Last evening on The History Channel there was a story about The Clay County War, involved in that war was a John & James Howard from Harlan County, as I have several John & James Howards in my wife's family from Harlan would like to know exactly which one's were involved. This War took place sometime around The Civil War. Also involved in this War were, The White's, Baker's & Garrard's, supposedly started over Salt Mining rights. Any help would be greatly appreciated, of course The Howard's that I have, may not have been involved at all. Walter

Susan Holmes (born Dec. 26, 1834, Wythe County, VA, died August 30, 1897, Perry County, KY) and Jonathan Witt are my g.g. grandparents. Susan (or Susanna) was the daughter of Robert Stanford Holmes (b. 1803 in Harlan Co. KY), and Nancy Olinger (b, Jan 11, 1806 in Russell Co. VA). Nancy Olinger was the daughter of John Christopher Olinger and Eve Margaret Siler. I recently found out that John Christopher Olinger served in the Revolutionary War (under the name of Christopher Olinger), and I am trying to find proof that Susan Holmes was the daughter of Robert and Nancy Olinger Holmes. I need this proof to fill out an application to the DAR. Susan was also married to Greenberry Pennington and was living in Perry County at the time of her death in 1897. I'm the great-grandson of George King, brother of Addie King Ledford, and son of Ewell King and Mary Skidmore. About the only information I found was in John Egerton's book "Generations." For a guy that was the sheriff of Harlan County for 4 years and a US marshal, there sure aren't many documents on him.
