Apparently it acquired that name from the habit of local farmers setting out crocks of buttermilk along the road for thirsty travelers to drink.

Metzger, whom I assume is/was a local artist. Each card had a nice reproduction of a painting that was cut out and then pasted onto a blank postcard, with a hand written caption. Could anyone shed any more light on these postcards, such as how long they were produced and how many subjects were covered? Also, one of the postcards shows a house along US41 in Mortons Gap, and the caption says the road is occassionally known as the "Butterwell Road" (or at least that's what I believe the handwriting says). Has anyone ever heard this name used before. Any information would be appreciated! Cliff Downey downeycj@apex.net

    1. [KYHOPKIN] Morgan Bryan>Thomas Bryan>Thomas Bryan, Martha Jane Bryant
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Bryan, Briant, Bryant Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/ACB.2ACI/158 Message Board Post: I am looking for more detailed and documented information on Thoams Bryan, also referred to by various researchers as Dr. Thomas Bryan, Capt. Thomas Bryan, and Thomas the Tory. Thomas, b. in Virginia about 1735-1738, was one of the sons of Morgan Bryan and Martha Strode. Thomas married Sarah Hunt, and among their children were Thomas, Jr., and Martha Jane, reportedly b. August 5, 1772. I've seen a lot of conflicting information about these persons. Thomas Bryan, Sr., inherited Morgan Bryan's property in Rowan County and is reported by some to have possibly financed the expedition of his brothers, and Daniel Boone, to Kentucky and might have accompanied them, although he does not appear in any history I've seen of Bryan's Station, Kentucky, so if he went, he may not have stayed. He is reported by some to have died in Rowan County and by others to have died in Lexington, Ky. It has been reported that he predeceased his wife, Sarah Hunt, who then married a Gano. It has also been reported that Martha Jane married Stephen Gano, but at least five different husbands have been attributed to her by researchers online, so I consider them all suspect. Stephen Gano is reported by other researchers to have married not Martha Jane Bryan born in 1772, but her aunt, Martha Jane Bryan, who married Edward "Ned" Boone, after Ned's death. Stephen Gano died in 1809 and his will does not name his wife. Another researcher says his wife was named in someone else's will as Jane Gano. I've seen nothing on the family of Thomas Bryan, Jr. A Thos. Briant appears in the 1810 and 1820 Hopkins County, Ky. census. It caught my eye, because the mother of my ancestor was Martha Jane Briant/Bryant, reportedly born March 3, 1772, in Virginia. During those same census periods, her son, Solomon George Briant/Bryant, and his father (Robert Robertson of Augusta County, Virginia) were living (separately) in Hopkins County, Ky. I have found no record of Martha Jane Briant/Bryant except in the family Bible, and her parents are not noted there. I've wondered if she might have been in the home of the Hopkins Co., Ky. Thos. Briant, and died young, but don't know. There is another Bryant family, that of Robert Bryant, who m. Lucinda Culbertson, who moved to Lawrence Co., Indiana about 1829, about the same time that Solomon George Bryant, son of Martha Jane Bryant, moved to Orange Co., Indiana. Bryantsville, Indiana is in Lawrence Co., Indiana. Solomon George Bryant's son, Robert Robertson Bryant, also lived for years in Lawrence Co., Indiana, marrying at Bedford, near Bryantsville. A researcher of our family line in the middle of the last century recorded that Bryantsville was named "for the family", by which I assumed he mean Solomon George Bryant's family. Actually, research indicates that Bryantsville, Indiana, was probably named for Robert Bryant who was married to Lucinda Culbertson. I think he might be related to Solomon George Bryant. Researchers of Robert Bryant and Lucinda Culbertson claim that he was related to the Bryans who established Bryan's Station, Kentucky, which would be the sons of Morgan Bryan, brothers of Thomas Bryan, Sr., but I've seen no documentation to prove it. Still, these clues might indicate some connection between Martha Jane Briant/Bryant, mother of Solomon George Bryant, and Martha Jane Bryan, daughter of Thomas Bryan, Sr. I have no proof; at this point, it is all speculation. Anyone with any information on these persons, especially Martha Jane Bryan or Thomas Bryan, Jr., or the whereabouts of Thomas Bryan, Sr. and Sarah Hunt at the birth of their daughter, Martha Jane, especially documented information, I'd love to hear from you.

    3. Reta, Thank you so much! My last message contained a typo; Cyrus Clark was born in 1815. I notice you don't have Cyrus Clark listed as one of the children of George W. Clark and Eunice Franklin. I received the information on Cyrus Clark's parents from someone else, so don't have documentation to confirm it. Cyrus Clark was born 17 Jan 1815. This date is from the Brown Family Bible. Also listed in the bible is his wife, Hannah P. Gray, b. 24 April 1814. The only other child I had of George W. Clark and Eunice Franklin was Eunice Clark. Thank you for sending names of the other children. I'll add the information to my working file and search for supporting documentation. I really appreciate your help!
