Jackson County Surnames: 1700-present LEAR, COLE, SUMMERS, WARD, CASTEEL, HELLARD, MOORE, CUNIGIM, METCALF, CLAYPOOL, MORRIS, HIGGINBOTTOM TAYLOR, DAY, MORRIS, MARCUM, ANGLIN, SANDLIN, CLARK, CANNEDY, CREECH, HALL, FARMER My family still lives on the same family farm on Indian Creek, Jackson County, Kentucky since 1700s. Our biggest mystery involves my g-g grandfather Thomas "Tom " LEAR. Who were his parents? His other family members? Thomas Lear was born Abt. 1820 in Kentucky. He married Mary L. SUMMERS (daughter of William C. SUMMERS and Sarah WARD) Bef. September 1877 in Jackson County, Kentucky. Both had previous relationships. Tom died December 13, 1921 in Bear Wallow and is buried near Bear Wallow Road, off Gravel Lick off Red Lick Road at the foot of Big Hill, Madison County, Kentucky. Mary was born October 1834 in Iredell County, North Carolina and died Bef. 1920. She too is supposed to be buried at Bear Wallow. I know that the two separated before their deaths. Mary lived with my g-grandfather, the pair's only son, preacher William David LEAR after Tom left. David also had a half-brother John A. SUMMERS. We don't have any information on other children, though we believe there were other children of Tom's. William David LEAR married Roda Elizabeth COLE on Thursday, July 14, 1898, Jackson County, Kentucky. If these names look familiar to you, please feel free to email me. Melissa Simmons

I am descended from Julius and Elizabeth Hensley Hacker. We have most of the information on them. Julius was a son of Claiborne and Action Roberts Hacker. Would like to correspond with other descendants. The big "mystery" is Henry Anderson, born around 1864. He married Mary House, born 1853. He had three daughters, Maude, Delora and Florence Anderson (my great grandmother). He left the family when the girls were little, and they were raised by their uncle, Sherman House. They lived on Terrill's Creek. I am looking for the burial site of Mary House Anderson and any information on Henry Anderson. Bev Hildreth Sumter, SC

RootsWeb accepts only plain text mail. That means that HTML mail, attachments, ``enriched text'', and a few other formats can't be sent to RootsWeb mailing lists. You can post your message if you send it in plain text; turn off the ``Post in HTML'' or ``Enriched Text'' features of your mail reader, or don't use any attachments. See http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/listadmins/plaintext.html for instructions on turning off HTML in most of the popular mail programs, or ask your ISP's technical support line for help. We've had to institute this policy because of the problems that accompany these fancy mail formats. Some people don't have mail programs that are capable of processing the special file formats. Even among those who do, different mail programs handle these special formats in very different and confusing ways. HTML messages pose special problems to our digested mailing lists. Most of all, HTML-ified mail and attachments place a considerable burden on RootsWeb's overworked machines. All in all, mail in this format produces a lot of problems for RootsWeb's servers and subscribers, so we find it's best just to use plain text. -- The RootsWeb staff
The main family I am researching is Harrison. My great grandfather William "Bill" Harrison was a blacksmith in McKee. I have been told that the old Ben Franklin store is where his shop was located. I have been trying to find a picture of him and his twin brother Joseph. Someone promised me one but now won't answer my emails. So if anyone has a picture of him or his family, I would appreciate having one.
Researching ancestors and decendents of Luticia Cole, best I know daughter of William Franklin Cole, Records show the Luticia married 2 different James Angels and possibly a Tussey in later years. Anyone knowing decendents or information on this family please let me know Sandy Moore Colbert Pulaski Co Ky

Good afternoon everyone ! I hope that y'all are enjoying your summer. I have just returned from Jackson County. ( It was a balmy & breezy 80 something degrees everyday) I did not have much research luck this trip but wanted to update everyone: Library : As you may know, they are in the process of building a new library. Because of this, alot of material (if it has not been stolen) is either being packed away or left in storage until the new library is finished. The midwife records that were once available have also disappeared. The microfilm machine is out of service, so you will be unable to read anything from the older Jackson County Sun articles or anything else they have on film. It will probaly be this way until the new library is finished. I have been told by a staff member that eventually we will be able to search what is available by computer. This will be a space saver and I believe quite handy to everyone. Geneaology Section : I would like to encourage everyone to write a letter to the Jackson County Library board concerning their geneaology section. I am not sure on the planned size and contents of the new one, but they need to know from us that it is a much needed and appreciated resource for us. Also at one time, there was quite alot of material on hand donated by Edna Jones. Some of that has disappeared from the shelves. But after her passing, material she stored at home was moved and put in storage with someone else. We need to let them know what a benefit it would be to Jackson County researchers to have access to her collection. Below is the contact information: Jackson County Public Library 2nd Street P.O. Box 160 McKee, KY 40447-0160 Phone: 606-287-8113 FAX: 606-287-7774 We also need to remember that when we do go to the geneaology section, the only thing allowed in there with us is a notebook and something to write with. Court House: As far as the court cases go, I was told that because of limited storage space, they only keep those records no farther back than ten years. (Rumor has it that this may not be so). Everything goes to the archives in Frankfort. Marriage records and deeds are available at the court house and go back well into the 1800’s. 1930 Census: Compiled by Martha Jo Marcum Carr and Jerry Wayne Dean. You will find each District of Jackson County presented with an individual index. They have included information from their personal databases, as well as from Jackson County Vital Statistics and Jackson County Marriage Records. You will find maiden names of wives in red and all other added information highlighted in yellow. His brother, John, was the husband of Sarah Bell Sea. William was born in 1850, 2 years earlier than John. He grew up in the Horse Lick area of Jackson County, but moved to Disputanta in Rockcastle County where he raised his family. His son James married a Nancy Lake from the same area of Jackson County as the Seas. William died in 1914, five years after writting this will. The Nora that wittnessed the will was either his daughter, or the daughter of John. My records show they both had a daughter Nora, born in 1892 and 1893, but they may have been one and the same. It's that time of year again! Time to come together and celebrate our common families......and friends. The annual Robert "Boston Bob" Baker birthday c elebration will be on Saturday, July 2, 2005 at Possum Trot Farm near Manchester, KY. This is the estate of our esteemed cousin Jess Wilson and his lovely wife, Ruth. I know that you will agree that this is one of the most beautiful areas in the state. Or anywhere. As you know by now, this reunion is for relatives, friends of relatives and relatives of friends of Boston Bob. In other words, just about anyone who is interested in tracing their heritage in America. The Internet has made it easy to keep in touch and learn about our roots in American history but meeting in person confirms our quest. It puts a face with a name, renews kinship and forms new alliances. We will meet beginning around 10 in the morning and continue until dusk. This year we are fortunate to have a local musical group to entertain us. Feel free to bring your instrument of choice as they have agreed to let anyone "sit in" and play with them. I have my kazoo ready. Cousin PJ Robinson booked them for us last year so we can enjoy their talents. Cousin Ruth Klein spoke with the management of the Best Western in Manchester and secured a block of rooms for $53.99 per night. Ask for the "Baker Reunion" rate and specify if you require a smoking or non smoking room or any special accommodation. They also have an indoor swimming pool. The phone number is 606-598-1800. This is a pot luck affair so you will want to bring enough food for your family to add with that of others. For out of towners, there is an IGA Supermarket, Lee's Famous Recipe Chicken and Patty's Restaurant usually has a few of their outstanding pies for sale. Cold drinks and condiments are provided. Please bring photos, birth/death/marriage and genealogical records to share. I am looking forward to seeing all of you again this year along with many new faces. Directions from either Interstate 75 North, or South: exit London ramp and take KY 192 East (Bypass) a short distance to the Daniel Boone Parkway (toll has been lifted) and turn right (east). Take the Manchester exit to US Highway 421 North. Thirteen miles north, on the right, is the Clay Building Supply. Watch for the Possum Trot Road sign, turn right. There will be a sign indicating that you are in the right place for our reunion. About two miles up that road is the large, enclosed pavilion (The Wigwam) and outdoor area where we all meet. This is truly a unique place. If you are using a GPS, the address is 794 Possum Trot Road, Manchester, KY 40962. If you are coming from the North and want to take the scenic route: take US Highway 421 South through Richmond, Big Hill, Sand Gap, McKee, Gray Hawk and Tyner. Six miles south of Tyner, the Possum Trot Road sign will be on your left. This is a little more than an hour's drive from I-75 unless you get behind slow moving farm equipment. If you get lost, you can reach me on my cell phone: 386-299-0565. The Wigwam is on a party line with Jess: 606-364-5867. I will be at the Wigwam around noon on Friday but in the Clay Country area on Thursday.
