I'm sure that Carole won't mind my forwarding this. <waving> As she says... stay vigilant... don't open it unless you know what it is. Just knowing the person isn't enough... check with them to see what it is and why they sent it. Here's the Norton writeup on it... http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.goner.a@mm .html Best, nt -----Original Message----- From: Carole Palmer [mailto:cpalmer@ix.netcom.com] Sent: Wednesday, December 05, 2001 2:20 PM To: KYWEBSTE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [KYWEBSTE] Goner virus I had not planned to advise you of viruses on our mailing list but since I know several subscribers have fallen prey to viruses in the past, I will advise you of one when I *know* it to be actual and not a hoax. The newest virus is called "Goner"; the subject line says "Hi". It asks you to open an attached file, which is said to be a screensaver program. If you open this attached file, your computer will become infected. Like many e-mail attacks, this one then sends itself out to everyone in the victim's address book. It can also sent itself through the instand messaging program ICQ. In addition to ICQ, Goner affects Microsoft's Outlook and Outlook Express e-mail programs on computers running windows. Experts are advising that you not open unexpected e-mail attachments, even if the sender is someone familiar. Update your antivirus software *at least* weekly. Be sure it is configured properly so it will detect incoming virus-infected attachments. McAfee has placed Goner on "outbreak" status. The last virus with that status was the Love Letter attack, which caused billions of dollars in damage worldwide. You can read about the Goner virus at <a href="http://www.mcafee.com/anti-virus/viruses/goner/default.asp?cid=2 636"> PLEASE CLICK HERE</a> Stay alert!
