Do you know if >the Lails were either Dutch or American Indian? The Lails were German. They came over in 1737 and settled first in Pa (1737-54) and then NC. About 1778 three of the 2nd generation sons went to KY. One of these was my ancestor George Jr. (1735-1793) ,another was Henry (b.bef. 1755-ca.1831) and finally Peter (b.bef. 1755-1780). They definitely spoke with heavy German accents in the early years. In 1780 their settlement was captured by the British and Indians. Peter was killed and most of the Lails were taken to Detroit. Henry may have been taken captive. We do know that George Jr.s eldest son (another George) was taken by the Shawnee and who stayed with them for decades. He settled in Cape Girardeau MO. Henry returned to NC and started a family. The tradition in that family is that his wife was a Native American. No proof of this though. In 1807 Henry left NC. In 1811 he was found in Nashville, TN and in 1818 Jackson Co. IL.. Here is the info from that 1818 census. George and John are the sons of Henry. Special Census 1818 Jackson Co, IL..
