    3. I am primarily interested in information pertaining to the black residents of Harlan with the surnames of CREECH, LEDFORD or LEWIS. Henry R. CREECH, my grandfather died in 1939. He was a blacksmith. My grandmother Eliza Jane LEWIS died in 1973. They lived on Cumberland Avenue, the part that is now outside the floodwall. My great-grandfather was George W. CREECH, the son of John and Sarah CREECH former slaves of Old John Creech in Cranks Creek. Henry's mother was America LEDFORD, daughter of Sinclair and Dorcas LEDFORD, former slaves of Aley LEDFORD. There are numerous reference to this family in the book "Generations" by John Egerton. Eliza Jane Lewis is the daughter of Will LEWIS who died in 1917 on Cranks Creek. While Will LEWIS (the son of Charity LEWIS) was married to Rebecca J. LEDFORD (another daughter of Sinclair and Dorcas LEDFORD), I have determined that Eliza is the daughter of Martha LEDFORD. Martha is the daughter of Mary (Polly) FARLEY and James LEDFORD (son of Aley). The connection I found was Martha's brother John who was a frequent visitor of Eliza. She, and we, always called him Uncle John. Since I know many of the descendants, I am also interested in the other black families of early Harlan and Cranks Creek -- the TURNER's, HOWARD's, WARD's, POPE's and OLINGER's. JerryBrown
