    1. PIKEs in Union County
    2. John Zerby@I-O INC 02/20/98 05:44 PM I am looking for info about the disappearance of my g-gf Martin P. PIKE of Union County, apparently in 1861 about the time the Civil War started. Seeing all these old newspaper articles started me wondering if there might be some mention in local newspapers back then. He lived in Waverly, near Morganfield. Does anyone know if any area newspapers from the 1860s and 1870s are archived anywhere? If so is anyone interested in researching this for me? For a fee of course. Contact me at jzerby@i-o.com if interested. I have a few more details. John Zerby, Houston, Texas

    3. Pam- It's a deal! Tell me about your TAYLOR's in Woodford Co. I probably have an advantage because I am Treasurer of the Woodford Co. Historical Society so I have access to just about anything you need. Also, for the last couple of months I have taken on the project of updating the family files and getting them into tip top shape. So we have added a lot to them and filed and sorted and cross referenced, etc. It's a never ending job but is looking really good now. Lots of additions sent in by members both local and out of state. As far as what I need....... My main line of research in Henderson Co. is Joel GUDGEL(L). Let me know about your TAYLOR's and allied families in Woodford Co. Thnkas for your offer. 2. Hi Maria.... >Goodness, where in Webster Co, are you at. Granted, I was in the next county. We took US 60 to Henderson and then just followed the road into Evansville. Took about 1 hour to reach Evansville from our home in Dekoven, not far from teh Illinios line. I'm cracking up with laughter! Linda asked how long it takes to get from Lexington to Henderson. We live in Lexington so I told her how we go to Evansville. I'll bet you thought if we were driving 70 mph we were sure going noplace fast. <g> You'd be surprised at how many people assume I live in Webster County. But I think the case is that most county sponsors do not live in the county they sponsor. That's not a statistic, just a guess. 3. Glad I could help. I am try to collect as much family history as possible and make it readily available on my Web Site. Genealogy research is new to me, however I am an old hand at computers and software. I would like to have the your Bentley information and any other individuals who might be connected to my family lines. I have been fairly successful lately in getting information through the internet. I understand you are heavily involved. My GG Grandmother Ann Cathrine Bentley was a sister to your husband's G G Grandmother Mary Jane Bentley. I have considerable information about some of their descendants. Much of the descendant information came from Sharon Manning mailto:LoveGenCa@aol.com . I noticed in her notes she reference you for part of the information. > -----Original Message----- > From: Betty Sellers [mailto:kyseeker@comsource.net] > Sent: Friday, February 20, 1998 3:01 PM > To: KYHENDER-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: Re: GUDGEL(L) surname > > > John - > Your information on your family has helped me a great deal. 2. Hi Linda... My mother lives in Evansville and we go I-64 to 164, which cuts south to Evansville, hooks up with US 41 and you go on to Henderson from there. It takes us three hours and 10 minutes (no stops) driving about 70 mph to get to our exit in Evansville (Lloyd Expressway). Probably takes another 15-20 minutes to go on to Henderson. Some people take the toll roads and the KY route via the parkways but Bill is convinced this is the faster route. Going on to Henderson, though, might make a difference. Have a nice trip. 1. Sentenced in Matrimony 1885
    2. Betty Sellers
    3. Madisonville: One of the most intensely ludicrous, ridiculous and also interesting trials that has occurred in Hopkins county was held yesterday evening at the court house, before his honor A.J. Sisk, county judge. The defendants were J.H. dame and his son William, and Dames son in law William Neal. It was on a writ of Habeas corpus, brought by Ed Allender. The parties all live seven or eight miles northwest of this place and are near neigbbors. Some time last November the plaintiff, Allender, undertook to chastise his eighteen year old son, Joseph. The young gentleman rather than take the proposed chastisement, retreated to a neighbors house, claiming that the old man had, during the affair, drawn a shot gun on him. The young man finally took up his abode among the defendants to this suit. Allender began to try to induce the runaway son to return to his bosom. Libery was sweet to, the youthful Joseph, who discovered about this time that J.H. Dame had apromising daughter, who was exceedingly lovely to him. About a week ago the old man, finding that he could not persuade his son to return to him, having warned the parties not to harbor his offspring longer, got out a writ of habeas corpus, and had it served upon the parties, returnable last Tuesday. Only one, William Dame, respondedat the time. While this was going on some parties assisted the young man to steal the lovely young Miss dame, and on last Tuesday evening they boarded the train and went to springfield, Tenn.., where the boy and girl were made husband and wife. A writ of arrest was issued for J.H. Dame and William Neal, and yesterday they were brought into court and made to answer the charge of detaining, hiding or keeping the festive Joseph. There were about half a dozen witnesses on either side. Much of the evidence was conflicting while the whole of it was exceedinly amusing. The whole family trouble with the courtship of the young people was detailed, to the amusement of the large crowd which was attracted hither by curiosity. Lawyer Brown acted for the defense, while lawyer Pratt prosecuted the case. The Judges opinion was tha tJ.H. Dame and William Neal should pay the cost of the prosecution for not answering the first summons, but were found not guilty of forcibly detaining the boy. The young man, Joseph was found guilty of matrimony, and sentenced to live with his new wife until separated by death, whil Ed. Allender, the plaintiff, was sentenced to lose the work of the boy from this time and forever more. New Era 1885 Betty Sellers
