    3. Congratulations, Betty!! I can't think of anyone who deserves it more. I knew you were busy, but had no idea of the extent of your involvment. When do you have time to sleep and eat??! And you still find time to help newbies like me. I can't thank you enough. And I want to express my hope that your husband's surgery is soon and goes very well. My prayers are with you both. 3. I've always been told to not use shaving cream because of chemicals in it and the effect it will have on the stone in years to come. What was always suggested to me, but I have yet to try, is to powder it with plain ole flour, I guess you would have to dust it off around the letters ?? What about chalk, is it harmful to OLD tombstones? You could get sidewalk chalk (bigger) and rub it across where the letters are suppose to be at. -----Original Message----- From: Terry Lanham <tlanham@kih.net> To: KYHENDER-L@rootsweb.com <KYHENDER-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Thursday, July 30, 1998 4:20 PM Subject: Tombstone rubbing >Hi >I wanted to respond to tombstone rubbings. > >I found a headstone of an ancestor buried in 1800, it was so bad that you could't read any letters on it. > >I took some shave cream and sprayed it across the top, then with a window squeegee I spreaded the cream across >the face of the headstone. > >Every letter was filled in with the cream and I was able to take the most wonderful pictures. > >The great thing about this is, the shave cream is just soap, it won't harm the head stone. > >Try it, you will be amazed at what great pictures you get. >Terry Lanham-Beatty

    1. Re: Tombstone rubbing
    2. Re shaving cream.....THE SHAVING CREAM HAS ACID IN IT, and it is not a good idea. Esp. is you don't have provision to wash it off after. Yes, you do get good pictures from it, but since the stone is already deteriorating, it will just help it along at a greater pace. I guess it is up to you.....It will be gone for future generations if shaving cream is used...... Not trying to be an alarmist. I have a Masters Degree in Historic Preservation, and this is what we learned in school.....Some folks use flour, sort of dusting it on, then washing it off after.....This is not always an easy answer. 3. Hi I wanted to respond to tombstone rubbings. I found a headstone of an ancestor buried in 1800, it was so bad that you could't read any letters on it. I took some shave cream and sprayed it across the top, then with a window squeegee I spreaded the cream across the face of the headstone. Every letter was filled in with the cream and I was able to take the most wonderful pictures. The great thing about this is, the shave cream is just soap, it won't harm the head stone. Try it, you will be amazed at what great pictures you get. Terry Lanham-Beatty

    2. Betty, Both congratulations and prayers are coming to you from Mary Wallace, an Ohioan with Kentucky roots --(Voss, Leibenguth). As a septugenarian who took up both the internet and genealogy as an "old dog trying to learn new tricks", I doubly appreciate your efforts and those of other net volunteers. To me, finding these old records online is a true miracle and helps offset the infirmities imposed by old age. Bless you and may God keep you and your husband safe in the weeks ahead.

    1. Betty wins KGS award!
    2. Carole Palmer
    3. Dear Henderson County Researchers... I am so proud to announce to you that the owner of the Henderson County list, Betty Sellers of Mt. Vernon IN, has won the Kentucky Genealogical Society's Regional Award for outstanding achievement in genealogy. Betty has been involved in the KYGenWeb Project since the March 1996 beginning and she became active in the USGenWeb Project shortly after that. Betty has been county coordinator for numerous KYGenWeb counties and is currently cc for Christian and Trigg Counties in Kentucky and is part of a three-person team who cc's the Vanderburgh County, Indiana INGenWeb page. She is also a former Indiana state-coordinator. Betty Sellers has personally transcribed many county census records and has them online. She has published quite a few books, including funeral home records and obituaries, along with many newspaper abstracts. Additionally she maintains the GenConnect board "Sellers' Western Kentucky Obituaries", which at last count had almost 2400 obituaries online. http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ky/SellersObits Betty also transcribed "The Elijah Stevens Family History of Kentucky" for Ray Stevens of Mississippi who is 91 years of age and she is now at work compiling a Davis history. The Stevens book is in print and available from Don Simmons. She also owns several genealogy mailing lists, including the ones for Henderson County KY and the Land-Between-the Lakes. She is probably involved in other things that I am unaware of but I know she is one busy lady! Betty Sellers is also a candidate for cc representative in the southeast-midatlantic region. She has been a wonderful source of help to all of us involved in the KYGenWeb and INGenWeb Projects and she is richly deserving of this award. The award will be presented this weekend at the KGS Annual Meeting in Frankfort. Betty will briefly leave the side of her husband of over 40 years to receive the award. Bill Sellers is awaiting a heart transplant in Indianapolis. Hooray for you, Betty!! We love you, girl! Carole Palmer Webster County KYGenWeb page coordinator http://www.rootsweb.com/~kywebste/ I have posted this to several appropriate lists. I apologize if you received more than one copy of it.

    1. JOHN DORRIS-Henderson Co., KY
    2. Linda Gudgel Finnell
    3. I saw a post come across the list this a.m. concerning an estate bill or some type of document with the names Dr. John DORRIS and an ALVES. I have ties to Henderson Co. and am having problems making a connection. John DORRIS married Elizabeth GUDGEL Dec. 3, 1844 in Henderson Co., KY. I think Elizabeth GUDGEL(L) DORRIS was surely related to my GUDGEL line (Joel or Daniel) of Henderson. John DORRIS and Elizabeth appear in the 1850 Census in Henderson with 3 daughters and a boy named Daniel GUDGELL, age 14. I feel this must be her nephew. John DORRIS is listed as a farmer, aged 42, and being born in TN. (making him b. abt. 1808). Can anyone shed any light on this DORRIS/GUDGELL connection. Other surnames related to this family are BIGGS, BROWN, BARRON, LOVE, HINDMAN and VAUGHT. Many thanks! Linda GUDGEL FINNELL Woodford Co., KY
