Lisa: As promised earlier although a week late, I finally made it to the National Archives and checked out info on your James M. Hensley born in Hart County 12/7/1911 and raised by Freida Young. Started with 1920 census and tried to work backwards utilizing the soundex records. Could not find a Freida Young at any point in time or location including Indiana 1920. However, did find the following: Jefferson County, Louisville, ED #190, Sheet 8 B, WILLIAM T. HENSLEY, renter, male, white, age 32, widower, can read and write, born in Kentucky, father born in Tennessee, mother born in Tennessee, occupation switch ?, railway 8?. With him are THELMA _ HENSLEY, daughter, female, white, age 10 years, single, attends school, can read and write, born in Kentucky, father and mother born in Kentucky; JAMES M. HENSLEY, son, male, white, 8 years old, single, attends school, can read and write, born in Kentucky, father and mother born in Kentucky; LOU HENSLEY, mother, female, age 68, widow, cannot read or write, born in Tennessee, father and mother born in Tennessee. Although not in Hart County, this seems to fit your husband family. To verify, I took it a step back to 1910 which showed the following: Hart County, Mag. District #1, ED #63, sheet 190, LOULIE HENSELEY (copy is poor but soundex shows HensEley), female, white, age 56, widow, born in Tennessee, father and mother born in Tennessee, housekeeper; WILLIE T. HENSELEY, son, male, white, age 22, married, married 1 year, born in Kentucky, father and mother born in Tennessee, laborer; MYRTLE HENSELEY, daughter-in-law, female, white age 21, married, married 1 year, mother of 1 child, 1 child now living, born in Kentucky, father and mother born in Kentucky; THELMA HENSELEY, granddaughter (Gr D), female, white, age 0 (zero), single, born in Kentucky, father and mother born in Kentucky. Since this seemed to fit and it was in Hart County, the next step back was 1900 which came up with the following: Hart County, Voting Precinct No. 1, Mag. District No. 1, ED# 54, sheet 7, R. H. HENSLEY, white, male, born in March 1844, age 56, married, married 20 years, born in Tennessee, father and mother born in Virginia, farmer, cannot read or write, owns farm free; MRS. SAMANTHA L. HENSLEY, wife, female, born in December 1856, age 43, married, married 20 years, mother of 1 child, 1 child now living, born in Tennessee, father and mother born in Tennessee, cannot read or write; WILLIAM T. HENSLEY, son white, male, born in November 1889, age 12, single, born in Kentucky, father and mother born in Tennessee, has attended school for 5 months, can read and write. Other than the wife's name not totally correct, this again seems to fit the pattern. Next tried to take it to 1880 Soundex but could not find, perhaps because their child was not yet born and a family must have a child 10 yrs or younger to be listed in the Soundex. Then too they could have been in Tennessee in 1880 and perhaps they were not yet together. Perhaps their marriage could be found in either Kentucky or Tennessee in 1879 or 1880. If you would like the copies that I made, let me know your snail-mail address at WUTT@aol.com and I'll be happy to send them to you. Hope this helps and good luck. Regards, Carolyn Hall Rowles P.S. Would appreciate information from anyone on a HUGH HALL, a Union Civil War veteran in Hart County 1860s to 1890s, married to Nancy Jane DUKE, with children Sarah F., John W., Henry F., Charles E., Mandory, Lugenia A. or Eugenia A., Margaret, second wife Matilda who was possibly Matilda MIDDLETON.
