If the chat concerns family members in a geneaological sense, then the List is where it belongs. The whole idea of a mailing list is to pick & chose your interests from information shared. One man's junk is another man's treasures. This is true of email that is live today and is true of fetching the same off email archives 2 months or a year from now. Too often answers to questions go private and others are left wondering. Just like the Off button on your TV, please use your Delete button on your keyboard and please don't censure what is shared.
