Perusing various 1850 Census' I found children of different names listed with families of my line; also I found Swinford children enumerated with other families EVEN though there was a Swinford family nearby as was indicated by the close by listing of the family. What was the status of these children? Were they in some sort of indenturement? -- Charles Biro Swinford 16837 Cashell Rd. Olney, Md. 20832-2046 301-774-6001 <swinford@erols.com>

Source: "Scott County Church Histories: A Collection" A publication of the Scott Co. Bicentennial Committee, 1979 - avail at/from the Scott County Museum for about $8.00 (listed on one of our pages for Scott Co.) Check out the museum page for more information: http://www.netcom.com/~jog1/museum.html I definitely recommend this book./Jo Thiessen p. 25 "Silas Baptist Church, situated near the corner of Scott, Bourbon and Harrison Counties in Bourbon County, has interesting ties with Scott County religious history. After leaving his pastorate at the Stamping Ground Baptist Church, Georgetown's founder, the Rev. Elijah Craig, assumed duties at Silas Church, serving as pastor there from 1803 to 1806. "The church was organized in August 1800 with twenty members. It has held services at the same location longer than any other church in Bourbon County. Many of the members came from the families of the historic Traveling Church of Spotsylvania County, Virginia, who traveled by foot to Kentucky in the winter of 1781. "Silas Church has roots in the Coopers Run Church, which had its roots in the Bryan Station Baptist Church. Five members of the Coopers Run Church were killed by Indians in 1787, that church's first year. "On August 30, 1800, twenty members of Coopers Run Church withdrew and with the assisance of the Rev. George Eve, Rev. August Eastin, and the Rev. Ambrose Dudley, all members of the Traveling Church, organized the Silas Church. A deed for grounds was made in 1799 by Charles Smith. The first building was constructed of logs, and had a balcony for slaves. "A 'division of the organization' took place in 1830, the year marking the separation of the Alexander Campbell movement from the Baptist associations. The present church house, a Greek Revival building, was erected in 1850 for $3,000." There is a list of pastors, which may not include all of them, but extends from Davis Biggs, 1812-1820 thru Walter P. Baucom, 1973. Jo

ROLL CALL: STANDIFORD, CLARK, HILDRETH, DAYTON, MCDOWELL, BURKS, HOOTON, SHOALS, SWARTS, KILE, LOUDERBACK, WIGGINS COUNTIES: BOURBON, MASON, NICHOLAS, FLEMING, HARRISON, ROBERTSON Hello, I'm Marla in Venice, CA, alias: littoral@msn.com. My great-grandfather and his brother may have moved their DAYTON families west in 1906, but my beloved great aunts, uncles and grandmother remained 100-proof Kentuckians all their lives. I am tracing all ancestral lines back from where they merged in and about the Town of Mt. Olivet, Robertson Co. AQUILLA STANDIFORD (1741-1799) and his wife SARAH CLARK (1744-est. 1815) of MD, settled on Main Licking River, nr. Blue Licks Springs on land still in the family name. Early county boundary adjustments put them in Mason-Nicholas-Fleming-Nicholas Co. In 1794, their daughter, SARAH (1773-c.1835) married. SQUIRE HILDRETH (1770-1794) of Wythe Co., VA. They married in Bourbon Co. but settled across the Abner's Road from Standiford in (now) Nicholas Co. Dau. REBECCA (1798-1846) m. WILLIAM GARRETT DAYTON (1794-1863), son of . GARRETT DAYTON (c.1765-1830) and his wife MARY ANN (?) (c.1765-1840) are the great enigma in my research. They were in Mason Co. by 1794. Family tradition says they came from MD, but proof of their origins has eluded all researchers. From 1818-1830, the family lived concurrently in Nicholas Co. and Paris, Bourbon Co. Garrett was a stonemason, and the "brick wall" he built around his own history has become the gathering place where distant cousins meet. JOHN MCDOWELL (?-1816) came from PA and settled in Bracken Co. in 1799 on a commission as Justice of the Peace from Gov. James Garrard. John's wife was NANCY (BURKS[?] no dates). Their son, THOMAS MCDOWELL (1795-1873) married. 1) ISABELLA HOOTON (est.1795-1846), m. 2) LOUMILLA (USSELMAN) SHOALS. JAMES (JACOBUS) SWARTS (1758-1813) of Loudoun Co., VA, served in Lee's Dragoons in Rev. War and Battle of Blue Licks. He m. 1) JANE ROGERS and 2) (Mrs.) MARGARET THOMAS (1775-1867) and settled on bounty land in Mason Co., now Nicholas Co. A descendant [lineage not yet proved] JACOB SWARTS (c.1809-1854) m. ELIZABETH KILE (c.1809-1841) in Mason Co. Their son, JAMES M. SWARTS (1835-1902) married in Nicholas Co.. MARGARET LAUDERBACK (1829-1888), dau. of ISAAC LOUDERBACK (1796-1863) and his wife ELIZABETH WIGGINS (1803-1891). Earliest Louderback and Wiggins families were in Harrison Co.

(2) THOMAS KEARNS, December 27 , 1854, HARRISON COUNTY; b. December 08, 1802, HARRISON COUNTY; d. August 14, 1886, HARRISON COUNTY. Notes for ELIZA JANE FOOKES: I AM HAVING A GREAT DEAL OF TROUBLE SOLVING THIS FAMILY RELATIONSHIP. IRENE WAS LISTED IN THE 1850 BOURBON CO. CENSUS WITHOUT AN ADULT MALE IN THE HOUSEHOLD. HER MOTHER'S MAIDEN NAME APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN FOOKES, THE DAUGHTER OF BENJAMIN AND HANNAH FOOKES. IT IS UNKNOWN WHETHER SHE WAS MARRIED TO ANOTHER FOOKES OR WAS UNMARRIED WHEN IRENE WAS BORN. THERE IS ALSO THE POSSIBILITY THAT IRENE WAS AN ORPHAN BEING RAISED BY RELATIVES. ELIZA JANE MARRIED THOMAS KEARNS IN 1854; HE WAS 51, SHE WAS 32 ON THE MINISTER'S STATEMENT, HE DESCRIBED THOMAS AS BEING 50 YEARS OLD AND A WIDOWER. HE THEN DESCRIBED ELIZA AS BEING 33 YEARS OLD AND SINGLE. IT IS MY OPINION THAT ELIZA WAS NOT MARRIED AT THE TIME IRENE WAS BORN, IN LATER YEARS THERE WAS A GREAT DEAL OF OBJECTION WHEN PEARL HARNEY WANTED TO MARRY MONROE WITHERS, THE SON OF IRENE FOOKES WITHERS, AND THE GRANDSON OF ELIZA JANE FOOKES KEARNS. IN THOSE DAYS AN ILLEGITIMATE BIRTH WAS CONSIDERED AN EXTREMELY SHAMELESS ACT WHICH THE ENTIRE FAMILY MUST BEAR HER OBITUARY SAYS IRENE HAD TWO HALF BROTHERS FRANK AND MONROE AND A HALF SISTER BELLE, INDICATING THAT SHE WAS INDEED THE DAUGHTER OF ELIZA JANE. Notes for THOMAS KEARNS: THOMAS KEARNS WAS BORN ON THE PARENTAL HOMESTEAD, ON TWO LICK PIKE, HARRISON COUNTY, IN 1802, AND HERE GREW TO MANHOOD. WHEN READY TO ESTABLISH A HOME OF HIS OWN HE MOVED TO CURRY'S RUN, AND HAVING PURCHASED A TRACT OF HEAVILY TIMBERED LAND FOR THE SMALL SUM OF ONE DOLLAR AND TWENTY-FIVE CENTS AN ACRE HE CLEARED AND IMPROVED A FARM, ON WHICH HE LIVED AND LABORED UNTIL HIS DEATH IN 1886. HE WAS AFFILIATED WITH THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY IN POLITICS, AND WAS A MEMBER OF THE METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH, TO WHICH HIS THREE WIVES ALSO BELONGED.. Kay Withers

Bill, There were 1700's COVEYs in the Caroline Co,MD/Kent Co, DE area who were Nicolites (religious sect much like the Quakers only stricter.) Some of the people who lived in that area migrated (by 1800) to the Harrison Co, KY. area. However, I have no documentation on any COVEY families that did (although they may well have.) A branch of our family came ... Isaac and Jesse PAVEY, probably the SAFFORD/STAFFORDS and ADAMS families as well. Do you have any given names and/or dates? My COVEY vitals are in the 1700's, sorry I can't help you with anyone later . You may be surprised at how many COVEYs there actually are out there? Hope this helps. To one and all, The checks have slowed to a trickle. As of today, twenty two orders remain unpaid and two orders have been placed on hold. Please contact me if you are having difficulties sending the money. I need an accurate accounting of the orders and money received to be on a sure footing with our project. HI!! I am looking for information on ALLEN PEARSON born in KY. abt 1804. His wife SARAH (CASE?) born in KY. abt 1809 and their daughter MARY PEARSON born in KY in 1827. Were they born in HARRIS CO. KY.? JOHN SR. PEARSON and his wife CELIA ALLEN may have been allen's parents or grandparent. Any one with information on this line or doing genealogy on this family would be great!!!!
