As I see it, they appeared as follows on the 1920 census: Dwelling 44-44 GUTHRIE, Newton, 39, head, b. AL . .Bertha, 25, wife, b. AL; father b. PA; mother b. AL . .May, 17, dau, b. AL . .Beulah, 15, dau, b. AL . .Willie, 12, son, b. AL . .Gertie, dau, 10, b. AL ----------------------------- above would have been born to Alice A.. Then at some point Alice died between the birth of Gertie abt. 1908 and the birth of Louis, age 6 in 1914. . . Louis, 6, son, b. AL . .Melvin, 4 yrs 9 months, b. AL . .Margaret, dau, 3 yrs 4 months, b. AL . .Julius, 1 yr, 4 months, b. AL NOTE: Of course, Alice could have been the mother to some of these later children. Difficult to really know . I would suggest you contact Walker County, AL court records for a marriage for him and Bertha. He probably also married this Alice A. in Walker Co., AL also. I would say odds are with all those births, she probably died from some sort of complications which was so common then. Just in looking at the birth pattern, odds are that Louis was the first child of Bertha. All the other births are between 1-2 years apart and there is a almost 4 year spread between Gertie and Louis. You might also check with any local Walker Co. Genealogical Society for records of deaths around 1911-1912 for this Alice A. Or, for any records of cemetery listings for Alice A. GUTHRIE. Good luck to you in your search. On Ancestry.com there is the VERY FAINTEST record for the WWI Draft Registration for Marcus Newton GUTHRIE. There it gives his birth as: 5-22-1880 and he lived at Carbon Hill, Walker Co., AL. It gives his eyes as : blue; hair as: light; medium built. Signed in 1918. I cannot read the name of his next of kin but it does appear to be Bertha GUTHRIE. I'm sorry to say it is just so very, very light that many parts of the registration are just not readable. I already have Newt's death cert. That's where I got the name of the cemetery-Kenvir #3. I'm trying to find a cemetery listing or photo, but I don't know the current name of the cemetery. I am also trying to find out where and when his first wife, Alice (Lazenby) died. (Bertha is his 2nd wife) Newt lived in AL with Alice in 1910 and then Bertha in 1920 before he and Bertha moved to KY and were in the 1930 census. So Alice probably died in AL, but I just thought I'd check Newt's cemetery for her in case she and their children moved there too. I don't know if she died or they divorced. Alice was white, and their children were: Gertrude, Myrtle, Buelah and William. Newt and Bertha's children were: George, Mary, Julius, Clyde and James M. This James died in 1977 though, not by 1959 as in your index. Just read your 2nd message also: Yes that's him and Alice in the AL census. There is some question whether he was born in 1876 or 1886. James A. works in the coal mines and is also from AL; with parents b.
