My grandfather was a grand son of devil Jim. His father was Calvin Turner on of Devil Jim son. The story that I heard was after Jim return home from the war he found that his brother farm had been took over by the Rebel army and burn down. And that when Jim and a few friends join together and became raider. It wasn't until they release a bunch of Rebel soldiers from war crimes that lead Jim and them to burn down the court house. The Civil War was a very dark time in America History Brother fighting brother or cousin fighting cousin. Which also lead to the bad blood with the Middleson. The fact that they surpported the Rebel army is what lead Jim to kill his cousin. I can not say i agree with all that jim did but I do understand why he did some of the things he did. "Dock" BALL, abt 1834-1860, and Anne BAILEY, b. abt 1833. James F. "Dock" BALL was the son of Moses BALL, Jr., 1797-1885, and Eleanor RICHARDSON, b. abt. 1806. Anne BAILEY was the daughter of William R. BAILEY, abt. 1800-1871, and Mattie FORRESTER, b. abt. 1801. Emily C. POPE was the daughter of Solomon POPE, 1812-1883, and Susan Elizabeth BALL, 1815-1906. Susan Elizabeth BALL was the daughter of James Samuel BALL, 1791-1867, and Susannah POSEY, 1795-1859. James Samuel and Susannah (Posey) BALL are my 4th great grandparents. William Martin BALL and Emily SKIDMORE are an interesting story. First, their marriage appears to have been of the "shotgun" variety, as they were married 28 Dec 1873 in Harlan County, and Margaret Eliza BALL was born 18 Apr 1874. Second, the family story is that William Martin BALL allegedly killed a man in Harlan County and fled (to TX) leaving his wife and daughters. The second child may not have been born or may have been a newborn at the time of the alleged murder. I have no specific information about that. I have copies of some of the divorce information; however, the date of the divorce is not on the copies of what I have. There is a story behind that, too, but I respect the privacy of his grandson and will not relate it in a public forum. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
