    3. I am trying to locate some Lathrams that married into my Hardisty family in Fort Worth, Texas. I have not been able to locate anything locally, therefore, I have decided to try Henderson County, hoping that they might have traveled with the Hardisty's to Texas, or met on the way. If anyone can help, please let me know. My web page is geocities.com/Heartland/Acres/6197. Thank you for the help, yet again. Anna Lee Clark, Paradise, Texas

    3. In case some of you missed Brian's post about the new auto query and auto obit's, plus mailing lists, new equipment and future expansion and 'space'... I am reposting this... Please feel free to post to this list your genealogy, your comments, your questions, etc. anytime. The list was set up for this purpose for Henderson the mother county of Webster and Union If you have a problem - bring it to me at kyseeker@comsource.net KYHENDER-L has far less traffic than many county lists. Hi all - I'd like to announce the birth of cgi.rootsweb.com, a Pentium II 233 MHz machine with 256 MB of 10ns SDRAM, 4 GB of IDE ultraDMA system disk, and a 9 GB Cheetah ultrawide ultrafast SCSI drive for user programs. This server rocks. (: "cgi" is the production twin to the little "test" server. We plan to be running mod_perl on "cgi"'s Apache server, so perl performance should be very good for programs that have been designed to run in that environment. In the short run "cgi"'s primary users will be the Surname Helper project, the KY query system project, and a major virtual domain that is moving to RootsWeb. In the long run, we'll be opening "test" and "cgi" to any RootsWeb Webmaster who wants to develop their own cgi-bin facilities. Please be patient for a bit and don't ask me for help in using the box for new projects, though, until after the query systems have settled in and I've finished the other server upgrades I'm working on. Members of the sysadmin team who need root should drop me a note and make sure I have your fax/phone numbers, and the queries folks who need user accounts should also contact me. My next project is bringing up the new search engine server, which will get the USGenWeb Archives and mailing list archives reindexed and give Marc Nozell plenty of room to bring his HTML mailing list archiver back on line. After that, I'll be doing a major upgrade to the Web server. Besides making the machine bigger and faster, this upgrade should let us install Isearch on the server so Webmasters can build efficient indexes for their Websites. After that, I'll be doing a major upgrade to the mail hub, which is just a little 486-133 and keeps getting swamped just trying to handle the feeds to the big list servers. After that, I'll probably be working through the big mail servers and doing memory upgrades and those guys. They're all 256 MB machines, but it looks like they'd be happier at 512 MB or even 1 GB. No rest for the wicked, at least not for awhile yet. Cheers, B. -- Dr. Brian Leverich Co-moderator, soc.genealogy.methods/GENMTD-L RootsWeb Genealogical Data Cooperative http://www.rootsweb.com/ P.O. 2. Just a note to those looking for out-of-print books... Try www.abebooks.com , a service that allows searches of a number of used book stores. If they have it listed, you'll be able to see who has it, the condition, and the asking price. If you want to order it, they e-mail the store of your interest, and you work out ordering it directly with the store. I recently picked up a copy of "Scotland's Story", an old hardbound collection of stories written for kids. 'Thought I'd never find one, but about six stores had it, and I got it for only $8, postpaid! Give 'em a try! Randy Ward (not connected with them in any way, except as a satisfied customer)

    1. Archive concerns? (was RE: GUDGEL(L) surname)
    2. Terri Hauk
    3. Hello all, If you are wondering why the RootsWeb Archives disks filled up so quickly and are no longer working, please take a look at what is going on right here on this list. Someone posted this original question last Friday and others have quoted it, according to the '>' signs, at least *7* times thus far. What I have below is a *tiny* portion of the huge list of multiple messages that were quoted and requoted and requoted. The subject line of the original (GUDGEL(L) surname) also no longer has anything to do with the content of the current replies being tacked on to this original! Please keep in mind that netiquette rules suggest using a relevant, descriptive and informative subject line. Also that you cut and paste ONLY THE RELEVANT INFORMATION from a previous message, enough to provide context, and not the whole message. And especially not a whole *series* of messages! All this goes into the archives--seven or more copies of a single query that takes up more space with each successive reply that is added. I personally would prefer to have the space for at least 7 other queries that may provide information or clues for others in the archives. And it's not just a single thread where this is happening--there are a couple going on at any given time. This really eats up disk space quickly when multiplied by hundreds of mail lists. Off my soapbox now.... ;-) Thanks for 'listening'! 1. Robards = "The Sanctified Town"??
    2. MRS PAMELA J GROOVER
    3. DW, that is a very interesting story. One of my families in Henderson Co is the Robards. The town was named after the brother of one of my gg grandfathers - his name was John David Robards. I would be interested in the story of why Robards is called "The Sanctified Town". Maybe someone else on the Henderson list will know. I know that there are several on the Henderson and Webster Co. lists that are very knowledgeable about that area. I believe that I have Dentons in one of my Henderson Co. lines, which include EADES, ADKINS, HUNTER, ROBARDS, MCMULLIN, MOSS AND MARSHALL. Let me hear from you when you receive the book. 2. On a visit last fall to my ancestral home (well, one of them anyway) of Robards,KY I noted a sign on the south edge of town calling it "The Sanctified Town". It was explained by someone in town that the name alluded to the title of a book written by a Kentucky writer named Lucy Furman. I understood that the book was written in the 1890's, which happens to be when several of my genealogical families lived in Robards. The reason for my interest in the book is because the characters in the story were reportedly thinly disguised versions of the local townsfolk. Naturally I wonder if any of the book's characters resembled any of the folks there of interest to me, (surnames ARMSTRONG, DENTON, SPENCER & WESTER. What can any of you tell me about the book? What about the report that the characters of the book were based on the local folk? I have the book on order via interlibrary loan and I will greatly appreciate any background info you can provide while I'm waiting for them to find the book. Thanks very much. DW in MN

    1. Snakes - Vipers
    2. Betty Sellers
    3. September 1886 The Madisonville Times reports a most thrilling episode. A young lady here, Miss Mollie Bacon, had a terrible experience last Sunday. She had been visiting at her grand fathers, in the country, and the parlor of her fathers house had been unused for several days. She returned Saturday and Sunday she went into the parlor, laid down and fell asleep. She was aroused be a sense of suffocation and felt something on her neck and face. She sprang to her feet, when to her horrors she discovered that she had been disturbed by a venomous snake, a spreading viper. Miss Bacons mother tried to sweep it out. It did not seem to be vicious, only crawled around the pillow, as though seeking for warmth. It was finally killed. Another citizen in that part of town found one of these same reptiles in his house a few days ago. Betty Sellers

    3. Noticed the TAPP name in parts of your message to the list. I was not looking for the TAPP name untill I got a message the other day on my line of KESTNER'S and the TAPP name was mentioned. Thought I'd pass on the message for your records. It might help at some point and If you ever see any ref. to the KESTNER name would appreciate if you would let me know. Best of Luck Ken Ken When my dad, Kestner Lee Puryear was born, this Mr. Kestner gave dad a silver drinking cup. Dad's parents must have thought Mr. Kestner was a fine person to name their first child after him. There was a Tapp family near Tilden, Webster Co KY that had a general store and they also named a son after Mr. Kestner, ie. Kestner Tapp. I have no details about this Mr. Kestner other than he sold general merchandise in the Union/Webster county area during the early 1900's. It could possibly be that this Mr. Kestner is part of your family. I will try to find out more about Mr. Kestner when I get the chance to talk to dad's sister, she may remember something more. The family would tease my dad and tell him he was named after a traveling salesman !!
