    1. [KYHENDER] Books on Heritage Quest
    2. Dear Researchers, Have you talked to your local public librarian lately? If not, check to see whether there is a webpage, hopefully with an online catalog. Ask that librarian whether the local library has an online genealogical database called HeritageQuest. If not, ask whether there is a nearby library or a State library which has this subscription. Private parties cannot subscribe. You need a library card with a number on it--the number being your password. I just recommended to someone searching the surname Alves to try to find E. L. Starling's history of Henderson Co. Lo and behold--it and 12 other books are on HeritageQuest. If your library does not subscribe to this useful (and at times surprising) database, you must join and get your genealogy society to join the Friends of the Library. In California, taxes have been cut so that Libraries were starving to death until citizens formed Friends of the Library and held book sales and other fundraisers. Genealogists, even with the internet, cannot do without LIBRARIES. That is why so many of us make pilgrimages to large genealogical libraries, such as the Family History Library in Salt Lake City. Winter time is best for serious researchers who can stand the altitude and desert like weather--the library is filled with adults in winter--not noisy kids who hog the computers and generally are a nuisance!!! 1. [KYHENDER] Cemetery Records for Henderson Co., KY
    2. In the event researchers are near an LDS Family History Center [and have time to read microfilm], many cemetery records for Henderson Co., KY [but not all--of course] have been published and have been filmed by the Library. Therefore, for a small fee, for a limited time, one can rent the film through your local FHC. A couple of the newer publications have NOT been filmed. As usual, cemetery inscriptions are hit and miss. Not everyone was buried in a cemetery. Some people were buried on their own private property. Also, a lot of cemeteries have been overrun by highways, housing developments, dams, flood control, etc. E.W.Wallace

    1. [KYHENDER] David Stephens and his Wife Elizabeth of Henderson Co., KY - 1800 census
    2. David Stephens and his sister Catherine [later Mrs. George Sprinkle of Henderson Co. and later of Indiana] bought ca 1799 about 200 acres of Lot 23, Henderson Co. and grant. I believe Purviance was the agent. According to deeds I read about this property--trying to find the chain of title--there were eight Stephens children, several of whom seemingly died without heirs. Some of those who had descendants were Catherine Stephens [dau of David--not his sister] married Samuel S. Williams. They moved ca 1825 or so to Hickman Co., KY. Williams died intestate ca 1838, and there was some correspondence that the widow might move to Illinois. (With a surname like Williams, who can find her?} Her eldest son or stepson, Jesse H. Williams was later in Ballard co., formed from Hickman Co. Elizabeth Stephens [not her mother] married Joseph Orendorff and moved to Logan Co., IL One of their sons, Alfred Orendorff, became a prominent attorney in Springfield, IL and died ca. 1909. [female] Stephens married Frederick Weller. They moved to Mississippi Co., Arkansas, but seemingly Mrs. Weller died, and the father Frederick and three sons--John D.[David], Felix Grundy, and one other [my notes are on another computer] returned to Henderson Co., KY and appear on some censuses. Nancy or Ann Stephens--probably never married. She taught school, according to an old letter in my extended family. If you have any linkage to any of these persons, please e-mail me. All genealogies are full of gaps, and this one is no different. There were two sons, whose names I do not recall, but they died without issue. Their residences after Henderson Co. are unknown. Surnames: Alves & Hogg Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/3AB.2ACE/55.1928.1 Message Board Post: My reading of E. L. Starling's history of early Henderson Co. gives this information: The Alves family's original name was Hogg [Scottish name, as I understand it.] The mother's name was Alves, but there were no sons to carry on that name, so the Hogg family [who probably got tired of folks calling them Hogg instead of Hogue or a long o sounding more like Hoag] decided to change their surname to the mother's name--Alves. If you are searching for this surname, you probably will find it in Virginia land patents, I believe, which are online at the Library of Virginia website--the part which contains the words *what we have*. Go down the list to Land Records. Also, do a search of the Family History Library catalog to see whether Starling's book of Henderson Co. has been filmed. If so, you can borrow it through your local FH center. Good luck!!! Ask your local public librarian these questions: 1) Do you or a nearby public library have a subscription to the online genealogical database called HeritageQuest? If so, can you show me how to use it to get the best results? 2_ Can you explain Interlibrary Loan {ILL} to me, and does your library participate in ILL? E.W.Wallace

    3. Netta, Thanks for the compliment about my name. I checked with my sister-in-law about the headstone (she lives in Evansville) and she emailed me a photo of the headstone for them. So the problem is not that they don't have a headstone and it also wasn't all that long ago. He passed away in 1964 and she in 1986. I saw other relatives listed from the early 1900's. Is there anyone that I can contact about this? 3. Yes there is a way to find all the names in a lot. Lots were sold primarily by 6 spaces or 12 spaces. However, we have found that spaces have been sold to other members of the family or to complete strangers. We have the lots in several notebooks at the Society's library that I can look in. Who are you looking for? Netta Mullin

    1. [KYHENDER] Court Order Books and Deed Books for Family History Research
    2. When I began my research of Henderson Co., KY, I hired a reseacher who lived in Frankfort, KY because I was still working and did not have time to read microfilm myself. No internet for civilians, in those days. Experienced as he was, the reseacher started with the Court Order Books. Later I carried on with dissecting the deeds, and I did untangle some family mysteries by reading deeds. I have found that in many instances, deed indexes are used so much by the general public as well as title searchers, attorneys, etc., that many of the old handwritten books have been copied, and the deed indexes are 1) typewritten and 2) alphabetized, making it easier for the researcher to seek out his family's surnames. In some counties in Kentucky, the watercourse is given in the last column of the deed index. In that way, one can group the neighbors. (My ancestor lived on or near Lick Creek.) It has been years since I have looked at the Family History Library films for the deed indexes of Henderson Co., but I urge persons looking for ancestors to use deed indexes--both grantor and grantee. It helps to understand the history of Henderson Co.--that this was the part of the Richard Henderson grant which Virginia awarded Henderson--after the American Revolution. (I am simplifying this.) Therefore, many deeds will bear the notation Henderson & Co. grant. Wasn't Samuel Hopkins the main agent for Henderson & Heirs? Because I read the Court Order Books for the early days, I learned that my ancestor had remarried and became the guardian of his stepchildren, along with his new wife. Also, he was frequently delinquent with his taxes and was triple taxed. And so on. Later, a cousin found a bail bond, which seems to be the only document linking my ancestor with his [youngest?] son. Censuses are important, but we all need to expand our horizons and find other records which were created--not for family historians--but for the government, mainly. Sometimes church records and old letters exist, and in that case, you are lucky. At one time, I found on the shelves of the Old Kentucky Historical Society [in the old building] a transcript of some of the minutes of Grave Creek Baptist Church. Later, in the new building, I could not find this transcript. Anyone know what happened to it? E.W.Wallace
