Hi everyone! It's that time of year and today I received my educator's guide to A&E and the History Channel. I wanted to mention a couple of programs that I think everyone would find interesting. On November 18, on Biography on the A&E channel, there is a new program about "Pocahontas: Ambassador to the New World." This is an A&E Biography Classroom project, so it will be on at 7 in the morning, Eastern time. There are a couple of websites that they gave as resources that you might like to look at, too: http://www.apva.org/history/pocahont.html This is the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities http://www.nps.gov/colo/Jthanout/Pocahnts.html Colonial National Historical Park -- National Park Service http://www.powhatan.org/ Powhatan Renape Nation http://jefferson.village.virginia.edu/vcdh/jamestown/Pocahontas.html Virtualy Jamestown They are also replaying the program of "Boone and Crockett." It will be on the History Channel on 10/7 and 10/8. Because this is a classroom broadcast, it is on at 6 in the morning Eastern time (tape it!) :) You can check out these programs, as well as several others on the Civil War, etc. at www.AandE.com and www.HistoryChannel.com Bev Hildreth Sumter, SC

R. F. Rose, would you be looking for Durritt Rose who was dropped into the Cat Hole by his wife Elizabeth and his brother Berry Rose. Bobby Lake`s father, Horse Lick Charley, once took me to the "Cat Hole" It was a hole in the roof of a cave. Mr. Lakes said that he once cleared off the hill side around the hole and rolled the logs into the hole. Evidently the surrounding soil had washed into the hole on top of the log pile for I could climb down the slope of dirt to the bottom of the cave. So if there is anything to the story that Durrittt Rose was murdered by his wife and brother, Berry, and thrown into the cave through the hole in the roof, then he is buried under tons of dirt and old logs. As to the exact location I don`t remember, I talked with Bobby just now and he said to take Ky Hwy 1955 to where it crosses Horse Lick and that the hole is down streaam about a half mile up on the left side about a rock`s throw from the creek. I would say that if you were at the Cat Hole you could throw a rock to the creek rather than the other way. I found on the June 21, 1860 census, James W. VW and Elizabeth, Sally Ann, and John W. they were living at house 212 McKee Post Office. Then on June 29, 1860, house 300, McKee Post Office, James W. VW and Elizabeth, Sally Ann and John W. all the dates match. They must of been in the process of moving or moved a few days later. The ages are the same, so you see there is just one set. Just wanted you to know.

A REACH BEYOND THE GRAVE By Jess Wilson (A reprint from THE SUGAR POND AND FRITTER TREE, available from Clay County Historical Society, Post Office Box 394, Manchester, Ky 40962. Price $25.00, add $5.00 for mailing, also available from author at 794 Possum Trot Road. Kentucky residents add $1.50 Sales Taxes.) A person making a will attempts to direct the actions of those who live on. This is known in law as an attempt "to reach beyond the grave" and, in some instances, the hand that attempts to reach too far beyond the grave' has been slapped by the courts and the will set aside. A will in my family that was an attempt to "reach too far beyond the grave" was thwarted by President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation. My great, great, great grandfather William Pigg's will was produced in Clay County, Kentucky Court, Monday, August 2, 1824. He left to each of his 12 children at least one slave. The slave was to be the property of not only that child but any heirs of that child. Not only that, if the slave was a woman, her increase (her children) were to be the property of his grandchildren and the slave's grandchildren were to be slaves to his great grandchildren, ad infinitum. At least that is how I read the following item from his will: Fiftly: I give and bequeath to my daughter, Elizabeth ( Pigg) Payne, a negro woman named Gin for her and her increase to be entailed to the heirs of Elizabeth Payne and her rising generation. " Before twoscore years had passed, Elizabeth's "rising generation" and a lot of other people's "rising generations" were to fight along and bloody war. Whatever the cause of the Civil War, it put a stop to 'the Peculiar Institution" that sponsored the idea that one person had a right to own, bargain, sell or bequeath not only the body of another but could entail "her increase" as well. Sorry, Cramps, but that's the way the ball bounced.
