The Ancestry census info you sent came through fine. The fact that my granduncle William J. Steele had a son Urie, born September 1884 and 15 in the 1900 Henderson census (Caldwell Bucksnort District 10) makes me believe that this is the husband of Nellie Ligon. I found this Urie listed under the surname Steels when I had access to Ancestry a while back). The David C. Steele that married Mary Ligon is listed on my grandmother's mariage permission note attesting to her getting the ok to marry from her mom, Mary Susan (Whitledge) Weldon. So I am going on the assumption David C. Steele is another of my great uncles. Thank you so much.

    1. Re: [KYHENDER] Re: D.C.Steele 1861-1894
    2. Just a reminder in case anyone who has conducted Kentucky research has forgotten. Prior to the Civil War, Kentucky mandated that the counties keep records of births and deaths. Marriage records, which involves legal aspects, had generally already been kept, although we genealogists cannot always find them. (My aunt told me her mother helped her to elope--think of that when doing genealogy.) Anyway, here is what the Family History Library catalog (_www.familysearch.org_ (http://www.familysearch.org) ) says that the Library in Salt Lake City has in the way of Vital Records [births, marriges, deaths] on film. (oops--there is a typo--not mine!!!) Ora Chandler, long ago, transcribed some early Henderson Co. marriage records, and you will find a film of her transcription also listed under Vital Records. Of course, you know that if you have an LDS family history center near your home, you can order films from the Library at Salt Lake City for a rather small fee. Submitted by E.W.Wallace Microreproduction of original records at the Kentucky State Historical Society and the State Arhives in Lexington, Kentucky. ____________________________________ Births, 1852-1859, 1903-1904, 1907; marriages, 1852-1859, 1902-1905, 1907; deaths, 1852-1859, 1903-1904.

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/3AB.2ACE/3291 Message Board Post: My sister [Linda Julius] and I are in the beginning stages of trying to have a Cemetery Preservation Board formed through the Daviess County Fiscal Court & County Judges for Daviess County Kentucky. At this point, the County Judge Elect, Reid Hare, stated to me that his concerns are that the County will be held liable to match any monies the State of Kentucky produces for occasional Cemetery Grants. He has informed me there are probably over 50 cemeteries in Daviess County that are in need of care, and states that the County would not want to participate in a Board, where the County might have the burden of putting up money that just isn't there for this type of project. He has turned over my request to Daviess County's legal advisors, and is having them research what all is involved with a Cemetery Preservation Board and their [The County's] responsibility to it. I also informed Mr. Hare that no matter what the issues were, I still would like a board formed as there is a need in this county for preservation of all known and unknown cemeteries in the county. If you are interested in having a Cemetery Preservation Board formed for Daviess County, please e-mail me with a short paragraph of your wish for one and put in the subject line: Daviess County Cemetery Preservation Board. Also start the letter to: Me [Judy Bailey] All Daviess County Judges Owensboro/Daviess County Commissioners Owensboro/Daviess County Planning Commission Also, please let me know if you are willing to attend any meetings called by the Courts, Commissioners, or Planning board. The more people that make their voice heard about this, the more the need for such a Group will be proven. Also, let me know if you would be willing to participate on the Cemetery Board, or with any cemetery clean-ups, fundraisers, etc. Let me know the name and location of any Cemetery that is NOT taken care of by any Church or other organization and is in dire need of attention. As you all know, my concern has been Fern Hills Cemetery, but I feel sorrow when I see any unattended Cemetery. I think it's everyones place that has any descendant, no matter how remote the connection, buried in a forgotten cemetery to protect and care for their burial spot, no matter where it is. If we don't do it, who will and what would stop progress or neglect from taking these cemeteries over? If you have any question's or want to discuss this further, you can contact me at [270] 926-2094 or [270] 485-1084. An impromptu meeting concerning this will be held this Tuesday, Aug. 15 or Wed. Aug. 16 at Shoney's Restaurant on Frederica St., Owensboro, Ky., early evening. If you think you may like to come, please call me. This can turn out to be a learning experience for anyone thinking of starting such a board in any County. We'll be learning as we go... Everyone is welcome to join us. Thanks Everyone! 1. Re: [KYCHRIST] PUTTY FAMILES
    2. To any person looking for roots of early Kentucky families. As a possible source for EARLY residents of Kentucky, one might try to find three valuable (to genealogists and social historians) volumes of the so-called 1787 Census of Virginia. The compilers are Netti Schreiner-Yantis and Florine S. Love. These are expensive books, requiring lots of transcribing, assembling, on the part of the compilers, and worth every penny. Enlist the help of your local librarian to locate copies of this valuable work. Why should Kentuckians be interested in a census of Virginia? Because many of the early residents of Kentucky came principally from three colonies [states], and until ca 1792, Kentucky was a part of Virginia. The three principal contributors to settlers of early Kentucky were 1) Virginia which claimed Kentucky in 1787. Kentucky did not become a state [commonwealth?] until 1792. and later 2) North Carolina - North Carolinians were instrumental in the establishment of Boonesborough 3) some Pennsylvanians, many of whom had come from Pennsylvania via the Shenandoah Valley or else had gone to western North Carolina and then came to Kentucky. If you think your people were instead of Tennessee, sorry--you have to look in North Carolina which claimed Tennessee until ca 1796 or so. I understand many of the early records of Tennessee are found in Franklin Co. TN records. [Correction, anyone?] This is how I have used this 1787 Census of Virginia - almost every time I go to my local Family History Center [Mormon] Not every FHC has these expensive books, but perhaps a community college near your home may have copies. That's why you need to talk to your local reference librarian. Those people are trained to find unusual sources!!! I search the third volume which is an index to the two preceding volumes. I look for my surnames, and the variant spellings, even Harris having strange spellings. I photocopy the pages of the index which pertain to my surnames. Then I turn to the pages which are indexed and photocopy those pages--PLUS the chart in the first volume [maybe the second also] which explains what the numbers mean. Oh, yes and photocopy the Title Page and copy the copyright material, as you need this for your documentation. [Remember, you must answer the question for others: Where did you get that material?] This is NOT a true census, but is instead tax lists of personal property, not Real property. Thus, if a male age 16 and over but not yet a land-owner, owned a horse, he is probably listed. A horse was personal property. Look around that same county for others whose names you recognize--the wife's maiden name, if you are so lucky to know that. It wouldn't hurt to photocopy all the tax lists for that county. Remember, these residents intermarried, either previously or later. So keep an eye on those folks!!!! Do NOT overlook the fact that some persons may have owned personal property--horses, cattle, slaves in SEVERAL counties. One of my ancestors owned personal property in Albemarle Co. VA as well as Madison Co., which later became Kentucky. He was already making his move to Kentucky, in other words. At his death, I discovered he still owned property in Albemarle Co., as his widow gave power of attorney to one of the sons to finalize plans for that Virginia property. There are no guarantees that this single work will solve your problem of determining the origins of your families, but it is a good start, and you should know about this valuable resource. I hope this helps find your early Kentuckians (who may be from Virginia--which was a huge place in 1787, including what is now West Virginia.) E.W.Wallace who has many Kentucky ancestors-- who went to Texas beginning 1835 [when it was part of Mexico]

My husband descends from Cyrus Oscar Harbourt and Louisa Ellen Byrne (aka Burn, Burns) who married in Daviess Co. Ky in about 1882. Their oldest child was John Leslie Harbourt. Louisa was born in Meade Co KY abt 1855, but her family moved to Curdsville between 1860 and 1870. Her father was Ignatius M. (Miles?) Byrne son of John Byrne and Catherine Hill, both b. in KY but parents from Md. Louisa's mother was Sarah Elizabeth Rhodes, d/o John Abraham Rhodes and Louisia Edelen. I have a great deal of information on the Louisa Byrne line - they descend from Kings/Queens of England, France and nobles of many other countries (through the Hill, Miles, and Gardiner lines] and are also related to Robert Burns, the Scottish poet. On the 1870 cenus in Curdsville , Daviess Co. KY, Ignatius Burns & family were on same page as James Gootee. Also living with them was Charles Hurburt 36, farm laborer. I don't know who he is and how he t! ies in with Cyrus Oscar Harbourt at all. However, there was a Parker Herbert/Hurburt/Hubbard [you see Hubbard sometimes-my husband's nickname was Hub] who married Sabina Reighley, who seems to have either been the same person who married George Gootee or her sister. There was also a "T. Parker Herbert b. 1814 in Campbell Co. Ky who I believe to be a distant relation to my Cyrus Oscar Harbert/Harbourt. T. {Thomas} Parker Herbert was the son of Meredith Helm Herbert who was the son of Thomas Herbert who was the son of Josiah Herbert and Margaret "Peggy" Helm. Josiah b. in NJ , moved to Loudoun Co VA then to KY. I believe, but don't have complete proof yet that Cyrus Oscar Harbourt, son of Israel Harbourt/Herbert b. 1818 VA, was the son of Peter Herbert Jr b. 1783 VA, and that he was the son of Peter Herbert Sr. b. 1744 NJ who came to VA with Josiah Herbert [likely a close cousin] in late 1770s. The connection I still need to link up is that of Israel to peter Jr. Any info! rmation on any of these people would be appreciated.

    1. Re: [INVANDER] Re: Burial of Confederate Soldier
    2. I found your James in 1870 in Union CO., KY, Raleigh pct, #119-- James is single, age 34, and is living with a Joseph Reburn 29 and Joseph's wife, Mary, and the Reburn children. 1880 census of Union CO KY has James Davenport, 44 KY; wife is Matilda 38 and their children are listed. 1900 census of Union CO., KY shows Matilda Davenport, Mar 1842, widowed, 9 ch/ 8 living and some of the children are listed. Could your James have been buried in Union CO where he lived? That would make more sense in the 1890's, than to bury him in Evansville, or even Henderson-- unless he had relatives who already had burial ground paid for. You might try subscribing to the Union CO., KY, mail list and see if you get any hits, or try to find someone there (and in Henderson and Vanderburgh Counties) with access to the cemetery books. If he has no marker, he probably will not be in the book. Chances are, though, he might have a gov. marker due to his Civil War service. However, that might depend on which side he was on-- KY had soldiers who fought for either side since KY was a supposedly neutral state. Union soldiers could receive a government stone, I don't know about the confederate soldiers. I am also curious, was Louisa Matilda Catholic that she was buried in St. Joe Cem in Evansville, or did she remarry and convert? The St. Joseph office (can be found online) is very helpful if you call. There is also another St. Joe Cem at St. Joe, IN (in the northern part of Vanderburgh CO), so make sure you get the right St. Joe-- don't know the street but it is on what I call Mesker Park Drive. Guess I am dating myself on this. Good luck.
