If you are referring to John William Wood, then my information is correct. But is listed in the incorrect order. He first married Lillie August Edwards. They had 6 children: Edna, Vernie, Samuel Virgil, William Earnest, Robert who only live a short time, Inez (My Mother). Lillie died when my mother was only 2 years old. Grandfather John Wood then married Edith Ophra Tapp. They had the following children: Billy John who only lived a short time, Mary Sue, And Celil Leon. John Wood's mother was Samantha Elizabeth Tapp. His second wife was related to his mother but I do not know how. I hope you are working on the Tapp family, I have so little information about them. I understand my Aunt Mary Sue Wood (Hill) has a book on the Tapp's. Hope to check it out in a few weeks when we get a chance to go up there. My uncle Samuel Virgil Wood is 92 years old and in very good health. He live near Clay, Ky. My mother lives near Providence, KY. > -----Original Message----- > From: Jane McBroom [mailto:janemcbroom@postoffice.worldnet.att.net] > Sent: Friday, February 20, 1998 10:58 PM > To: KYHENDER-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: RE: GUDGEL(L) surname > > > I an having trouble with John Wood family are the children in the correct > marriags???? > > > > > > >Glad I could help. Ron, Yes the Newspaper's from Union COunty Have been microfilmed. I don't know how to obtain looking at a copy. The Union County Library HAS a copy, but they loaned them out to the Historical Society. And the contents of the Historical Society Are still in the Old Museum. I was right about ordering information for the Union Co Obituary Abstracts being on the Union County page. The URL is http://www.rootsweb.com/~kyunion/society.htm And the book is $8.50. Carole Palmer, who's turning into a regular blabbermouth
Hi Ron and all... This would be later than the information Ron wanted about his gr-gr-grandpa but I thought others might be interested. Ruth Heffington has abstracted and published Union County Obituaries 1924-1927. This 1997 book can be ordered through the Union County Historical Society. I don't remember the price but it was very inexpensive. Address of the society is 5 Congress Drive, Morganfield KY 42437-1111. Maybe there is ordering information on the Union County KYGenWeb page. Hi Maria....You gave me another good laugh because when I responded to Linda, I didn't realize it was going to the list, either. Oh well, we maybe we provided some comic relief. <g> Hope you get over that flu bug. Carole >Yea, and I thought I had replied to only you, but saw that it went to the WHOLE list, so I just do it again, reply to the whole list..... Does anybody know if obituaries from Union Co newspapers have been microfilmed, 1899-1900, or the best way to go about looking for an obituary in the Union Co papers? I'm trying to find out information on my gg-grandpa who died in Union Co between 1899-1900. Thanks. Ron in IL -- Ron Phelps r-phelps@uiuc.edu
Hi Linda, here is the information on my TAYLOR ancestors. Lazarus TAYLOR b. c1726 in Northumberland Co., VA. He married hannah BRADFORD c. 1748. They had children - Joseph, Susanna, Thomas, Bradford, Wilder/Wildy, Leanna, Argyle, John and Jane. Argyle is my next in line. He was b. 25 May 1750 in Prince William Co., VA. He married Mary TEBBS. Their children were Artemisia, John F., Catherine, Lucretia, Merdith Fleet, Foushee T. and Wildey. I know that Lazarus and Argyle were in Wood ford Co., KY. I would like to know when and where Lazrus died. Also, did Argyle die in Woodford Co. Anything about any of their children would be most welcome, too. I have the information from the book about the Forks of Elkhorn Church. I, also, know that Lazarus' son, John, was the preacher who wrote "History of Ten Chruches". I would be so happy to receive any information on these Taylors. Thanks for your offer. I have copied your notes and will see what I can find in Henderson Co., KY records on your people. Pam Groover
I would think it meant "POWER OF ATTORNEY"
My family lives in Union Co. The route described by Carol below is the best way. The toll roads and parkways take you farther south of Henderson and you have to spend time coming north. From Louisville, you can get to Henderson in about 2 to 2.5 hours. So add the time from Louisville to Lexington and you've got it. Is the book "The Pikes of Maryland and Kentucky" still available to order or out of print? I am also researching this line of ancestors. KY and MD Surnames: VIZE CLEMENTS HITE PIKE MADDOX SMALLWOOD ELAM Glenda Sue Vize gsvize@aol.com
Jeff Davis and Fairview The following is an extract from an article in the August number of the Southern Bivouac, by Col. E. Polk Johnson, of Louisville. Then followed rapid inquiries after the health and welfare of old friends in Kentucky, during which the marvelous memory of the man was show. Calling them by their baptismal names, he would ask after the children of his former friends whom he had not seen for years when he was most familiar with Kentucky. He appears to have a remarkable memory for names. relating an incident connected with his not very remote visit to his birthplace , at Fairview, in Todd county, Ky, he gave a happy illustration of this faculty. he said that at the old fashioned barbecue given in his honor during the visit, much attention was shown him by certain elderly ladies of the neighborhood which he had left when a boy of eight years. One lady was especially attentive and anxious that no one of the viands should fail to reach the guest. As the dinner progressed, his mind reverted to his boyhood days, and he recalled a sunny faced little girl whom he had called his sweetheart at the mature age of eight years, she being perhaps a year younger. So he asked the lady, What became of Patty Bell? A flush of gratified pride swept over the dear old ladys face as she responded: Why Mr.. Davis, Im Patty Bell. Not the honors won on the field in Mexico, the civic crown earned in the Senate, nor the high duties of a proud presidency had driven from his mind the name of a little loved one, through time with a merciless hand had carved strange lines upon her face when they two met again upon the declining slop of live. John, Are you aware of the book "The Pikes of Maryland and Kentucky" by Lamarr Hamilton? It traces the descendents of William Pike and Susannah Mills, including their son Stephen Pike and his wife Beatrize Vize. Stephen was the fist Pike to move to Union Kentucky. I am a descendent of son Joseph Pike and wife Sarah Howard. Their daughter Susan C. Pike married Thomas Wight and moved to Union Kentucky in about 1852. I can't say if the book has any more on Martin's disappearance, but the book is pretty well researched. I have found a few errors in some of the in-law lines of Brothers and Gough, but generallly trust his work. Rachel Rose

Compton and Martin Pike, the former the son of Benjamin Compton, and the latter the son of Stephen Pike and Beatrice Vize. Martin Pike built the dwelling house J.J. Roberts now occupies near the store, and from him Mr. Roberts purchased both dwelling and store. Mr. Pike married Mary Wathen, daughter of Dr. Wathen and Nettie Ann Davenport. A few months after his marriage, he went to New Orleans with a flat-boat, trading, which was the custom in those days, and was never heard of afterwards. His wife, some ten or twelve years afterwards, married Thomas Melbourne." I just want to say a big thanks to our researchers for posting their obituaries in the WKy Obituary Database... expecially Jane McBroom and Debbie Hammond....and Yvonne Cameron. Jane is posting Henderson County obituaries and Debbie is posting Christian... and Yvonne from Trigg. At the present there are over 1100 obituaries to search for your surname! Yesterday evening I entered some obituaries from 1886 - and even tho some were just a few lines - there was a 'record' of that parties death... Again thanx - and if you have any to add please do! I agree with you ladies - we think because we are talking to a county host that they live a couple blocks from the court house, take the hometown newspaper, and pass the library everyday.... I'm guilty guilty ---. When I was the coordinator of Indiana - one lady laughed so hard cause I thought she lived in her county and she was from Ohio... Our Henderson host lives in Florida... and I bet he's laughing at us! I have two Kentucky counties and don't live in either -- but I was born in Trigg.... I guess it is where your love of home is --.... by the way -- On newspaper abs --- Would anyone like for me to put up the assisnation of the Gov. of Ky in 1900? I have it in a document and it was quite a mess --.... -----Original Message----- From: cpalmer@ix.netcom.com <cpalmer@ix.netcom.com> To: KYHENDER-L@rootsweb.com <KYHENDER-L@rootsweb.com> Cc: troutman@interquest.de <troutman@interquest.de> Date: Friday, February 20, 1998 2:19 PM Subject: Re: GUDGEL(L) surname >Hi Maria.... > >>Goodness, where in Webster Co, are you at.
