I have a bit of information about Meridith Hughes that any descendant should know, In 1855 Hughes and a "Zeke"? Pennington surveyed the Ballard Smith 40000 acre tract into sections making two townships. The southern part of Jackson County that is east of the Chat-n-Chew Restaurant below Bond and that part south of Tyner was part of that survey. They were employed by the younger Francis Clark who had bought the 40,000 acres from a Mr. Biddle and A Mr Thompson in Philadelphia for $3500.00 in 1845. The south border with Laurel County was the south cource of that survey. The SE corner was where Burning Springs is today and the NE corner was at the mouth of Buncomb Creek. the NW corner was about Dabolt in Jackson County, The Jackson-Clay county line was one of the section lines and the south boundrey of my farm was another. In 1858 when Jackson County was created Meredith Hughes was employed to survey the boundries with Laurel, Clay, Owsley, Estill , Madison and Rockcastle counties. The late Meridith "Bud" Hughes of McKee had the hatchet that was usedto mark trees in that Jackson County survey. Bud was a son of William "Bill" Hughes that was the post masterof the Green Hall post office. I remember seeing him and I was well acquainted with Bud. I could kick myself that I did not ask him to show me that hatchet and at least take a picture of it. I spent more than 30 years of my life working in Jackson County helping build one of the most successful rural electric cooperative in the whole United States. This family was living in East Bernstadt in Laurel County before migrating to Hamilton, OH and then to Wayne County, IN. Emma was born in Clay County, and her Pigg ancestors are well documented.
