    3. Actually everything I have said about the museum and the historical society came from the committee. The address that is listed at the end Ms. Jerome's email is Larry Strehle's address and I spoke to Mr. Strehle on the telephone just the other day AND the fate of the EVERYTHING inside the OLD museum is UNKNOWN. It CAN NOT be moved from the old and rotting building. Until another site is found to move it too. It was also according to Mr. Shtehle that the Murals and Painting's ARE in danger of being bought and removed from the building, and then taken Canada. Not everything IN the old museum belongs to the society either. According to the ladies at the Union County Library, They have loaned out ALL the Newspaper abstracts to them And they are still in the building. I have TRYED to contact EVERYONE on the committee of the Union County Historical Society as well as the Judge Executive of Union County. I have only been able to contact 2 committee member's. And according to both ONLY the two have individuals have access to the contents. I only began my interest in Genealogy in July of 1997. And at that time knew nothing about the HIstorical Society but I DID try to volunteer when I found out about it. And everytime I called the phone number's listed on the door of the museum I never got an answer or a call back when I left a message on the machine until October, when it was too late! The museum had been condemned by then. In the last 2 weeks I have tryed to find out what I can do to help, I have tryed to contact Mr. Girten and see if he actually planned to sell the paintings to the business from Canada and I can not get an answer or a reply when i leave a message. I have also spoken to Paul Cassidy, The Planning commisioner, at the city building and he told me that everything is up in the air until they find out if they can get the money for the Old Officer's Club. And Mr. Girten is NOT under any obligation to "hold" the building for the historical society. Melissa Brenda Jerome wrote: > > I think there are some misconceptions being posted. Note from Suzanne: Mary Owen is buried at Fernwood with all her children, who predeceased her. I am fairly certain she was a daughter of William Hickman who, according to "Forks of Elkhorn Church", was the "first Baptist preacher in Kentucky" and who lived first in Fayette, then in Franklin County. I do not know how Mary Owen found her way to Henderson County, or who she married. If anyone has this information, I would love to have it! The most interesting thing about this will is Mary's provision for her slaves. I wonder if they took the offer of freedom in Liberia! Suzanne Russell auntsue@twlakes.net

    3. June 1900 Shooting Affray At Clay Results in the Death of a Business Man Not Involved In the Fight Dixon, Ky., Jun 24 In a shooting affray between Jack Raybourn and John McGill, at Clay, A.N. Skinner was killed by a shot fired by Raybourn. Skinner was one of the most prominent business men of Clay and was a member of the Knights of Pythias and Masonic lodges. The trouble came about by McGill and Raybour wrestling in the morning, both being intoxicated. They got into a general fight and Raybourn bit a piece out of McGill's neck. Both men armed themselves and Raybourn went to Skinner's livery stable, where McGill was employed, and opened fire on him. The first shot struck Skinner in the head from which he died in about two hours. Skinner was putting some harness on a horse at the time, and had a collar and bridle on his arm when killed. The horse was hit twice. Neither of the men shooting was hit. An attempt was made to arrest Raybourn by a citizen, but being a powerful man, he fought his way out of the stable and made his escape. McGillw as arrested and placed under bond. A posse is after Raybourn and he will probably be arrested tonight. Betty Sellers

    3. I agree wholeheartedly Melissa - I was the Union Co KyGenWeb coordinator for a short time and I visited Union County and the historical society. What pride they had showing me thru their museum in a very old house. Everything neatly organized. Ruth Heffington remarked to me what pride the Camp Breckinridge soldiers had when they come for their reunion each year. They would visit the museum and bring her something to put it in... The military museum is fantastic and they do have just one of the murals.. Would be of great sorrow to see these murals bought and moved .... Not only does the museum have a military room but they have so much vital information. I'd like to see something done to. I am a member of the society and I'm looking forward if anyone could suggest what to do. -----Original Message----- From: Melissa Shreve-Owen <blondie@Dynasty.Net> To: kygen-l@rootsweb.com <kygen-l@rootsweb.com>; KYHENDER-L@rootsweb.com <KYHENDER-L@rootsweb.com> Cc: KYROOTS@LSV.UKY.EDU <KYROOTS@LSV.UKY.EDU> Date: Sunday, January 18, 1998 8:53 PM Subject: [KYGEN-L] Union County Historical Society >For those of you that don't know, The Union County, KY Museum has been >**Condemned**. 3. For those of you that don't know, The Union County, KY Museum has been **Condemned**. The Union County Genealogical Society is in the process of trying to obtain the The Old Officer's Club, that houses the Beautiful Paintings and Murals that were painted by a Prisoner of War. (See http://www.rootsweb.com/~kyunion/prisoner.htm) Along with the Museum being condemned, EVERYTHING in it!! Only TWO people in Union County have access to Resources that are stored in the Old building on W. McElroy. And Even they are NOT suppose to remove anything, They check the building on a regular basis to make sure that nothing has been tampered with. And then leave OUR heritage there to literally rot! (My Opinion) The Cost of the new building is not that much considering it houses the infamous paintings and murals. I have also been told that a business man from Canada wants to buy the Murals and paintings, AND then remove them from the walls of the old officer's building and TAKE THEM to CANADA! THIS IS NOT RIGHT! (Again, My opinion) My Question what can we do, as Union County KY Researcher's do to help?? Donations? Join the Union County Historical Society? Are there any laws to stop the selling of these painting to someone that is going to move them out of the County? Any and all advice is appreciated! Melissa
