Jackson County Surnames: 1700-present LEAR, COLE, SUMMERS, WARD, CASTEEL, HELLARD, MOORE, CUNIGIM, METCALF, CLAYPOOL, MORRIS, HIGGINBOTTOM TAYLOR, DAY, MORRIS, MARCUM, ANGLIN, SANDLIN, CLARK, CANNEDY, CREECH, HALL, FARMER My family still lives on the same family farm on Indian Creek, Jackson County, Kentucky since 1700s. Our biggest mystery involves my g-g grandfather Thomas "Tom " LEAR. Who were his parents? His other family members? Thomas Lear was born Abt. 1820 in Kentucky. He married Mary L. SUMMERS (daughter of William C. SUMMERS and Sarah WARD) Bef. September 1877 in Jackson County, Kentucky. Both had previous relationships. Tom died December 13, 1921 in Bear Wallow and is buried near Bear Wallow Road, off Gravel Lick off Red Lick Road at the foot of Big Hill, Madison County, Kentucky. Mary was born October 1834 in Iredell County, North Carolina and died Bef. 1920. She too is supposed to be buried at Bear Wallow. I know that the two separated before their deaths. Mary lived with my g-grandfather, the pair's only son, preacher William David LEAR after Tom left. David also had a half-brother John A. SUMMERS. We don't have any information on other children, though we believe there were other children of Tom's. William David LEAR married Roda Elizabeth COLE on Thursday, July 14, 1898, Jackson County, Kentucky. If these names look familiar to you, please feel free to email me. Melissa Simmons
