hi netta. the time period is up to about 1830, so the dates are pretty vague. what i do know is that peter watson was born in 1810 in kentucky, and had moved to clay county, arkansas by 1833. it is possible that he had a brother named tarlton/tarleton/talton (no dates) who married mary j. ____ and had two sons, john and william, before also moving to clay county where they had more children. both peter and tarlton were missionary baptist preachers. it is also possible that peter's father was named william, as that was what he named his first son (b. 1833, AR). just yesterday i found out about the possible link between peter and tarlton, so thought that might catch someone's eye. scot -----Original Message----- From: netta1@bellsouth.net To: kyhender@rootsweb.com Sent: Thu, 15 Feb 2007 8:12 AM Subject: [KYHENDER] Watson Hello Scot, Welcome to the Henderson County Mailing List. _okcphyl@cox.net_ (mailto:okcphyl@cox.net) has given a long list of surnames of Henderson Co. This is an attempt to address one family which is listed: Response: I am not familiar with most of the names you posted in your LONG query, which gave few dates unfortunately. Queries get better responses if some dates are given and some background of what searches have already been made. I may be able to tell you something of the Negley family but only because a distant cousin Floyd R. Negley (now deceased) and I discovered that his Negley ancestress, Nancy Williams, a daughter of Samuel F. Williams (b. ca 1759 in Granville Co., NC-d ca 1830s [exact date unk] in or near Henderson Co.) was the first wife of George Negley. Apparently they had been married in Christian Co., KY. Negley, of course, is found later in Henderson Co., KY. I purchased from Floyd one of several volumes on the Negley family, who were originally from Pennsylvania. I will 1) have to locate that family history somewhere in this genealogist's cluttered room and 2) know some more about one Charles Negley, as that particular name does not ring a bell with me. Tell me more about Charles Negley. Are you able to access the online genealogical database called HeritageQuest through your local public library? If so, perhaps you could find a census giving some more information about each of the persons you list. There are too many for me to tackle. Most of the time, HQ is accessible on remote computers to those who have a card number from a subscribing library. If your local library does not subscribe, ask your librarian what nearby libraries do subscribe. Then ask whether you can get a library card from the subscribing library. E.W.Wallace

The early KY Moss family came from Warren Co & Granville Co, NC. It is thought that the oldest known ancestor was Benjamin Moss. The David Moss Family book by Thomas Chester Moss, M. D. (decd) is an excellent source. A copy of this book should be in the TN archives & the Memphis library. With the information I have at this time I don't think there is a connection unless William U. or Elijah S. stayed in Henderson CO. after 1870. I think William may have for a time. Calvin is my ggggrandfather and since my my research is with census records, I have only been able to trace him to 1850 in Hart CO, KY. where he has only been married for about 1 1/2 years to Amelia Page. Their only child then was William Henry and he is 9 months old. Between 1850 and 1856 they had two more children in Hart CO., Sarah Payne and Rose Ann. This is also where I find Elijah. He is living with Calvin and Emilly and he is 2 years younger than Calvin. In 1860 I find Calvin and Emily in New Albany, Floyd CO., IN. and no mention of Elijah, but two morw children, Joanna and Joseph. They are twins and by the 1870 census they are no longer mentioned and presumed dead. In the 1870 census, Calvin and Emily are living in Upper Town Pct., Henderson CO., KY. and they ! have another daughter, Ida Belle, born about 1870. I have been able to obtain a lease agreement for a farm on Evansville Bend that Calvin and his brothers rented in 1870. This is where I find Elijah's middle initial and the first time I find William U. I think I have also located some tax records from the library that list a William U. Williams in Henderson as early as 1867 or 8 and in those tax records I can see that William had at least 2 children. In 1872, Calvin has moved the family to Terre Haute, Vigo Co., IN. where my gggrandfather is born, Jefferson Davis Williams. Then in the 1880 census, Calvin is back in Hart CO., KY. Sometime around 1890 Calvin and family made their way to ST. Joseph, Buchanan CO., MO. where Calvin died. In the 1900 census, Emily is widowed. Hope this might help. Glen Williams

Hi, I am working on my Apollonia Schmitt-- Jacob Alles line of Dubois CO. Jacob was a big furniture maker in the county, and invented the roll top desk. He did not get a patent on it though. Two of his children went to Mt. Vernon where they began similar stores-- Adam Joseph Alles (had two wives) and Joseph William/William Joseph Alles and his wife. Another son, Jacob JR Alles, went to Henderson where his store is still in existance. I would like to fill out this branch, and share any info I do have on the Alleses. Thanks. Do be careful when you rely on the recommendations of many of the employees of hobby and craft stores. Many of them do not know and will either tell you just anything to make a sale, or they will just leave you to figure it out for yourself. Possibly they will just tell you that they don't know. It's important for you to read, experiment, and research things for yourself, so you will know what to buy. There are lists such as GenPhoto where you can ask about materials you can use safely. I did a search for groups that deal with preservation of old photos and materials, and found several where I have exchanged information. The best advice I got was from the Carnegie Library here, which is the repository for historical materials for this area. They showed me what they use, how they prepare things like old photo albums. You might ask your local library as they would be familiar with materials. Of course, over the years, as an artist, and art teacher, I've had experience in doing things like calligraphy and various kinds of drawing, painting, etc. Bitter experience has taught me some things. 8>)) When I buy materials, I not only have researched them, but I also have to look at and touch every brush, every pencil, ever piece of paper, canvas, or whatever it is I am going to buy. I have had too many shipments of hundreds of dollars of materials, that arrived unusable because the employees of the places I ordered from just sent any old thing. Brushes with hair falling out of them, damaged paper, India Ink with a loose top where everything in the box was ruined, dried tubes of paint, pencils that weren't soft enough, paper that was bent or had a fault through it, etc. Just something to think about. I know our Hobby Lobby store here has cut out so many of the things I use, and the employees don't know anything about art type of materials. They can't tell you where to find most things in the store, much less understand how to use them-unless it's something they use themselves, which is rare. About all they do is clean, and put things on the shelves, move them to a different place for a sale. Most are students who change jobs frequently. If you have a small art supply store, owned by an artist or someone knowledgeable about art, that would be a good place to ask. We used to have several small shops, owned by artists and members of the local art league. Those were excellent in carrying materials, helping with questions, and would order whatever people needed. Then Crafts Etc., Wal Mart, then Hobby Lobby came in, and the small shops couldn't compete. Now people have to go to the big special art stores in Houston, about 100 miles from here, to get good quality art materials, and talk to people who know what they are doing. A scrapbooking store also might have materials, but, again, research for yourself. As I said, what I am using, personally, to label my old pictures, and in my large family Bible, is a Pen Tel Energizer needletip black Acid Free pen that I buy at WalMart. Prior to that, I had been using India Ink with a dip style pen. ( I know that India Ink will last! Also, when using it, it is important to use a small amount of ink and make practice strokes first. It might be important to know how to do lettering or calligraphy before you start trying to put in information with India Ink. You can make a permanent mess really fast with that ink!) And, above all, it is important to consider what kind of paper your Bible is printed on. Is it thin, like most Bibles? Or is it heavier paper? The Bible I have is on heavy paper. It has a gold cover that looks like leather with edges that overhang. Looks really pretty, but those overhanging edges are beginning to deteriorate. I may have to undertake a project to make a new cover for it-someday. So many projects, so little time! Good luck. Cecelia in Texas > Netta, > > Try your local arts and crafts store.
