Every mine in Harlan, County had this type of defense against the miners. Ammunition on hand at the following mines by coal operators. 1. Wisconsin Steel Company--Benham, Ky--1937 Fourteen--45 automatics, Two Colt Revolvers, Two- 38-S & W Revolvers; Two-38 Revolvers with 6" inch Barrel, S & W; Five,12 Gauge Winchester Shot Guns; Six, 32 Winchester Special High Powered Rifles; Five, 38 X 40 Marlin Rifles; Seven, 32 X 20 Winchester Rifles; Four and a half boxes of 45 Colt Revolver Cartridges, sixteen boxes of 45 Automatic cartridges, four and a half boxes of 38-44 S & W Special Revolver Cartridges, one and a half boxes 44 S & W Special Revolver Cartridges; Seven and half boxes 38 Winchester Rifle Cartridges; eight boxes of 12 Gauge Shot Gun Shell Cartridges; Thirty two boxes of 32 Special high Powered Rifle Cartridges. 3.
