SHERIFF MATT SIZEMORE AND THE GEESE. By Jess Wilson, as told to me by his brother Everett. The late Matt Sizemore was a sheriff of Clay County who enjoyed his work. He found a moonshine still in the head of a hollow. Several times he quietly visited the still but could never find anyone operating it. One morning he drove up the hollow and hid his car (before daylight) and hid himself where he could watch the still without being seen. He waited without success until almost noon when he heard some geese cackling. Then, he remembered that each time he had driven up the hollow that as he passed the first house, those geese would start cackling. He drove to that house and bought the geese. He came back the next morning and caught the moon-shiners. One day, Matt and his deputy, attempted to arrest two boys. The boys escaped by running off. The deputy started chasing one and Matt ran after the other. The boy that Matt was chasing ran up the hill. The boy was thinking that the person running behind him was his buddy. When they got to the top of the hill the boy sat down without looking up and Matt sat down beside him. As he panted for breath, the boy said, "That S.O.B. would make a man have a heart-attack." "He sure would," was Matt's reply.
