Michigan Prison Blast Kills 2 Guards Jackson, Mich. -UPI- A series of explosions ripped through the arsenals at the Southern Michigan Prison last night killing two guards trapped behind doors that secured the ammunition storeroom. Most of the prison's weapons and ammunition were destroyed in a blaze that followed the explosions. There were no security threats at that time from the 3730 inmates of what is reputed to be the world's largest walled prison, officials said. It took firemen from the prison, aided by city firemen, more than an hour to bring the fire under control. The victims were Joe Carter, 25, and Max Hindkly, 57, a 16-year veteran guard at the prison. Carter was on duty in the "Bubble," the control room for the giant electric doors to the interior of the prison, when the first explosion occurred. The arsenal was housed in a two-store building of reinforced concrete and brick. Don McWilliams, a prison trusty in charge of the fire department, said it was difficult to battle the blaze because of the exploding ammunition. (Saturday April 1st, 1967, Evansville Press.)
