Netta, Try your local arts and crafts store. Ben Franklins or Michaels. I don't know what they have there in your state, but these are the two big ones here in Washington. You will find what you need there. Be sure to tell them what you are doing and what you are looking for. Thanks for the suggestions to try an art store and a Christian book store. I don't know why I didn't think of these two choices. Appreciate everyone's input, now I have a direction to go in and will be able to get my family pages documented. You guys are the best! Netta
I used Dick Blick a lot when I was teaching. Still get some paint, etc. from them, from time to time. The only place left here, though this area is growing a lot, to buy art supplies is Hobby Lobby, with a few craft things at Wal Mart. (That's where I buy the acid free gel pens, actually.) Hobby Lobby looks like they are trying to go out of the art supplies business. They have some crafts, a few art supplies, but the store is crammed with fake flowers and knick knacks from China and such places. I don't like to order things. I want to check out every hair on every brush, carefully examine the texture and condition of every piece of paper, and make sure I'm not getting inferior or damaged materials. The local Hobby Lobby just doesn't carry a lot of things that I use anymore. People here either order their materials, or go to a larger city. Another option is to go to a scrapbooking store and look for archival quality materials. Our old Carnegie Library was restored and is the repository for historical materials for this area. When all these old family pictures came down to me, and I retired, I went there to ask how to identify, preserve, and prepare the materials I have. Got some good advice there. Also, I had some experience from working with art for so many years. There are quite a few things online through places like the Smithsonian, too, concerning how to take care of things. We also have two large city libraries, a small college library, and a large university with many libraries and collections to get advice from. The Carnegie Library is where I was told about the acid free pens, Scotch Tape, tissue paper, boxes, mylar and other things they use. Online, several people told me about some places to obtain archival materials. If I remember correctly, one of those places is Light Impressions. Another possibility might be a good office supply store. So many people these days are interested in preserving and gathering their family pictures and materials, so more places carry these kinds of supplies. I started mine, years ago, with India Ink and calligraphy. Now, I'm using a Pen Tel needle tip pen with acid free gel ink. It dries fast, and I haven't had any smudging. It's fine enough that a lot of ink is not released at one time. The Bible I'm writing in is one of those large ones with lots of pictures and illuminated lettering, so the paper is a bit thick. If your print isn't showing through, then, unless you use a lot of ink, your pen ink should not show through either, I would think. I am an artist, and work with various kinds of papers, inks, pencils, -all kinds of art materials. Pencil can last a long time, too, but, over time, it seems to fade and is hard to read. Just depends on the kind of pencil used and how heavily it is applied. Also what material it is used on. Netta, You might call Dick Blick Art Supplies in Evansville. They have archival materials listed on their website. I found ink and markers but didn't see any pens. A query [gatewayed] contains this information: A.G. Roberts is listed on the 1920 US Census, married to Laura Belle (NOE) Roberts and living in Henderson. A.G. was born Alexander Goodman Roberts and his profession on the 1920 Census is photographer. I found photos on the Henderson, KY, Rootsweb photo link that had his signature at the bottom---WOW!!! I can't find a birth record for him, though it says birthplace is KY. He was born around 1857. Comment: If this man was born ca 1857, it is probable he appears in the censuses of 1860, 1870, etc. as a child. The 1880 census is FREE [at least a transcription is free] on _www.familysearch.orgn_ (http://www.familysearch.orgn) Look for the word Census and then from the drop-down menu, choose US - 1880. Also, I understand that for a time prior to the Civil War, most counties in Kentucky kept records of births, and deaths, and many of these have been filmed and are held by the Family History Library in Salt Lake City and probably can be borrowed through a local FHC. However, if the person posting the query does not know in which county he was born, then she/he may have to hire a researcher to search a CD of Kentucky Vital Records held in Salt Lake City but not available on loan. Do a PLACE search in the FHL catalog [online at _www.familysearch.org_ (http://www.familysearch.org) ] for Kentucky and then look at all the entries for Vital Records. One of those is a CD-ROM. It may be held at Brigham Young University library also. E.W.Wallace

Roberts, was the photographer on Main St. in Henderson. To my knowledge, the studio no longer exists. I'd heard of these beautiful family photos that were thrown out at a garage sale by a relative's soon-to-be ex, and when I went back to the 1920 US Census, I found that my husband's great-great-granddad was the photographer who owned Roberts Studio. I found two photos uploaded to the internet with his name on it---treasures to us, subjects unknown, but it's his work! I'll let you know if I learn more. Juli Roberts
