Hi Betty and Merry Christmas! I certainly enjoy the old articles you keep finding--I keep hoping one will be about my family ties. We seem to forget how simple life was 100 yrs ago in many respects compared to our lives. The people didn't travel as far as we--if they honeymooned at all, they would take a train for the next larger town and return the next day. Also, we forget that it was a very class-conscious society then. You were brought up knowing your class and that's were you usually stayed. I still remember my dad (b. in 1909) talking about the people on his mail route who had class--money, education. He felt he was not their equal. The movie, Titanic, was very discriptive in the class system of that era. I think it is humorous to read how the editors descibe the brides and grooms--"she is a charming young lady with much grace, culture, and wit and will be an asset to her husband's many business ties." It is sort of like they are describing the pedigree of a fine racehorse. Young people today would die if they were described in such a fashion. Wonder how the next century will view us? Keep the "bits and pieces" coming. And Happy Holidays. Helen Keusch (Eakins, Handley, Ezell, Sandifer, Melton, Foard[Ford], Crabtree, Land, Goodwin, Goodart, Bennett, Edwards, and Zuber)
Hello everyone- Merry Christmas!.... This afternoon I've been scanning some old microfilm briefly of happenings 98 years ago at Christmas time. Would you like to share some old clippings and happenings of Christmas years ago in our county?... Indiana is nice and cold today - and I'd love to be sitting in the Bethesday Community of Trigg, in front of the log fire with my grandparents. One particular Christmas season, a long time ago, Santa was getting ready for his annual trip. But there were problems. Four of his elves were sick, and the trainee elves just weren't working out. Things got worse when Mrs. Claus told him her mother was coming to visit. Then, when he went to harness the reindeer, he found that three of them were about to give birth. Two others had jumped the fence and were out carousing, heaven knows where. When he went to load the sleigh, one of the side boards cracked and the toy bag fell to the ground, scattering the toys. Frustrated, Santa went into the house for a cup of coffee and a shot of whiskey, but when he opened the cupboard, he discovered the elves had apparently had a party, and there was nothing left to drink. Just as he accidentally dropped the coffee pot, breaking it in hundreds of little pieces, the doorbell rang. Santa opened the door, cursing beneath his breath, and there stood a beautiful little angel with an enormous, perfectly shaped Traditional Christmas tree. "Merry Christmas Santa," the angel said. "Isn't it just a lovely day to be alive? Look! I have a beautiful tree for you. Where would you like me to stick it?" Thus began the tradition of the little angel on top of the Christmas tree. Dear Dot, My mother's family was from Henderson. The Shofner Family. Doc, Nannye, dau. Louise Shofner (she worked for Mr. Deep an attorney), dau. Margaret Shofner (she worked as the secretary to the President of OVNB), son William Shofner (he worked in the Dept. of Agriculture in Washington) and my mother Ann Shofner. I have other family and areas of interest I am researching, but I felt if I help you, perhaps you could help me sometime. I looked up the name Della Railey in the SSDI (social security death index) and found that she was born Jun 10, 1891 and died Aug 1985. This is public information at the following website: http://ancestry.com/ Then click on SSDI under FREE SEARCHES and then type in the name. You can also get a copy of their SS record for $7 if you want. Hope this helps you, Happy Holidays Bill Attwood Tucson, Arizona PS- I miss visiting Henderson, last there in 1981. My Aunt Margaret died in 1993, so we have no direct Shofner relatives there. I received a telephone call yesterday from a gentleman in England who is researching a well-known jazz/blues singer from the vaudeville era named Marion Harris. According to information he's collected, he said she claimed to have been born in Henderson, Kentucky, as Mary Ellen Harrison. He thinks it was around 1896 (she said it was slightly later!) and claimed to be a descendant of U.S. President Benjamin Harrison. He is trying to determine if this might be an embellishment and if indeed she was born in Henderson. Does anyone have any knowledge about her that I could relay to him? Thanks much, Donna B. Hello, I have a copy of a land transfer deed to Enoch George Eakins that was done after the death of his father, George Eakins. Enoch George is my g grandfather. I am posting this because I know there are other descendants of George who are working upon these lines. The living children of George and their spouses signed this document. George died in Nov, 1850, Enoch George and Zacharias were not married when this was done. A daughter, Sarilda, had already died in 1821. Hope this will help someone out there.
