unable to read anything from the older Jackson County Sun articles or anything else they have on film. It will probaly be this way until the new library is finished. I have been told by a staff member that eventually we will be able to search what is available by computer. This will be a space saver and I believe quite handy to everyone. Geneaology Section : I would like to encourage everyone to write a letter to the Jackson County Library board concerning their geneaology section. I am not sure on the planned size and contents of the new one, but they need to know from us that it is a much needed and appreciated resource for us. Also at one time, there was quite alot of material on hand donated by Edna Jones. Some of that has disappeared from the shelves. But after her passing, material she stored at home was moved and put in storage with someone else. We need to let them know what a benefit it would be to Jackson County researchers to have access to her collection. Below is the contact information: Jackson County Public Library 2nd Street P.O. Box 160 McKee, KY 40447-0160 Phone: 606-287-8113 FAX: 606-287-7774 We also need to remember that when we do go to the geneaology section, the only thing allowed in there with us is a notebook and something to write with. Court House: As far as the court cases go, I was told that because of limited storage space, they only keep those records no farther back than ten years. (Rumor has it that this may not be so). Everything goes to the archives in Frankfort. Marriage records and deeds are available at the court house and go back well into the 1800’s. 1930 Census: Compiled by Martha Jo Marcum Carr and Jerry Wayne Dean. You will find each District of Jackson County presented with an individual index. They have included information from their personal databases, as well as from Jackson County Vital Statistics and Jackson County Marriage Records. You will find maiden names of wives in red and all other added information highlighted in yellow.
