Here's the Norton writeup on it... http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.goner.a@mm .html Best, nt -----Original Message----- From: Carole Palmer [mailto:cpalmer@ix.netcom.com] Sent: Wednesday, December 05, 2001 2:20 PM To: KYWEBSTE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [KYWEBSTE] Goner virus I had not planned to advise you of viruses on our mailing list but since I know several subscribers have fallen prey to viruses in the past, I will advise you of one when I *know* it to be actual and not a hoax. The newest virus is called "Goner"; the subject line says "Hi". It asks you to open an attached file, which is said to be a screensaver program. If you open this attached file, your computer will become infected. Like many e-mail attacks, this one then sends itself out to everyone in the victim's address book. It can also sent itself through the instand messaging program ICQ. In addition to ICQ, Goner affects Microsoft's Outlook and Outlook Express e-mail programs on computers running windows. Experts are advising that you not open unexpected e-mail attachments, even if the sender is someone familiar. Update your antivirus software *at least* weekly. Be sure it is configured properly so it will detect incoming virus-infected attachments. McAfee has placed Goner on "outbreak" status. The last virus with that status was the Love Letter attack, which caused billions of dollars in damage worldwide. You can read about the Goner virus at <a href="http://www.mcafee.com/anti-virus/viruses/goner/default.asp?cid=2 636"> PLEASE CLICK HERE</a> Stay alert! Surnames: Williams, Teague, Earle, Wells Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/4AB.2ACE/5033.2 Message Board Post: This may help as well. BENJAMIN CLARK EARLE, son of John Earle and Nancy Holland Burns, was born in April, 1816, after his parents had migrated to Mississippi. He married, first, about 1840, a Miss Lucas, and was living in Winston County, Miss., when his only son was born, Charles W. Earle of Dodd City, Texas (1843). He soon after moved to Pontotoc County, where he made his home until his death. He was clerk of the county for a number of years, and during part of the time was Tax Collector, till the Yankees made a raid into Pontotoc County. He then went to Texas and bought cotton and stored it away in different places. At the close of the war, it was all taken by some one not known (so said those who had charge of it), and he never got a pound of it or a cent of money for it. His first wife died prior to 1848, and he married Mrs. Newsom, a native of England, whose maiden name was Howell. She had two sons by her first Marriage, R. B. and W. H. Newsom. Benjamin Earle’s mother, Nancy Holland Burns, made her home; with him after her husband’s death, till she succumbed to cancer in 1848. Benjamin C. Earle was considered a man of some means. He owned a good deal of land, mostly in Pontotoc County, and was able to give his son and two stepsons a quarter section of land each, after the war. He owned about twenty slaves. It was told as a sort of family joke that when Nancy Burns Earle went to live with her son, the others, who knew that as a pioneer woman, she always wore homespun of her own making, asked how she intended to dress when she lived with Ben, who wore broadcloth every day. The old lady answered with a good deal of spirit: “If I hadn’t worn homespun and worked hard, he wouldn’t have so much now, and I intend to dress in my own way.” Mr. Earle died of cancer, at the home of his niece, Mrs. E. L. Rouzee, in Pontotoc, Mississippi, Feb. 4, 1868. His second wife survived him nearly twenty years, dying in 1887.

Surnames: Brown Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/4AB.2ACE/2179.2 Message Board Post: Hi, I am in the same boat trying to research the Brown's out of Hopkins County. Also, there was full blooded Cherokee in this line as well. All I know is Iva Magdalene Brown was the daughter of Elic Morton Brown and Mary Jane Lenning Brown. Elic's parents are Martha Smith Brown and Jim Brown. Elic was full blooded Cherokee (from what I am told) and Mary was Irish. Also, a Hubert Brown signed Elic's death certificate, so I am guessing by some additional reseach that he was the son of Elic and Mary, brother of Iva. I am waiting on the death certificate of Mary Jane Lenning Brown, but that will go a different direction anyhow. Iva's daughter gave me all the information that her mother left her. Her mother was vague about her family and was not close to them. I am also told that the Cherokee tribe originated in North Carolina, however, I don't know when they moved to KY. Elic was born in Hopkins Co., so I need to go further back. I get lost in the Cherokee rolls. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I'm looking for information related to the Dawson Springs Sanitorium and Health Resort. My research leads me to believe this facility was related to the healing mineral water found in the late 1800's. This interest spurns from the research of a Dr. G. F. Russell who had a sanitorium and infirmary in the Old Louisville area. These Louisville places have a certain bit of mystery to them however, and I cannot determine what was treated at these facilities. I know that Russell was at Dawson Springs for at least one year (1914, possibly previous to 1914) as a physician or doctor at the DS Sanitorium and Health Resort. Any information regarding the facility or Russell would be greatly appreciated. Either post or send to lghsgirl@aol.com. Thanks!! Brittanie

    3. I don't normally do this but can't resist. We are always looking for that 'special' gift for our friends and families. A few months ago I added "History of Hopkins County" by Maurice K Gordon to the list of books available from the Hopkins County Genealogical Society. I kept meaning to buy it myself but just never seemed to do it... always forgetting it on meeting nights. Last Tuesday I didn't forget. I bought the book and after getting home I found myself reading in bed and having trouble putting the book down until I just couldn't read any longer. If your ancestors were in Hopkins County in the early days of the county, this is one book that you will want to be sure to have in your library. It is fabulous, and gives so many insights into our early ancestors, where they lived [many times in reference to places known today], where they came from, how and where they worshipped and much more. Give this URL to your husband or wife or child or sibling and tell them this is what you want for Christmas this year... or forget them and get it for yourself! You won't regret it. http://www.rootsweb.com/~kyhopkin/hcgs/books.html in the History Books section. Best, nt

    3. CNET | VIRUS & SECURITY NEWSLETTER Two new worms spreading worldwide November 28, 2001 Vol. 1, No. 1 After an extended hiatus, CNET Software is re-launching its Virus & Security newsletter. Thanks for waiting-we're sure you'll find this new version just as timely and helpful. This newsletter will arrive in your inbox every other Wednesday, or when necessary in case of a virus outbreak. Virus writers don't observe holidays. They don't take days off, either. Over the Thanksgiving holiday here in the United States, two worms--both exploiting the same vulnerability in Internet Explorer--began filling e-mail inboxes worldwide. Badtrans.B is a revised version of a worm that carries a password-stealing Trojan horse, but this time around, it can launch automatically without any user interaction. The same is true with the very small (only 4KB) and not very dangerous Aliz worm. Both automatically executing worms are spreading rapidly, so do your part to stop them: If you're running Internet Explorer 5.01 or 5.5 and haven't updated the software, download the MS01-020 patch below from Microsoft today. Or, just upgrade your current version of Internet Explorer to the latest, version 6.0 below.
