I haven't had any luck finding him in the 1880 census or before. Here is his obituary from the Weekly Calistogan newspaper (Calistoga, Napa County, CA), 14 February 1941: A. P. Mefford Is Summoned After Extended Illness Another of California's pioneers passed from this life when Angus Passmore Mefford succumbed last Friday noon at his home north of town. Mr. Mefford had been ill for several years, and during the past year had been bedfast. He was 78 years of age. Came By Ox Team Mr. Mefford made the long journey to California from his birthplace near Little Rock, Ark., in an ox team. He was but a year old when the long trek started, and he was about seven when the family arrived in El Monte, southern California. They had stopped, however, for some little time in Texas. From El Monte they moved to Westminister, Orange county, and later came north to San Francisco, where in 1897, Mr. Mefford married Miss Marie Magdaline Enderlin. Mr. and Mrs. Mefford made their home for about two years in Cucamonga, San Bernardino county, and for about the same period of time in Lower Lake, Lake county, before coming to Calistoga in 1901. Mr. Mefford spent most of his active years farming. The deceased is survived by his widow and by a brother, Andrew W. Mefford of Santa Ana. There are also two nephews, Cyrus Preston Cunningham of Santa Ana and Andrew W. Mefford, Jr., of Fresno. Funeral Sunday Funeral services were held from the Calistoga Methodist church on Sunday afternoon, with Rev. Fred F. Thornberg of the Community church officiating and the McArthur Funeral Home in charge. Music was furnished by a double quartette from the Pacific Union College, who sang "Nearer My God to Thee," "In the Sweet Bye and Bye," "Safe In the Arms of Jesus" and "Shall We Meet Beyond the River?" Burial took place in the Calistoga cemetery.
