I received a telephone call yesterday from a gentleman in England who is researching a well-known jazz/blues singer from the vaudeville era named Marion Harris. According to information he's collected, he said she claimed to have been born in Henderson, Kentucky, as Mary Ellen Harrison. He thinks it was around 1896 (she said it was slightly later!) and claimed to be a descendant of U.S. President Benjamin Harrison. He is trying to determine if this might be an embellishment and if indeed she was born in Henderson. Does anyone have any knowledge about her that I could relay to him? Thanks much, Donna B.
