In a Jackson Purchase Journal [number and date not noted} I located these two abstracted deeds, the first of which is of great interest to me: I am particularly interested in the Williams couple--and their descendants. Samuel S. Williams died ca 1838, and Jesse H. Williams, probably his eldest son, became administrator. J. H. Williams is found later in the censuses of Ballard Co. As I remember, J. H. Williams married Rebecca Cook in Hickman Co. [Deed Bk not noted] p. 332 Deed 12/13/1831 Wm. Hunt Jr. and Samuel J. [probably should be S.] Williams and Catharine Williams, wife of said Samuel, of Hickman county, KY, to Baker Woodruff of same, for consideration of $90 one tract of land being the N.E.Q. of Section 3 Township 4 Range 4 West containing 160 acres. Wit. Robert Walker William Hunt, Jr. Harrison A. Philips Samuel J. ? [prob. should be S.] Williams Catharine Williams Page 333 Deed 5-23-1831 Joseph Elliott and Mary his wife of Hickman county, KY, sells to Baker Woodruff of same for consideration of $200 one tract of land being the N.W.Q. of Section 3 Township 4 Range 4 West containing 160 acres. J.W.Elliott Mary Elliott There is another deed involving Samuel S. Williams, purchaser [grantee], and David N. Dodson, in which Williams bought 20 acres of land on the Mississippi River [DB B-199, 23 April 1833]. This will not be repeated here. Questions and comments: 1. If anyone can identify any of these persons, will you please reply. The two parcels of land being purchased by Baker Woodruff seemed to adjoin. Genealogists have to study associates and watercourses in order to sort out persons with common surnames. 2. Comment: Samuel S. Williams and perhaps Catharine were the parents of J. H. Williams, later of Ballard Co. which was formed from the northern part of Hickman Co. Jesse or J.H. Williams appears in the 1850, 1860 censuses of Ballard Co. 3. Comment: At one time, Samuel S. Williams owned Island No. 2, Hickman Co. (was taxed for it) in the Mississippi River [Hickman Co. tax lists]. My checking the older KY maps sometime ago in the Kentucky Historical Society revealed that such an island did indeed exist but no longer exists. (It probably floated down the Mississippi.) 4. Comment: Samuel S. Williams died intestate ca 1838, and J. H. Williams, later of Ballard Co., was administrator and held an estate sale (Court Order book) 5. Comment: Samuel S. Williams and Catherine Stephens married in Henderson Co., KY ca 1817. Since Jesse H. seems to have been born prior to that date, according to 1850, 1860 censuses, he may not have been the son of Catherine Stephens Williams. Or possibly he was born before the couple married. 6. Comment: Samuel S. Williams, according to research by another person, had a bond [for debt] posted by Samuel Farrar Williams in Henderson Co., KY in the early 1820s. He and the elder Samuel are both listed in the 1820 census of Henderson Co., KY. 7, Comment: The elder Samuel F. Williams (said to be born 1759 in Granville Co., NC, according to his rejected Rev. War pension claim) was married ca 1813 in Henderson Co., KY to a widow and a neighbor--one Elizabeth Stephens, widow of David Stephens. David Stephens and his sister Catherine Stephens [later Mrs. George Sprinkle] as co-tenants had purchased Lot 23, Henderson Co. grant, in 1799. It seems likely that his son Samuel S. Williams married his stepsister, Catherine Stephens. About 1823, they removed to Hickman Co., KY. Samuel S. Williams was soon appointed gaoler [jailer] in Hickman Co., KY. If you have any comments, additions, or corrections, I would be most receptive to your e-mails. E.W.Wallace

There were also Gibsons in Franklin/Woodford Counties from the 1790s. Some of these married Cunninghams from that area. I know that a lot of folks, like my Cunninghams, migrated to Henderson from Franklin/Woodford. According to Ermina Jett Darnell's book, Forks of Elkhorn Church, there were several Gibson families in what is now Franklin County. Some names were: Mrs. Sarah Gibson (daughter of Mrs. Sarah Colquit), who bought land in 1790; William Gibson, Sr. who bought a farm at Duckers that remained in the Gibson family for over 100 years; Henry Gibson and wife Sarah; James Gibson who owned land south of the river; John Gibson who was on Clear Creek in Woodford County in 1807; Samuel and Nancy Gibson who lived near Defoe in Henry (County?) I hope this information is useful to someone. Does the Eakins family appear on the 1880 census for Henderson Co., KY (or a nearby county)? The 1880 census is FREE on _www.familysearch.org_ (http://www.familysearch.org) . (If a person or his/her parents were probably living in 1880, I generally always begin my search with the FREE material. Besides I use the FH Library Catalog almost daily. When I do a PLACE search, it nearly always tells me when a county was formed and from what parent county.) For those researchers who live near an LDS family history center, this is to advise that the Library in Salt Lake City has MANY films of Henderson Co., records. The tax lists are of interest, and so are the court records [Volumes A & B of Court Order Books seem to be missing, even the county clerks not knowing where they are], and the deed indexes, not to mention the deeds themselves. Of course, after 1850 census, the first place we look are for the censuses. Some public libraries have the online genealogical database called HeritageQuest. Ask if your nearby public library has this, and then get a card with a number on it. The number is your password, and then [I speak generally] you can access this at home. E. L. Starling's history of Henderson Co. is on HeritageQuest. E.W.Wallace with early Henderson Co. roots

And, the Sprinkles associated with those surnames have no immediate connection to the Henderson Co. Sprinkle family. But then I followed the thread of the subject back and see that it is from a very old query. What fun :-) In any event, I would be happy to share what I have collected on the Sprinkle ancestors of Lucy Ann, who married George Bullett.

The Stephens siblings [not husband and wife] bought the property in 1799. I do not know who the Sprinkle children were. What do the censuses say? How about deeds or probates? For a time, the Sprinkles were in Indiana--Vanderbergh Co. [is that spelling right], according to another deed, I believe. They may have moved elsewhere in Indiana. I believe it was my ancestor, Samuel Farrar Williams, formerly of Granville Co., NC, who bought 100 A. of Lot 23 from the Sprinkles about 1806. Later, after S.F.Williams married in 1813 Elizabeth, the widow of David Stephens [he was a quartermaster in War of 1812], he sold his part of Lot 23 to his son Alfred Williams. I have not searched the deeds of Henderson Co. in several years. I do not know whether the Sprinkles owned other property in Henderson Co. The deed indexes [grantor and grantee] are available on film from the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, and can be borrowed for a small fee through a nearby FH center. Deeds in KY, as well as court order books, have helped me solve many a relationship. Also probates--when you can find them!!! If anyone knows the maiden name of Elizabeth, widow of Stephens and later wife of Williams, I would be pleased to receive that information. She was mother of about eight children, whose names I have gathered from deeds of Henderson Co., KY. E.W.Wallace
