This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Alves & Hogg Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/3AB.2ACE/55.1928.1 Message Board Post: My reading of E. L. Starling's history of early Henderson Co. gives this information: The Alves family's original name was Hogg [Scottish name, as I understand it.] The mother's name was Alves, but there were no sons to carry on that name, so the Hogg family [who probably got tired of folks calling them Hogg instead of Hogue or a long o sounding more like Hoag] decided to change their surname to the mother's name--Alves. If you are searching for this surname, you probably will find it in Virginia land patents, I believe, which are online at the Library of Virginia website--the part which contains the words *what we have*. Go down the list to Land Records. Also, do a search of the Family History Library catalog to see whether Starling's book of Henderson Co. has been filmed. If so, you can borrow it through your local FH center. Good luck!!! Ask your local public librarian these questions: 1) Do you or a nearby public library have a subscription to the online genealogical database called HeritageQuest? If so, can you show me how to use it to get the best results? 2_ Can you explain Interlibrary Loan {ILL} to me, and does your library participate in ILL? E.W.Wallace
