Bill & Donna, Since you are of the same Rev. Jesse Bowling lineage as I am, You should be proud to put the letter "T" in the JOHNSTON name. The best evidence available is the Burial Marker of SAMUEL JOHNSTON, Jr. which clearly and undisputable shows the "T" in JOHNSTON. Be very proud of your lineage as it has been traced as JOHNSTON back into IRELAND, and SCOTLAND. It is only on the Internet that people still question why the name became 'Johnson' with many descents of SAMUEL Sr. and Jr. There are two reasons that predominate above all other explanations: > 1.) People could not spell correctly, and, > 2.) Persons during the Civil War era, changed the spelling (for private family reasons) but most wanted to not associate with their family ancestor. (That still goes on to this day in many families in Southeastern, KY) Cousins are still murdering Cousins and the beat goes on in Harlan, Breathitt, Knox, Perry, Leslie, Clay, Laurel Counties in year 2002) JOHN in CA In a message dated 11/8/2002 4:23:09 PM Pacific Standard Time, [email protected] writes: << Subj: [KYJACKSO] Gabbard Cemetery Date: 11/8/2002 4:23:09 PM Pacific Standard Time From: [email protected] (Bill and Donna Gabbard) To: [email protected] Does any one on this list know who takes care of the Gabbard Cemetery on Black Lick Road, near Letterbox in Jackson County, Ky.? Also, there is some confusion about a name some one may help with. My great great grandparents William & Rachael Elizabeth Johnson Gabbard are buried there. Here is the million dollar question. Does any one know for sure if there is a "t" or not in Elizabeth's maiden name. It's about 50/50 on the records whether there is a "t" or not. The headstone appears to not have the "t" but it is crumbing so is very hard to tell. Below is some detail on them. Any help would be appreciated. 1. WILLIAM9 GABBARD (MATHIAS8, HENRY7, MICHAEL6, HANS MICHAEL5, PETER4 GABBARD/GEBERT, JOHN MICHAEL3 GEBERT, PETRUS2, MATHIAS1) was born October 11, 1833, and died December 03, 1905. He married RACHAEL ELIZABETH JOHNSON, born September 20,1844, died October 22, 1907, was the daughter of Samuel Johnson and Rachel Pennington. Thank you, Love in Christ & God Bless you, Bill & Donna Gabbard of East Bernstadt, Ky. John in California and Bill and Donna; It was a granddaughter of Samuel Johnston that inspired me to compose that Limerick. She said that she and her sister always told their teachers, "Don`t forget the "T", Teacher, Don`t forget the "T". Another example: Patrick Hay married a Miss Gilbert in North Carolina. He moved to Canada then to Knox County, Kentucky where he died about 1815 as Patrick Hays. Two of his sons spelled their names as Hayes and served in the Confederate army during the Ciivil War while their brother, Robert Hays was a Provost Marshall that recruited Union soldiers in southeastern Kentucky.. jess wilson ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, November 17, 2002 12:21 AM Subject: Re: [KYJACKSO] Gabbard Cemetery > Bill & Donna, Since you are of the same Rev.
