Christian Frayly (Freiley) was definitely the father (solid sources) of my John Freiley and in 1810 John was 14 years old and living at home in Barren County. The four Fraleys you listed are not related as far as I know. I have found that I have to be very careful with the spelling variants. It appears that Fraley is more of an English/Irish extraction whereas Freiley is more Germanic. By the way, Christian died in Nov 1810 after the census was taken. All of John's siblings got married in Barren County and most are on the 1820 census of that county, but John was married in 1816 - 1817 and left the county. An old family oral history states that he was married in Boonesboro then lived in Middlesboro. His first born, Samuel Eugene was born in 1818 in Kentucky (confirmed by later census) and I am assuming in what became Harlan County in 1819 but have no proof. His second born, Elizabeth H. was born in 1820 in Tennessee (confirmed by later census). Therefore he was somewhere in Harlan county or the area that later became Bell for only a couple of years before Elizabeth was born in Tennessee. Or, the oral history is just wrong (as many are) and he and his young family were somewhere else in Kentucky. I know from later sources that he never returned to Kentucky but lived in the 1850 - 1870 period in Bledsoe, Hamilton, and Rhea counties, TN. Therefore, he was too young in 1810 to show up on the 1810 census and in 1820 was already in Tennessee where Elizabeth was born. I can't find him in 1820 anywhere in Tennessee. I thought my only chance of finding him in this 1816 - 1819 period was through tax lists or deeds. You may be asking yourself why go to all this trouble to find out where an ancestor was during a 3 year period. I am writing a research paper on this family and am really trying to nail down every detail I can. Thanks for your notes on the county and city formations, that was very helpful. If you come upon any other small details please send them along. Regards Paul Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
