Good Morning Everyone, Please forgive any duplicate emails this may cause.I am trying to contact everyone an email who signed up for the "Family Names Being Researched" for a couple of reasons. First of all, it has been brought to my attention by one of you that they are receiving an un-godly amount of spam. Please let me know if you are having this problem. What I may have to resort to is having anyone who wishes to contact you, go through me first. Secondly, I want to make sure that your contact info is still current and that you still want to be on that list. Have a good week everyone . . Sarah (Cissy) Thompson / Jackson County, Ky Coordinator

There we located the record to which you refer. We also found the 1829 Tax Records that listed Obediah Ross and Nehemiah Ross right next to each other. While it may be possible that Michael is the same person as Nehemiah, we find only one other reference to him as such. That is the death certificate of his daughter Martha Dupree Ross Bennett. It states that the name of her father was "Mike Ross." You are probably aware, but I thought I would mention that Obediah Ross is listed in the 1850 mortality schedule. His widow was Sarah (Berry) Ross. Both had been widowed and had children prior to their marriage.

Do you know if >the Lails were either Dutch or American Indian? The Lails were German. They came over in 1737 and settled first in Pa (1737-54) and then NC. About 1778 three of the 2nd generation sons went to KY. One of these was my ancestor George Jr. (1735-1793) ,another was Henry (b.bef. 1755-ca.1831) and finally Peter (b.bef. 1755-1780). They definitely spoke with heavy German accents in the early years. In 1780 their settlement was captured by the British and Indians. Peter was killed and most of the Lails were taken to Detroit. Henry may have been taken captive. We do know that George Jr.s eldest son (another George) was taken by the Shawnee and who stayed with them for decades. He settled in Cape Girardeau MO. Henry returned to NC and started a family. The tradition in that family is that his wife was a Native American. No proof of this though. In 1807 Henry left NC. In 1811 he was found in Nashville, TN and in 1818 Jackson Co. IL.. Here is the info from that 1818 census. George and John are the sons of Henry. Special Census 1818 Jackson Co, IL.. Column 1=White Males 21 & up; 2=All Other Whites; 3=Free Blacks; 4=Slaves LAILE, George 1-4-0-0 (b.ca 1790) Son LAILE, Henry 1-3-0-0 (b.bef 1755) Father LAILE, John 1-3-0-0 (b.ca 1795) Son The youngest son moved away from the father and older brother in the mid 1830's, eventually ending up in Texas.

Some of our more recent information about Eliza is that she did not speak English and that she was buried with her Bible, which was written in another language. Yet we do not know what that language was. Family tradition indicates that the family was "Black Dutch." This often referred to Cherokee or other tribal heritage. Do you know if the Lails were either Dutch or American Indian? You mention Obediah and Nehemiah as brothers. We also assumed that was their relationship but now have come to believe that they were othewise related. We belive Obediah to be the son of William Ross and Sarah (Sally) Noland (Noling). Our more recent research (Madison Co., KY marriage records) has led us to believe that Nehemiah's parents were more likely John Ross and Mary Skinner. (Nehemiah's son James had the middle name Skinner.) We belive Mary Skinner's mother was a different Sarah (aka Mary) Noland, so the Nolands, Skinners, and Rosses seem to also be in an entertwined relationship. If you happen to know the town, county, or township in which the Lails were living in Illinois in the early 1800s, I would very much appreciate knowing. Thanks again, and keep in touch.

The Lails were in known to be in Southern ILL in 1818 and 1819. Further there were two other early marriages between the two families; 1)Obadiah Ross, (brother of Nehemiah) married Catherine Lail in 1829.Catherine was the daughter of George Lail 1790 and his first wife. 2)Elizabeth Ross b.ca. 1824 married George Lail in 1840. (2nd wife, he was about 50). If I am correct Nehemiah's wife Eliza was another daughter of George Lail 1790. He does show several girls in the special 1818 Illinois census.
