    3. I've got a Sara Catherine Gibson, born in KY, who married Josiah (Joseph) Bradley in abt 1863 in Webster Co. I don't know anything about her family, but in trying to locate her, I did come across the following Gibson family in the 1860 Webster Co. census: Gibson, Issac (age 54) Rachal D. (age 35) Susan (age 22) Martha (age 18) Sally A. (age 14) Isaac (age 11) George (age 9) Rachal D. (age 6) Lucy J. (age 4) Joel (age 2) Burgus (age 2/12) All children are listed as born in KY. I thought since it has a George Gibson it might be of interest. If anyone has info on my Sara Catherine, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks, Jennie Harold Gibson wrote: > [ I could not mail to Maria because the e-mail address was > incomplete. Please forward] Maria, I don't have any information on > Juliette Thelma Gibson. 3. You may get this more than once, since I'm sending to 3 lists. I spoke with someone, can't even remember her name now. We were talking about a Juliett Thelma Gibson who married Thomas "Tommie" Lee Evans, she died in Union County, KY. I've talked to family and they don't remember her mother's name, but say that her father was George Herbert Gibson/Gipson and that she had one brother named Kenny or Kerney Gibson/Gipson. From what they remember, Juliett's mother died when Juliett was a very small child. Maria

    1. Re: Old wood floors, 1800s
    2. John Zerby@I-O INC 05/11/98 09:13 AM I think the traditional finish for wood floors from then until now has been wax, not varnish, just wax over stain. I don't understand the "no sheen" part, because wax definitely gives a sheen. Maybe there was wax previously on the floors you saw, but was just worn away. No doubt the kind of wood floors you find in old houses is a function of the time, place, and economic level of the home owner. I have seen plain, unfinished pine plank floors in old houses here in Texas. But I would bet that where folks could afford it, turn-of-the-century houses had oak floors, waxed and polished to a fair-thee-well. Varnish probably goes way back, but as a furniture finish, not for floors -- probably not tough enough for foot traffic. Wood floors I grew up with in the 1940s and '50s were finished with shellac. Polyurethane, which I guess is sometimes referred to as varnish, is a later development, very tough and pretty commonplace today. It would definitely not be authentic, though, in a restored Victorian. John Zerby, Houston, Texas Union County family names PIKE, MILLS, VIZE, LUCKETT, MELBOURNE

    3. Hello, Besides being interested in genealogy, I am also an old house buff. There has been a question I have wondered about for some time and never found an answer to. And I know someone out there has the answer. Today, when people install harwood floors, the floors are varnished and have a lovely sheen to them. When you look at the wooden floors of homes in the 1800's, there is no varnish or sheen on them. They are just plain wooden planks. Why is that? And when did the custom of varnishing the floors come into being? Was it in the 1880's with the Victorians? Thanks for any help. Helen Keusch

    2. KKBritt
    3. Does anyone have information on the Hape family living in the Henderson County areas? I am just starting this side of the family and found some Hapes in the 1920 Census reports. My line of Hape's eventually moved to Vandeburgh Co, Indiana and are still residing there. They married into the Bentle and Brummett families, also names I am researching. I only have information on my Granddaddy, Maurice Andrew Hape born in the 1920's, nothing before him. Kristy

    3. Maria Troutman wrote and told me she figured it was Bordley Cemetery in Union County and I think it probably is. Thanks for the detailed data on the location; I always like to have that if it's available. >I think I have burial lists for both those cemeteries. Who are you >looking for? This lady was Vivian Horn, dau of Lacy Horn and Della Holt. She married Floyd Crook/Crooks. She was born 25 Jun 1909; died 15 Oct 1932. The Crook family is a collateral to my Marks line and there are a blue-million of them. The Crook farm in Henderson County, Brandywine Farm, was one of a very few KY Bicentennial farms in the state - had to be in the same family for 200 years. I have a web page about it at: http://www.usroots.com/~cpalmer/marks/brandyw.htm Carole Palmer

    3. Carole, I suspect there is a slight spelling error in the record and it is Bordley Cemetery in Union Co. (but very near to Webster Co.) Given the 1932 burial date I suspect it is the "New" Bordley cemetery which is 1.35 miles northeast of Pride KY (Union Co.) on the northwest side of the highway 141. The "Old Bordley" Cemetery referred to as the "Pride - Carter" Cemetery is a little closer to Bordley and is 1.2 miles east of Pride along SR 758. I believe all burials were in the 1800's I think I have burial lists for both those cemeteries. Who are you looking for? 3. Does anybody know where Henderson Co juveniles, troubled youths, were kept in the early 1900s? I want to locate my grandpa's older brother, William Albert PHELPS. He is not listed with family members in the 1920 Henderson Co census. Family lore says he was sent away to a detention center for troubled youth. I would like to verify this. Thanks for any help. 3. i have two questions: (1) i have received some information from my very elderly g-g-aunt and it says that several family members are buried in zion ky in the family plot. to be honest, i really don't know what a "family plot" would be. is it on family land or elsewhere, or . . .? (2) the information also says that family land was donated and participation given in the formation of the Zion Baptist Church in Zion KY. I was wondering if this church was still in existence. Any help and/or advise on how to find the answers to these questions would be very much appreciated. thank you very much. P.S.
