    1. Re: Moss family of Henderson county
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Moss, Williams, Henderson Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/3AB.2ACE/3294.1 Message Board Post: I expect you will find most of your information about early families of Henderson Co. in the following listed records, all of which are on film through the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, or, if you live in Kentucky, either at the Kentucky Archives or the Kentucky Historical Society, both of the latter in Frankfort. Also, if you can get HeritageQuest [online genealogical database carried by many public libraries] through your local or nearby public library, look for a county history of Henderson Co. by E. L. Starling. It may mention the Moss family in the biography part, but be careful--the information given is sometimes seriously flawed--so check it against official records. Useful/informative films: censuses, of course; tax records; court records; deeds [both grantor and grantee], vital records [marriages, births, deaths ca 1851 or so]. Your John Moss was given as a *witness* to the rejected Rev War claim of my Samuel Farrar Williams (b. 1759 Granville Co., NC - died after 1835 or so probably in Henderson Co., KY). Williams stated that he and John Moss had known each other from childhood. Therefore, I expect you will find earlier records of Moss [which may be misspelled Morse as there was another such family in NC] in Granville Co., NC. Williams and his children did not move to Henderson Co. until ca 1806, he said in his rejected Rev. War pension claim. Apparently, John Moss was still living at that time the pension was filed ca 1833 or so. As a hint, S.F.Williams bought ca 1806 1/2 of Lot 23 in Henderson Co., which he later sold to his son Alfred Williams. Perhaps Moss lived in the same neighborhood. It was on or near Lick Creek. If you will engage a genealogist who knows Henderson Co. well, he or she may be able to provide you with a map showing the LOTs laid out by Col. Richard Henderson and his associates. Henderson was from Granville Co. also. E.W.Wallace
